Window Tint in VA or WV
Well, it finally happened. Two years and 10 days later, I finally got a job offer in Reston, VA. The only problem is, I live in Orlando. My question has to do with window tint. How bad are the cops in VA or WV regarding tint levels? I checked and found that 35% is legal on all side and rear windows in WV and 50% on side and 35% on rear in VA. Can I get away with 20% or will I get nailed? Any info will be appreciated

i don't think that they can pull you over for window tint as a 1st offence. they have to get you for speeding, broken tail light, etc. to get you pulled over 1st, then they can mention the window tent.
where at in reston will you be working? I work in tysons corner.

You'll be in fairfax county, and fairfax county cops are verrrrrry strict. Just be careful. Or do it legally.
I live in fairfax county by the way (Chantilly).

In Va, window tint IS a primary stop. They have a meter that they can read the tint level and can write for the infraction. Now, if you're in NoVA(which you will be), Tidewater, Richmond or the interstate area...
yeah, you'll probably be hassled, but the rest of the state, cops really don't care that much about it, unless you are busted for something else (speeding, etc) and you give the cop a hardtime and make him look for other violations. Pretty much the same with all non-stock equipment. Law says "If it ain't original...it ain't legal" which means most of the aftermarket stuff (which amazes me, they DO sell in Va) can get you busted. One way around the law legally...go to the Dr and have write a letter authorizing a higher tint level for health reasons (or a child, etc). IT works and is done often.

as long as you don't drive like an idiot you might be fine. It's 35% in MD and I've driven my car for 3 yrs or so as a daily driver, and never had a problem. knock on wood
does this mean that beautiful car will be at Nats?

Which one are you asking about? The one with the window tint is my 03 Monte Carlo.
I want to get to some shows this year. Being out of work for 2 years really cramped my style, but hopefully I can get to some good stuff this year.
I'm thinking about moving to MD now. I checked out WV 2 weeks ago and decided against that. I'm considering Prince William County in VA or the Frederick, MD area. It appears that there are a lot of shows up north so I'm looking forward to them. The problem is, my car will still remain in FL until I can sell my house and buy a new one. We'll see what happens. I might be at some shows without the car!!

I would love to see your car as that is exactly the same car my buddy had in 87. I know when he bought it, we both were floored that a Camaro could sticker over 21K.
He traded his 86 GN on it. And then traded the Camaro on a 87 GN. We played with that car alot. It was running lo-mid 13's but wasn't fast enough. That's why he went back to the GN.

Scott ,
Even though you probably will not need to know this info for the state of WV but you'll at least know the laws if you're in the area and they stop you.
On the side windows 35 % in as low as you can go but on the back window anything is legal. I had 5 % on my back window for years until I finally had so many scatches on it I decided to remove it. That dag gone peice of alumimun I put up inside of my hood is a total pain to fool with and caused a lot of scatches before I finally got a leather bag to haul it in.

I don't understand, craig. The aluminum is what,3/8" or 1/2"? How did that scratch the back window? Didn't it just fit right in the hatch?
Just so everybody knows, I put 30% on my Monte Carlo. I'm currently in VA wearing FL plates so I should be OK for awhile. We'll see what happens when I transfer the plates to VA or MD.

I know in Maryland that you can't have any tint on the windows when inspecting it to get tags. The only way to have tint on the windows during inspection is to get it certified through Maryland State Police. Some inspection stations might not be as strict, but just letting you know what its suppose to be in Maryland.
