Re: Post your firebird pics
i removed the gold stripe ,went back to the cross lace rims and i love my trans am again . if i had a tuned port i would hunt down a stock hood, but with an edlebrock rpm ,a carb spacer and a 14x3" open element air cleaner is touching my cowl hood almost.i need to source some clips for my aero spoiler at some point and swap it out. i added a set of hood pins to keep the hood properly lined as it is fiberglass and had a little twist in it,like many of them do.
this car has a new lease on life with the head swap, cam swap, intake and carb swap, new exhaust from the heads back.getting it to this point has been a lot of work, time and money and the car definitely isnt perfect but im pretty satisfied.
now it will will roast the tires and seems considerably quicker than my old l98 iroc, which is incredible for an LG4 dog that now has as much bite as it has bark

This thread rocks, just spent an hour looking at all the birds. The rally wheels remind me of a 1974 Grand Prix that I bought from my grandparents back in the early 90s, sweet ride, power and style.
Sorry to pollute the thread, but it was a beautiful Pontiac!

Re: Post your firebird pics
i installed a freshened up set of 1997 vortec heads(L31) i shaved about 0.025"-0.03" off (but oddly the LG4 had dished pistons and from my understanding the 1986 LG4's are supposed to be flat tops,go figure... so im sure the compression is barely 9 to 1)i added LS6 beehive springs,Comp retainers and new felpro stem seals after cleaning up the valves and lapping them(did a very light port cleanup with some sanding rolls)....
for a cam i went with a GMPP Flat tappet from a 290/350 crate engine.it apparently is identical to the L-82 corvette cam.here are the specs:Camshaft Type (P/N 3896962): Hydraulic flat tappet
Camshaft Lift (in.): .450 intake /.460 exhaust
Camshaft Duration (@.050 in.): 222° intake / 222° exhaust
it sure woke up the car along with the hooker 2460 headers, dougs y-pipe(attached to the existing magnaflow cat-back)
edlebrock performer rpm intake and a holley ultra 650 dp with mechanical secondaries...works well being a stick car.
i have an older vacuum adv distributor as all the ccc q-jet stuff was long gone when i got the car unfortunately
i bought the heads(actually a complete L31 vortec 350) to do the typical 350 swap but i ended up freshening up the heads first, then thought why not see what they will do on this 305 for sh.its and giggles...i also had the flat tappet cam and lifters laying around and i knew i would never use them in any of my 350 builds as they are all roller blocks and i already have 2 decent upgraded roller cams (one is out of a sp350/357 crate engine, the other is comparable in specs) that ill try when i go the 350 route.im definitely pleasantly surprised and not in a hurry to 350 swap the car now that it has decent power for what it is....im getting too darn old to need 500 horsepower(still want it though)i cant afford the gas now when i get on it too often, lol
thankfully it runs on garbage 87 octane without complaint, one benefit of lower compression.....

thanks,i prefer the gta rims too and as a bonus they give me a better ride(i also finally put on a set of koni yellow adjustable front struts, what a difference)
i need a set of decent rear shocks at some point as im sure they are getting long in the tooth(there are kyb gas adjusts on the back, kind of want konis now)
i really love your car,one of my favorites on here!!

Re: Post your firebird pics
no,still the old 305 with vortec heads, cam, new headers/exhaust etc.just scored an msd hei and b/n taylor full metal jacket wires for $100..checked summit, the cost wouldve been $550 to my door.hell of a deal,i jumped on it and threw it all in.runs like a top now! ill get a 350 in this car eventually(need to get rings, bearings, ball hone one of the blocks i have etc ) but this sh i tty old 305 just keeps running good ,will easily blow off the tires and being an old man it does what it needs to do for me.
your car must be a beast with what you've got going on under the hood...must be 350+ horsepower easily.
i loved my stock 5.7 tpi iroc i used to have, signed my name in the parking lot at work numerous times.lol
i finally made a set of stainless hood pins at work and put them in,makes the hood cooperate and fit nicer

First track day with the car: Most everything survived except one tire rubbing during right hand corners. Got to try out the Turn One steering box, UMI a-arms and springs. Lots of 911s and Vette's - most of those guys stopped by to tell me about the 3rd gen they had when they were a kid.

Re: Post your firebird pics
thanks,im in no hurry to change it and im quite happy with the performance.i do however miss the undeniable low end grunt of the 5.7 tpi i had in my old iroc but the standard trans adds a new element of driver engagement that i cant seem to live without,at least for the time being.that being said, one of my favorite third gens ive ever owned was a 1982 iron duke,4 speed standard camaro with zero options, yes it wasnt fast but it was fun.i just loved the car but it was stolen, torched and totaled in the late 80s/early 90s.shortly after i picked up a black 1984 berlinneta (5.0/700r4) with about 25,000 km and drove it daily for over 10 years in canada winter and summer.

Re: Post your firebird pics
Cruising the coast is next week. Huge gathering of cars Ive looked forward to spending a few days at all year and I think I broke a rocker arm or bent a pushrod over the weekend. Havent had time to dig in and fix it working 12+ hr days on these paving jobs. I may or may not have over-revved my engine playing around with a Dodge Charger Friday night... Hope its a simple fix

Pretty good knocking sound. Not a rod knocking but More than a lifter tap. 99% sure I bent a pushrod. Car was spinning bad on a takeoff I think it revved to close to 6k and I normally don't rev it past 5200-5500

My oldest brother and I both have Cruisin' the Coast on our bucket list. Probably 2 years out. I hope you get to make it.
6K doesn't seem like too crazy of an RPM. But obviously something happened. Do we have the same came (GM PN94666492 / Crane 2032)? And what springs are you using?

No, using the stock #049 GM cam, the hotter of the L98 cams very mild low lift cam. Z28 springs which I already had one of those break. Had ran the car pretty hard Im not surprised I actually broke something. When I get a day Im not working daylight til dark I will pop the valvecover and see bout getting her fixt up. I don't think its anything major.
