New intro as well.

Hey guys. My name is Mike. I just bought a car tonight from a guy in Newport News. I'm in Norfolk. I had been wanting to get a 3rd gen for a while and saw what I thought I was too good of a deal to pass up. The guy started posting the ad on Craigslist about a week and a half ago starting at a price of 2.8k. I got it for $900. It's a 1991 Z28 5.7 Auto. It runs decent when it gets going but has some startup issues, needs a new stereo system, dash gauge cluster, amongst I'm sure a few other things. Here's the link to his ad which didnt really say anything

http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/4087912273.html

I'm sure I'll be coming to you guys with lots of questions. So please bear with me lol

Welcome Mike. $900 sounds like a good starting point. How many miles? Any rust? More pics?

Re: New intro as well.

It had a couple of small spots in the very front as far as rust. And I'll get more pics when I am off work. The odometer stopped at 137k, so I'm not sure how much is actually on it. I just discovered the tranny sticking. I've been it maybe just the cable or throttle valve. I'm gonna if it has to be rebuilt already.

Nice save.

Plug all the water leaks first.

Listen to this man. He can tell you what can happen if you don't plug those leaks!

Re: New intro as well.

Well I apparently, it has leaks in one of the exhaust pipes and cat converters, which I see can totally happen since the exhaust comes out the side and just about grinds on any speed bump or pot hole. The highways in this area suck and totally eat up cars which low ground clearance.

I went and got 2 different quotes to getting a new exhaust and both were between $600 and $700. I'll be moving the exhaust to come out the rear instead of the side as much as I think it looks pretty cool coming out the side.

She also sputters a lot and takes a bit to get going coming from a stoplight and jerks some when I don't the foot on the pedal and am just kind of coasting. So after have a tune up and exhaust done, I'll try to fix this. I don't have a clue as to what is causing it. When getting a tune up, shoudl I have the serpentine belt and intake gasket replaced as well?

Other than that, the interior is pretty clean, it came with 2 aftermarket black leather front seats. I ordered a new radio bezel from humount (thanks to this site for the idea). Should I try to make and match the stock rear seat with the fronts or is there a place to try and get the rearseat done like the fronts? I also thought about getting custom camaro seat covers. They're black and red and would match the car. I saw them on ebay. I also saw a steering wheel I like on Grant. Is there a place to get custom automatic gear shifters without resorting to the B&M Megashifter? The stock one has electrical tape wrapped around it.

Re: New intro as well.

first welcome!

second check the firewall and cowl drain first, make sure water is not coming to the inside of the firewall when water is being flushed through the cowl drain(this is where these cars fall apart)

then get under the car and look over the floorboards

good luck with it! if i would have seen it i would have been all over it at that price

Re: New intro as well.

Well I finally saved up enough money to do some things. I got the exhaust fixed and rerouted to the rear instead of the side. I had a leak in one of the pipes and a leak in one of the converters and even a clog apparently. I still need to get a couple of Hi-flow catbacks on.

I now need to save up enough to get an oil leak taken care of. I think it's the gasket for the valve covers.

I also had a major tune up done and oil change. She is running a lot better now. I had the usual done (the plugs changed, wires checked since they're msd, fluids flushed, fuel system cleaned, and more).

Overall she is running better, but still has some issues. Next will be hi-flow catbacks being put on and getting the oil leak taken care of. After that, air filters, maybe a maf sensor and de-screen it, tb bypass, underdrive pulley system. After all of that, go up to the bigger stuff, like heads and rockers.

I do have a question. Is the FIRST intake manifold worth the money? And what would be the best head and rocker combo and cam to go with it if I went that route?
