Im calling out Smokin87TA aka Tim
Well I hate to see it come down to this but Im left with no choice as Tim refuses to respond to my PMs or calls to his cell.
Smokin87TA, aka Tim, sold me , what he said was, a Mallory billit small cap distributor ( Model MAA-8048204 ). I get the thing and it looks nothing like it. I screw around a while trying to find out what model it is. Finally i said screw it, I'll install it to see if it works which it didnt. The distributor causes my car to surge and it will not go to the commanded timing when the ECS wire is reconnected after setting the static. I called him before my last PM and he refused to refund the full price as he claims that I have broken it somehow.
This stems from me asking him if he knows which way the wires go to the modue as there is no keyed plug from the pick-up coil to the module.. He claims that i told him that I reversed them and screwed up his module, which I never did with his module and also noted which way they were when I tried my stock module in his distributor with the same results. I simply asked if he had any information so that i could verify that its connected properly as he was the last one to change the module.
I will add that this is a misconception (that reversing the magnetic leads will fry the module) as, after doing some research, I have done so with my stock module just to verify that the leads were not reversed and my module still works in my stock dist. but no results from this distributor. Basically, the pulse from this output is very small and the only thing that will happen is it will trigger off the wrong edge of the pulse and thus your timing will be wrong.
Anyway, in trying to find out who makes this distrbutor so I can get some support, as Tim has offered none, I sent out the attached pictures to Mallory, MSD and Racers Outlet and I have run into a dead end as they all state they dont make it nor have ever sold it.
So here is my call to Smokin87TA...Tim, you claim you have done nothing but given good deals and helped people out on this board? How about helping me with this issue or giving me my money back? Clearly you have left me high and dry. The only help you have given is to say that "i have a witness that saw it run in my car" yet you refuse to accept my findings that I have done nothing to dammage this distributor which are the following.
1.)I have a good pulse from the pick-up coil/reluctor ( offered to bring a scope to show you this)
2.) The pick-up coil measures good ( offered to bring my DVM to show you this)
3.) The Accel module works in my distributor. ( offered to let you see it run in my car)
In addition to my findings, I never accused him of selling me a defective part but rather suggested that it simply doesnt work for my application. My suggestions were the following.
1.) My stock distributor has shielding around the reluctor\pick-up coil and his does not which maybe causing some interference.
2.) Mallory claimed that the original module must be used or it will not function properly (Keep in mind, this may be moot now as I finally got a response back from Mallory claimining its not thiers)
Here are my emails and responses from all vendors I have tried to obtain help ( the vendors response is in bold )
Atten: Kevin....Would you please Help Me?
I have purchased a distributor from a kid that says he acquired it from you. When he sold me the distributor, he claimed it was a Mallory model#8048204 Its a small cap, remote coil, computer controlled advance, drop-in replacement for late model GM 1987-93 cars
The kid says he purchased it from you on 8-22-05. Anyway I cant get it to work on my vehicle and this kid has blown me off so Im stuck with trying to make it work or throwing it in the garbage. ( The module works in my distributor but not in the billit distributor he sold me. I have a good pulse from the reluctor\pick-up coil but it will not go to the computer commanded advance.)
I have been trying to get some assistance from Mallory, but they dont think this is one of thier distributors and it looks nothing like a Mallory model# 8048204. Nor an Accel, nor a MSD.
My question is..Do you recognize this distributor? If so, who is the maker and what is the model? I have attached some pictures to help.. Please disregard the Accel module as the kid said he replaced the original module with this Accel module.
Thanks in adavnce for your time.

Hi Alan, here is the message I sent to Rick. Maybe the easiest way to determine if it is a Mallory would be to look at the pick-up coil if you have one in stock?
Thanks again for your time.
Best regards,
Matt Ward

Subject: Is This A Mallory Distributor?
Hello Rick,
I talked to you earlier regarding questions I had on, what I think is, a Mallory distributor Part# 8048204.
Attached are the pictures but disregard the accel module as this was added by the original owner at some point.
Could you please verify that this is in fact a Mallory 8048204 so that i may be able to dertermine the part number for the pick-up coil and also what the value, in ohms, the pick-up coil should read.
Im assuming that the pick-up coil would read near the stock value which is between 700 ohm to 1k ohm.
I have measured the coil on this distributor and it reads 770 ohms.
The current problem I have is problems setting the static timing ( timing with the ESC connector unplugged ) it runs rough and surges. With the ESC connected, the commanded spark from the computer doesnt work.
If I replace the accel module with the module from my stock distributor it still does not work so i know its not a module issue as i have the stock module installed in the stock distributor, in my car now, running perfectly.
Any information you can give me regarding this distributor would be appreciated.
Best regards,
Matt
Response from MSD
Sir,
That does look like one of our distributors. The pick up should be reading between 400-1300 ohms. The main thing on resistance value is that it does not show a dead short or open when checking that value. The number for a new pick up is PN 84661. This will be available from one of the dealers listed on our web page.
Thank you,
MSD tech
