Anyone have a rear end narrowed?
I am thinking of narrowing a 92' Z28 10 bolt to fit in my 57' Chevy.. Has anyone had this done or know who I would look to for the service? I was going to call Currie and Moser, but think I could get it done cheaper elsewhere. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jason

That's something I would like to do. It shouldn't be to hard since the axle tubes are just tack welded to the housing. I would think you would need a big drill bit or some kind of tool to remove the weld then cut tubes to desired length, fully weld tubes to the housing the shorten the axle. I would recommend order after market axles from Moser that is shortened to your spec. rather than shipping your stock ones to them. You might save some money or maybe cheaper to get custom made.

Never really thought about doing it myself... That is a thought! I have more than enough in the tool dept. to do it. I could fab up a jig and just do it here at home (axles aside). I will look at it more tomorrow. If I pursue it myself, I'll make sure to take lots of pictures!

Narrowing a rear end is a pretty simple task if you have all of the correct stuff to do it. For startes you need a rear end narrowing jig. The common way it to cut off the housing ends where the wheel bearing is and order new ends. You do not want to cut the axle tube in the middle of the axle tube and weld it there. ou need to be sure to weld it slowly and not all at once. Otherwise the axle tube will, :Pull" and the rear end will be bent. You also have to weld it with the narrowing jig in place. The rear end should be no more then a 1/32" out total.
The rear end jig is a centerless ground bar with adapters that fit in the center section caps. Then you slide the bar through it and slide in the new housing ends. Once the ends are slide down the bar you take the outer adapters and slide them into the new housing ends. Now it is time to tack them in place and make sure the bars turns free.
Some companies do drill out the welds and change out the axle tubes. The main reason people do this is to go with a 4130 axle tube. Once the rosette weld have been drilled out the axle tubes have to be pressed out. Usually the axle tube will distort (bend) and the tube is junk. I have seen peoplecut the tube in the middle and lust take out a section to shorten up the rear end but that is eally the last place from a metalurgy place to have a weld.
