Re: Post your firebird pics
All,
I'm going to post up a full thread soon with more pictures, but here's a few teasers from my 9000+ mile road trip that I took this summer. Annapolis, MD to Fort Nelson, British Columbia to Ozona, TX. With a lot more stops along the way.
Looking North towards the Great Lakes bridges at Mackinaw City, Michigan.
Looking out over Lake Superior, Thunder Bay Canada
Crossing the "Arctic Watershed", Northern Ontario
Entering Manitoba on the Trans-Canada Highway
Heavy flooding somewhere in Northern Manitoba

Dude, that is so awesome! These two shots honestly make me want to hop into my car right now and drive it cross country. I have always dreamed of going on a road trip in a sports car and you are really tempting me now! Def want to see the thread about the whole trip once you get it up!! How long did the whole trip take you to complete, and did you have a destination and a planned route, or did you just wing it? Very curious!

Re: Post your firebird pics
Thanks for the compliments guys, I really appreciate it. I had a blast, and saw more pretty country than one person should ever have a right to. My original plan was to drive from Annapolis, MD to Skagway, AK utilizing as much as the Trans-Canadian highway as possible, then hit as many Rocky Mountain States as I could on the way back down to West Texas. After looking at the route a little bit, I decided to enter Canada at Sault St. Marie instead of Niagara Falls due to the high population and long time involved in driving from Niagara Falls to Sault St. Marie. Instead, I convoyed with a classmate in his '93 Lincoln Mark VIII as far as Columbus, OH. Then I cut due north and headed for an Upper Michigan crossing.
Headed across Canada, I drove the entire loop around Lake Superior, hit Winnipeg, cut northwest for a while along Highway 16 (Yellowhead highway), turned south at the Saskatchewan border due to bad road conditions, drove through a mess of flooding on the way to Regina, then cut up again through Saskatoon, North Battleford, and Edmonton. At Edmonton I turned south to Calgary, and then drove northwest along the spine of the Rockies through Banff and Jasper National Parks. From there I dropped off the divide to Prince George, B.C. and turned North towards Alaska.
Turned out I couldn't make it all the way up to Skagway, the roads just got too rough. Lots of 18 wheeler traffic with chained tires all winter had completely removed the pavement in a lot of places. I turned around about 100 miles from the Yukon border and pitstopped again in Prince George. From there I drove the Gold Rush river valleys south to Kelowna and the Mediterranean lake country there in Central Southern British Columbia, going as far South as Osoyoos right next to the U.S. border. From there I struck due west over the Rockies again to Vancouver and Victoria (on Vancouver Island).
Alas, with all good stories, there was tragedy involved. At this point in the trip I met the rear end of a large Ford Truck who decided to pull out into the highway without looking for oncoming cars smaller than him. I gave her all the brakes I had, but still hit hard enough to do significant front end and frame damage. Punched the radiator, destroyed the A/C lines and electric fan, and knocked out one headlight and turn signal, among other things. A very nice wrecker driver in Port Alberni let me use his lot and the winch on his wrecker to patch things up, straighten out the fender off of the tire, ditch the hood and put in a new radiator, and wire things together enough to get back home.
The return trip took me through Washington State, including Mt. Rainer National Park, Idaho (McCall, ID and Craters of the Moon National Monument), Wyoming and Montana (Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park), Utah (Antelope Island State Park, Arches National Park, and Canyonlands National Park), Arizona (Monument Valley), New Mexico, and West Texas. She did pretty well considering the conditions. I got an average of 31 mpg on the way back (most likely due to the inherent cold air intake of not having a hood). I also had to take every possible precaution to avoid traffic due to the lack of a cooling fan. I almost got burned up by a herd of Buffalo in Yellowstone, haha. Had to keep shutting it off while I waited for traffic to move up a hundred yards or so, for two hours straight.
I started the trip on June 1, and pulled into home in Texas on June 24. I did the first 3000 miles of the trip from Annapolis to Edmonton Alberta in less than 3 days. I would have put stuff up earlier, but I still can't bring myself to post pictures of her after the wreck. I'm waiting on insurance to sort things out right now so I can afford another donor car to start swapping my $20,000 worth of goodies into. They're offering me $2500 plus me keeping the car with a salvage title. They had the car itself valued at $3500. I told them no way. I'm making a written counteroffer placing the value of the car at $7000. We'll see whether or not they will play ball with that or a lawyer will have to get involved.
That being said, if any of you guys know where a clean 85-92 Firebird, Formula, or Trans Am is near Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, or Louisiana, please let me know. I'm looking for something that's been well cared for and little to no modifications if possible. A bone stock 305 or V6 car would be awesome. Low miles is a plus but not necessary. Don't particularly care if it has a drivetrain or not. I have everything I need but a good body. That's what I need to find.

