Illinios Laws

i'm currently contemplatign a move to IL from WI, adn have soem questions about laws, any input is greatly appreciated. i just bought a car that i didnt' bother registerign yet because my plates have parking tickets against them, i do not have insurance(which is required in IL), and my plates will expire at the end of Oct- tomorrow.
i found out after movign i'd have 60 days to handle registration stuff, BUT can i get a title and plates for the car without havign insurance ahead of time? i currently have no drivers license for 7 more months, but still need a car for to and from work, when i have my license i'll be able to get insurance again. just need to know if you need proof of insurance in IL to get title and plates. thanks ahead of time.

no you don't have to have insurance to register a vehicle. I can't remember what all you need though.

I did a title transfer 4 days ago and all you need is the clear title for the vehicle and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. In IL, you are SUPPOSED to be a valid driver to register a new veh, but I have transferred A LOT of titles and they have never checked......

Kaukasion..... I C U R from Springfield.....where do you live at and what do you drive? I am from Williamsville and have probably seen you around B4.....

No appology needed man. You gotta do what you gotta do. I am sure there will be days soon when I don't have a 3rd gen to show off, but the come full circle.

To re-new my plates a few months ago, they required me to write in my insurance information on part of the form. As far as I know, its a new law to have your insurance information registered to the plates. You can transfer the title without a problem, but I don't think they like them being plated without insurance. Personally, I love the idea and hope it is a requirement and wish they would enforce it.

I agree. I think insurance should be required with registration, but in Illinois it is not at this time. Duron, you are from WI right? You may have gotten lucky and it may be required there....

whatever you do, go to a licence and Title place or insurance company for your title work and plates. The DMV's here in ILL S U C K!!!!! The treat you awfull and will **** you off. Dixon is the worst I have seen yet.

On top of that it takes months to get your title and plates but only takes a couple of weeks from a title co. or insurance co.

ILL gun laws s u c k bad too (not sure if this matters to you or not). If I could move just to get away from the gun laws I would. Gov. Blago-taxya-commie-pig is trying to take away all simi-autos and any caliber over .50, this includes shotguns. I sold my gun collection and am afraid to buy any till he is out of office.

Just my

Well my thirdgen was down for a little while and the tags expired. I got the insurance renewed before going to the dmv for my sticker because mine also had the section stating i needed to give insurance info to renew my plates, when i got there they didn't even ask for my policy info.

it is a random check for insurance currently,

its a new thing

if you get selected then you have to fill out some questionaire thingy and provide info of who your insurance is with and when it expires and such

very random

to tranfer titles its 78

tax under like 12,000 vehicle value or over 7 or 8 years of age is 25 bucks and you cant pay the tax with cash, you have to get a money order or similar

plates are 65

thats all

everything is pretty easy here,

but you have to have title,
if you have no title then you are SOL they wont do anything for you, bills of sale and notarization doesnt exist in IL,
and they dont tack money owed on titles or anything like that like in some states., i forget what thats called

In Libertyville, anything to do with re-newing plates, getting stickers etc... requires a show of insurance for the vehicle in question. They screen all people entering the building first to ensure they have all the necessary documents, etc..

I always call ahead and bring all the stuff, if you have all the docs and ca$h, they can usually get you out in a reasonable amount of time.

As much as I dislike showing proof of insurance, it does keep a lot of garbage off the road.

The cost is still a ripoff, though. Illinois motorist are currently paying for massive political corruption spanning the last 25 years. Tollways, Road construction, plates, etc..

Corruption is one thing all politicians can agree on, regardless of political affiliations. They're good like that!

I agree but man Libertyville is by far the worstfor DMV lines with Waukegan as a close 2nd. If you can, stay away from those two DMVs, you'll be there forever!

i was messing around and came across this just now:

http://www.pjstar.com/newlaws2005.html

93-0723 SB 2122 VEH CD-PROOF OF INSURANCE SB 2122 amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. It provides that for every application for vehicle registration and vehicle renewal must include the insurance policy number, expiration date of the policy liability coverage, and name of the insurer that issued the policy. Effective date January 1, 2005.

doesnt say anything about when are getting a new plate sticker though

I'm not sure, but maybe the vehicle re-newal statement involves the yearly sticker?

I was asked for proof of insurance when to I went to the DMV to get a sticker- BUT, the reason I was getting the sticker was because I had got a ticket (in the O'Hare parking lot) becuase my sticker was 5 (count 'em, 5) months overdue.

I can't believe I didn't get pulled over during that time.

Ticket at o'Hare was $50 and the late fee at DMV was $20-
Ah well.

I just moved from Ill to WI. To title a car and get plates in Illinois you need the old title and a drivers license. If you don't have a license you cannot title a car. My brother tried to when he was 15 and he had to wait a year.
