Car: 91 Formula 350/WS6
Engine: 350
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.23
Motor size

I purchased a 91 Formula and need some help figuring out what motor it has. The 8th VIN digit is an 8 which is an 350TPI and the option code is an L98 motor, The problem is that it is a TBI motor. If you go to Auto Zone or any of the parts stores they say it is an 350 MFI. The car is totally stock and a one owner with 92,xxx miles. The previous owner says that the motor has never been changed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Car: Only a daily driver, but comin home
Engine: I have one that runs ;)
Transmission: Caged hamster that runs really fast
Axle/Gears: They are round, I know that much
Does it have the B2L option code as well?? Seems kinda fishy with that,, I dont know if the option code nessecarily means anything with the induction, altho I could be wrong.....try checking the RPO codes in the back hatch area, it is either the backside of the storage door in the rear or spare tire cover that has the RPO codes, center console could of been replaced.

What do you mean by "option code?"

What does the emmisions tag on the underside of the power bulge hood say? Is that the option code that you mean?

Yes it does have a B2L option also. The vin number matches the option code list in the center console so im doubting that it has been changed. What is the B2L option? My option list doesnt give a description for it.

When i say opton code i mean the list that is usually in the center console or the spare tire cover. It has a list of numbers and letters that when decipherd tell you what the car came out with from the factory.

The hood has been replaced from another car due to a falling tree limb before i purchased the car so the emmisions tag says 305.

I have a few option codes that i dont know what they are.

A90
R6P
V73
1SC
191
199
41U
6ZW
7ZW
8NL
9NL

Does anyone know what these are?

I'm pretty sure if the VIN says it had an L98 then it had an L98, regardless of what people at autozone say. If it's got TBI on it now, maybe somebody pulled the motor or put a TBI system on it.

no L98 has tbi on it. If there's a tbi motor in there then it's a 305, the only option for a 350 engine was TPI. Check the block casting to be sure it'll be on the back near the distributor on the drivers side and be stamped 5.0 or 5.7L. They could have swapped in a different motor but it would be a downgrade for sure.

This car is srewd up! So The vin is an 8 which is a 350, correct? The option code is L98 which is a 350 also, correct? But the trans code is a 700R4 for a 305.

As far as the stamp this motor must not have one or i cant see it. There are some numbers that are too small to read from looking over the fender or climbing on the motor.

vin 8 is 350 TPI period.
Something was changed.

yes i know that 700R4 came out behind 305 and 350. But there is a three letter code on the right rear transmission pan lip that tells you what the transmission origanally came out behind!

FBM 192
FTM 305TBI
FZM 305MFI
FUM 350TPI

I think the guy might have pulled the motor.....

Maybe he blew the 350, found a 305 cheap and threw it in...you never know man...
You could always atre down the motor and find out..while your in there if it IS a 350 throw in a 4.00 crank