Getting closer to getting it on the road. Prepped the hood some before I put it back on.
Expecting my exhaust to be here today and put it on and itll be nearly ready for the road. Gotta get it tagged and inspected and I should be good to go.
It is a formula btw. I just like this spoiler better, plus its fiberglass and cheaper than the fiberglass wrap around. (500$ yikes!)

Re: Post your firebird pics
Well, here's a few pictures of my old car........wish I never sold it It was a 89 GTA, lots of stuff done to it.
Here is the 92 Bird that I just picked up last month. Its a work in progress. Lots of plans for this one as well. Hope to get some new wheels and a ram air hood on it this winter. Probably will lower it too. Also would like to redo the interior on this one as well.
Here are the wheels that I am looking at getting.

The only things that I have done so far is tinted the side markers and tail lights with night shades and painted the door molding black. I am thinking about the black and white theme. Maybe after I get a hood on there, I may put some dark charcoal gray stripes on it. Along with some tint and those wheels I am looking at. Should be pretty sweet if everything comes together good.

Re: Post your firebird pics
Some guy had it sitting in storage for the last 7 yrs and finally decided to part with it. Its got 110000 miles on it. 5.0 TBI. I paid 2800 for it. Not to bad. Wish it was not a base though. I got the itch again this spring and looked at quite a few third gens, Camaro's, Firebird's and TA's. Nothing that I looked at was even close to as good condition as this one was. It took a few good hours of polishing it to get it to look like that. The paint was extremely dirty! He never had it covered in the storage shed, at least that is what it looked like.
The only things that I have done so far is tinted the side markers and tail lights with night shades and painted the door molding black. I am thinking about the black and white theme. Congrats on such a clean find. I too am in the market and would love to find something like that. To be honest, I found one on craigslist yesterday with a near identical photo to the one you posted. I was very sad that you had already bought that car until I realized it was a hardtop and yours has T-tops. It might be in my future. I've also got my eye on a couple of white 91-92 Formulas. That's a good color on a clean body.

I don't know, I emailed him about the extra parts I had, no response. And I'm guessing he hasn't joined up here, so I have no idea what happened to the car.
edit:
looks like it's up for sale again.

The best part is, those are my pics he's using.

I think that's a steal for 2k all it needs besides a bigger motor is to sell the 4th gen wing to pay for a fiberglass 91-92 aero spoiler.

Re: Post your firebird pics
Agreed. I had every single nut and bolt off that car, there's not a spot of rust on it, and the extra parts alone are worth more than 2k.
I don't regret selling it, because my GTO is twice the car my old bird was, but I do regret selling it to him, because I think he expected to just drive it as is. Realistically, the car had 130k on it, with a weak tranny, stiff suspension, I just don't see it as a daily driver. Now, with a motor swap, sure.
It deserves a better home.

Re: Post your firebird pics
Simply your opinion, I would love to own a 91-92 formula(ultimate third gen) but it is just not my time. One day I will and my wife will tell me to buy one because she wants one. Hard top formula just for racing. Just acknowledge cause I will get her into it as well! I will be considered old by then but oh well...will think that 10 years from when i posted this I knew nothing bout road racing or autocrossing...hope to know more by then.o

I have to agree with you. While I do like my 89 gta I woulda killed to have a 91-92 Formula. I just couldn't find any that were a 350 with t-tops so I settled and got my 89 gta L98 with tops.
