You're not alone. But that's what SLP supplied with the dual cold air kit, and why I'm looking for a reach-around.... er... Work-around that will let me use the stock hose. Of course the easy solution would be to just use a T-ram instead of the stock Tuned Port. But that's another story...

Yeah, that hose is UGLY!
Would an adjustable housing work? Looks like if you could angle the neck to come straight at you in that photo, you could snake it though in a fairly factory location.

Not picking guys, but I have to ask...is the dual just for looks? It would appear that either branch of that dual setup is as large or larger than the necked down rubber flex joint ahead of the throttle body.

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
I've always assumed SLP didn't want to R&D a waterneck that that would bolt on the TPI intake, and angle down under the belt like the one on the T-ram. I'd expect the waterneck bolts on the TPI intake being fore/aft would put the front bolt under the waterneck outlet. Hmm...
Been wondering if the dual cold air will require chopping the upper rad hose support off the fan shroud. Looks like the T-box would come close to contacting it. Figuring out exactly how I want to deal with all these little details are a large part of why I've never gotten the dual cold air installed on a car. But hey, if I need to hack a hose hanger, and live with a radiator hose alternator reach around, and a battery shut-off switch, it's no big deal on the Birdo El Dirto.

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
This is my SLP dual CAI setup. I tried to make it as Firehawk accurate as possible with improvements whenever I could. Many thanks to TTOP350 for his patience with my pestering him for pictures of his Firehawk so I could get the look I was after.
I had to get creative with the upper radiator hose as I was not going to use the setup in the previous pic going over the valve cover. I wound up using 2 different hoses and a piece of metal pipe to make it work correctly.

It's not for me.......IMO it detracts from the entire engine comp....looks too over bearing
and what does it actually DO for you?.....not a thing....it comes down to what you prefer in under hood visual aesthetics

There is power to be gained from a freer flowing intake. The old K&N clamped on the throttlebody is good for a small boost until the rad starts to heat up. The dual CAI pretty much ensures that the intake isn't going to be a restriction, and the air is going to be coming from outside the engine compartment. That it's an uncommon piece of old school hardware with a certain pedigree, and looks bad ***, is all just icing on the cake.

I'll have to look into those bands. As for the rest I respect BizJetTech's opinion. To each his or her own as to what they like. I personally never went for the Pro Street theme though I did admire the craftsmanship in a quality job.
It just wasn't my thing whereas Pro Touring and the Optima Street car series and recent builds by Detroit Speed and Hawks is where my interest is at. I've always admired the 1st gen Firehawks and this was just my way of having a piece of that.

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
From back in my days as a dyno operator, I never really saw any "HP gain" on a chassis dyno from nothing to a CAI. (did have a new hemi dodge charger pick up 23rwhp with a K&N kit, really think it had a lot to do with how the maf was mounted tho)
As everyone knows, the CAI comes in to play up at speed on the road or track and the ever so slight pressure increase you get where those boxes pickup cooler outside air. I would get a repeatable gain at the track with the box vs without.
A single SLP box works very well and would be fine for at least 90% of the cars here. IMO, the dual is overkill even at the 92 firehawks rating of 350HP, but it looks schnazzy (to me anyway)

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
You don't usually see a "major" gain unless you're replacing a very restrictive filter housing and intake duct work with an FIPK from K&N or similar kits. The Camaro had the better breathing due to the fact of the higher hood line and air coming in through the front opening whereas the Firebird had to take in air from the side and the original air filter housing wasn't as open as the SLP box was. Figures why you see primarily birds with the SLP CAI and not Camaros. I honestly don't recall ever seeing a Camaro with one.

I think it looks snazzy too. Just don’t know if I personally would do all that relocating and fiddling to have one. Mongoose did it right, though!

Thanks Tony. That's sort of what I expected. And to each his own on the appearance, but I think it's cool too. It's the modern dual snorkle, like an L69, which I love visually.

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
For me personally, the dual CAI is one of those things I've always thought was cool. It doesn't really matter if it adds 3.5hp at 9,000rpm or 150hp at 3,500, it's a piece of nostalgia for me. I've been carrying one around since I was in my early 20s, and that's all the reason I need to still get excited about it. But yeah, it's not for a mostly stock car. And the fiddling isn't worth while on a mostly stock car, hence why I never got around to putting it on my Formula, and why I have a single for the Formula. On the other hand, I went out and bought this beater 6cyl Firebird to chop up and build the way I want, and the dual CAI with all it's relocating and massive absurdity is PERFECT for that car. The boy racer trapped in my inner monologue is going to love having that big beautiful mess of plastic and fiberglass under the hood. Kind of like how people go nuts for SLP runners, or strut tower braces, or factory louvers. It's a piece of history in it's own right, no one else has to like it, I'm doing it for circa 2000 Drew.

It's like anything else, it's your car and you like, mod it, just don't cry when a few don't ! However, if a boatload of people dislike it or likes/comments are very low, you may want to rethink some of your lifes choices lol.

I thinking the hose may have routed this way for clearance of the stock AC compressor with the stock Vbelt? Maybe, maybe not

Cool just found this thread thanks T. I personally like the dual cold air intakes I had to buy a car to get one kind of like T-rams
I like your car Tony what mods have been done now?
I love the TTA's too a friend of mine got one when he graduated high school and still has it, that car sold me on new car performance and mileage I ran him one day in my 69Z - I spun and he got a couple lengths on me and I couldn't catch him and his had a decent stereo system and A/C!
lets see some more of your collection please

Re: My 89 formula 350 ASC vert
Well, since the trans wasn't quite done in my other 89 (ttop350) I semi dusted off the ole vert and put about 600 miles on it this weekend at Firebird Fest 21.
Also, refreshed and added to my "need to fix" list for the car.
Little pizza for the gang
This is Don Johnnson, he was working the last day at Norwood and has pictures with the last car off the line. Super nice guy with some good stories.

I may have some more pictures to upload when I get a min

Sure a picture of a beautiful Formula ASC Convertible doing parade laps with a bunch of other firebirds on a race track is cool but can this thread please get back on its intended topic of arguing about the SLP dual snorkel intake.
IMHO its ugly, completely non-functional, and you should immediately remove it and mail it to me (I will PM you my address).
Thank you.

Not to bad for a driver. Maybe some day I'll paint it but for now, it's nice not having to worry about the paint and being able to just enjoy the car.

I put a floorjack under the arm, unbolt the balljoint, whack it with a hammer then lower the arm. spring will pop out or may need a little help with a pry bar.

Do you have your car on a lift when your doing this? Seems like a scary procedure, I've heard the springs can go flying across the room. It would be cool to find a way to get the ball joint off, and then use the lift to slowly raise the car until the spring is free. So you can stand back away from it all.

You can take a length of chain or cable and snake it through / around the spring and another fixed point on the chassis (lower control arm mounting point). If the spring shifts unexpectedly, this will prevent it from coming out and traveling more than a few inches (obviously, don't use 20' of chain).

I've done them both ways. More on the floor than on the lift. Which ever way you do it, just be safe about it.

Looking for a nice rust free set of front A arms from a 89 up 16" wheel/WS6 car if any southern friends have anything laying around they want to sell.

What brand(s). inner/outer did you install? Welded or bolted? What changes in the car did you experience, after installation? Thanks.
