Re: 1987 5.7L GTA
Wow if that is how the car looks now it looks good. I did'nt see anything wrong with the paint on the car? I used a Random Orbital buffer on my car and I really improved the condition of the paint. Well about the only differences in my car and yours is. Different Instrument panel mine is digital your is analog. I would rather have the analog myself. Your car is like new yet. Can't say that about mine. You have the dual exhaust tips. Does your car have the bird center caps in the wheels. Someone said that I should have the WS6 Pontiac Performance Suspension center cap. I have looked at pictures of the 87 GTA and every picture I have looked at the center caps were all of the bird. The WS6 center caps are expensive. The bird caps I think cost me around or over $60 dollars for a set of 4. I still need to get the slp cold air kit installed on it yet. Post some more pictures of the car when you get a chance. Nice looking car.

Re: 1987 5.7L GTA
Hi Steve,
The center caps are the bird type and I have the WS6 package. When new I purchased Bilstein struts and rear shocks,Momo Pinifarina Leather steering wheel,Abarth dual exhaust tips and some aftermarket suspension parts(I can't remember the brand but they were supposedly the hot ticket at the time. The struts and suspension stuff were never installed. I still have the original steering wheel, my Dad has these parts in his attic, atleast that's what I remember.
I am going to have the car repainted as part of the roof and hood have sun damage. I wish my dad had left it covered but when my sister became ill 3 years ago he had alot on his plate. I intend to keep the car for another 20 years or so,if I'm lucky, so having it redone doesn't bother me. The inside still looks new, so putting some money into it makes sense. I will post some before and after pics when I get it back from the shop. Thanks for the kind words.

For 87, center caps with the 'bird & not the WS6 ones. Those started in '88, so your good there.

I'm glad your restoring the car. That was very noble of you to let your sister have your car. I like the floor mats with the gta logo. The seat covers are different too. I don't have original front floor mats for my gta. I need to get my car running right. When the car is cold it idles good. When the car warms up it idles rough. Good luck with the car. Here is a link to a photo album I just posted https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/album.php?albumid=717

Steve,
You might check your TPS sensor, these TPI motors can be a challenge. I remember when everybody changed the O2 sensors for every kind of problem too.
One change I did make was to add a tempeture reostat to my fan circuit. The Darn fans wouldn't come on till about 210 degrees if I remember correctly. The car now operates at about 180-200 all day, that's a lot better IMHO.

I purchased the cover from a aftermarket company when I aquired the car in '87. IIRC the company was "Dashcover(s)". I don't know if their still in business, back then they were a hot item.

They still make dash pad covers for the 87 firebird. There a hot item that keeps the dash cool. I could use some seat covers myself. My seats are so badly faded that need to be re-dyed. GM really fumbled the ball when they did'nt put some type of sun protector on the seat belts. Mine are badly faded and the sleeves that belts fit in are cracked.

You don't see too many of these cars still in the hands of their original owners. It looks like it's still in really good condition and shouldn't need a whole lot to have it looking like new.
What happened, did you just quit driving it at some point?

He did a very noble thing for his dying sister. He let her have the car. He took the car back when his sister passed away. So he is restoring the car. I wish the person I bought my car from took care or the car that well. Oh well I had a lemon and it is becoming lemonade. Mine still needs alotta work. Mine is a diamond in the rough.

Re: 1987 5.7L GTA
Long story but yes. The car averages 400 miles a year,it was always stored at my fathers house. In 1999 I gave the car to my sister who was disabled, the car had 7300 miles on it then. My dad gave my sister rides in the car. This past year she passed away and I received the car back recently. Getting the car back has been a bitter sweet event. The car now has 9700 miles on it and needs to have some paint touched up but otherwise is about perfect.
