My new money pit 1988 formula 350
Just picked up this 1988 formula 350 as a nice little project to work on.Its been sitting for a little while behind a guys garage just waiting to be loved. The motor, transmission, formula hood,a/c and all the under hood wiring is long gone.It was at some point made a 5 speed so has clutch pedals and a monster hole cut in floor for shifter.Ive been wanting a formula 350 project for a long time.I didn't want a all original stock one that would be better off being kept that way.Im going to do a carburetor 350 and 700r4 and put a/c back in.

My parts car has arrived should have a formula hood soon working a trade deal. The formula will get stripped given a temporary black paint job. Then I will reassemble it back with the red car and into a driver car for a while.

What's the deal w the fender flares on the red car? I've seen a pic of them before on another car. Were they custom or a special edition thing. That style flare is one of the cooler things on the second gen cars.

Cool. In 1988, I wanted a 1988 Formula 350 but didn't have the financial means back then...

I have an 82 trans am and they're different. Much smaller than that. These are just really unique. I like the ones on my 82. I've just never really seen ones like this other than a pic years ago.

That looks so much better, did you trade it for that Daytona hood?

Re: My new money pit 1988 formula 350
So the formula 350 has no wiring harness coming up from inside passenger fender. My parts car has no wiring coming up from inside passenger fender.I know the computer side harness is not very important on a carburetor car.My question would be
1.dont I still need the computer for overdrive lockup
2.do I need to run the 350 computer to run the 140mph cluster or will it work on the parts har 305 harness
3.is any of the a/c control on the passenger side computer harness I'm missing wiring to a/c compressor
My next harness question is the driver side harness the formula 350 has all wires cut off couple inches off firewall. The parts car has the harness but cooling fan and fuel pump relays cut off and aftermarket ones installed. So I would like to have it back to factory style relays with bracket. Will I run into issues if I just bolt on a good harness to the firewall. Is there a difference from engine side to dash side
The formula 350 had the dual cooling fans
Parts car is a single cooling fan
Or should I look into a silverado ford contour Taurus fan setup

The wheel well flares on the red car are part of the 1988-only Z20 Special Appearance Package for non-gfx Firebirds. The option was a throwback to the 2ndgen Trans Am. The package also included a 2ndgen-style rear spoiler, but it's not on the red car.
I see the blue car already has LS1 rear brakes, which is a nice upgrade. Probably a 4thgen axle, judging by the way the rear wheels stick out.
Also, looks like the nose of the blue car hasn't been drilled for a license plate bracket. Good. Don't do it if you don't have to or think you can get away without one. It will deform the bumper cover.
The fiberglass hood that was on the blue car is the hood Hawk's fabbed into a C6-style hood for its Stormtrooper Formula a few years back.

That hood on the hawks car is an IMSA hood that was cut to see the blower like the vets were. None of these cars have that hood. One is a cowl, one is a stock power bulge and one was an aftermarket Daytona hood. The power bulge hood was used the make the IMSA hood. The IMSA is a mirror image of the power bulge on passenger side and a 3/4 inches taller.

Pictures below of Hawk's creating its Stormtrooper hood. A full series of pictures were on Hawk's website when they were doing it, but they deleted them after completion. If anyone, such as the OP who has/had a Daytona hood, wanted to create an exact replica of the Stormtrooper, it's a Daytona hood.
This is the ISMA hood. It's based on the factory Power Bulge hood; different lines than the Stormtrooper/Daytona hood.

You're totally right. That's a lot of work on hawks part. That's impressive.

1988 Pontiac Firebird RPO Z20 Special Appearance Package. This was a one year only package for 1988 and only available on base model Firebirds.

Totally not saying anyone is wrong so please don't take it that way, that hood must have taken an incredible amount of work to look this way. I wonder if they swapped it out at some point. If you look at the finished underside pics online it looks more like the IMSA hood. Either way it's a crazy setup and I have no knowledge of working w fiberglass!

Re: My new money pit 1988 formula 350
Two more pictures. I inverted the ISMA hood picture to give it a similar perspective as the raised Stormtrooper/Daytona hood in its picture. While this keeps his thread at/near the top, 4valvemach has already settled his hood situation, so we should probably let him have his thread back.

The ghetto cut a hole for the fuel pump mod.....😡 Hopefully the red car doesn't have this done to it and I can cut and weld that in.I also need to weld in the shifter section and passenger front floor but floors do look good.Someone did dyno mat or similar from firewall to taillight panel took all day to get it all out thats whats in the bag. Some cleaner to remove the glue then i can start welding

It has Trans Am tail lights. They look good. I wonder what was done with the wiring to make them work...

I did trim the under hood brace and where I cut was then given a rolled edge with hammer and dolly. So now the 14inch air cleaner fits with plenty of room to spare.Im not sure on the intake looks like a cheap version of edelbrock. The carburetor I'm using is a quadrajet and air cleaner assembly is just a normal edelbrock 14 inch with standard base.

For the front have no idea , the motor & transmission are in does have umi kmember. It was a nightmare to get coil springs in but I think/hope it will settle lower.

I took a pair of front springs out of my Z-28 parts-car and put 'em in my Firebird. The front sat 1-1/2" too high and would not settle.
I had to take 'em back out & remove 1/2 a coil. That did the trick...
