I think the problem with insurance companies is they are just plain cheap. Its not just third gens, they do it to second and first gen owners too. Ive seen people get offered 3000 bucks from insurance for a 69 Camaro.

Just saw this.. That REALLY sucks. I've always loved the way your car looked!! Really sorry to hear, but glad you're fixing it back up. Those pictures just made me sick. I bought mine with the salvage rebuilt title. I'm glad to hear you did get the $9,500 for it. How many cars even today can claim they got 50% of their new value at 17 years old.

F that. I beat the shat out of my car. It breaks and I fix it. I don't see the point in owning a car if you're not going to drive it. I run my car hard. And when it gets back from the bodyshop I'll continue to run it hard.

Abuse and neglect are two different things. I truly hope you meant neglect and not abuse.

I regret getting rid of my first car, an '87 formula because I thought it was totaled. However, it could've been fixed if I put time into it. But if I didn't get rid of that, I probably would've never gotten this one.

Re: What I saw this morning...

Yikes, my old firebird didn't have an e-brake cable...I was always afraid of something like that happening to it. Of course, I don't live on a cliff, like you.

Sorry to see your ride get busted up. It was definitely one of the best looking firebird convertibles I've ever seen.

Hope you get it fixed up soon.

Re: What I saw this morning...

Wow man, that sucks! Your car is a great example of a gorgeous, well done thirdgen!

When I first saw the pictures and read the story I figured the damage would be a LOT worse. Not saying it's not bad, and it definitely does suck, but it could have been much worse. I know when I wrecked my '84 it tore me up. It was a lot worse than yours though. But like you said, it's a good chance to make improvements, I know I did

Insurance companies are weird with totaling/not totaling vehicles. They did some odd stuff when my sister's Subaru when we got rear-ended. They totaled it out, but gave us almost 10 grand for it. we bought it back, fixed it for 5 grand and didn't even end up with a salvage title because it happened in NY, the car's titled in ME, and somehow the communication didn't happen or something. So it has a clear title LOL. Scary huh?

Anyway...like I said, it could be worse:

But anyway, good luck with the revival process, keep us posted!!

Re: What I saw this morning...

I always thought that Casper was supposed to be a " Friendly ghost ". taking your nice vert on a joyride like that. *S*

but seriously bro, I'm sorry about your incident. as it's been said before by many others, it could have been worst. it could have gone for a swim. it could have slammed into the house. it could have hit somebody. and it didn't have to have a happy ending. ( no body was hurt ).

I'm glad to hear that you have brought the car back, ( for short money ), you are getting paid for your loss, ( at least somewhat ), and that your car will live again.
I'm also glad to hear that you're giving it an even greater upgrade from what it was. ( Awsome work by the way ), with a bigger more powerful powerplant. sounds like it will be even better than before. *S*

My best wishes on your second build of her. keep us posted with some more pics.

This post is a couple years old now. Ian has since repaired the cosmetic damage and dropped an LSx in the engine bay. His car is still badass! Plus, I got his old engine!

OMG LOL! I totally was reading along like holy crap... glanced at the date and saw Sept and missed the 08...

What ever happened to the title? Did they salvage/retitle it?

wow good story to read & keep in the back of your mind.

I have my own stick car brake story... Thank goodness it was not so tragic. I have a fiero that has a screwy park brake. I have to keep adjusting it to keep it working. This day the car decided to add insult to injury. The fuel gauge decided to stick at 1/4 tank and I thought wow its been at 1/4 a while. About that time the car konked out. I just rolled off the road. Of course I was on a uphill grade. I pulled the brake it held and as I stepped out it it still held. About the time I shut the door it started to roll. I grabbed the fender just about the time it used my foot as a tire block. Well it was stopped... I thought.... this is not good. To add to my luck the shoulder fell off if it rolled back a few more feet, so there was no roll to back to a flat spot. I looked all over for something and remembered I had a tire block in the back my uncle gave me week previous. Now how to get to it... LOL! I had to rock the car to get my foot out. Then I did this silly push and hold walk down the car with my hands to keep it from running off. I threw the block and the back tire. Then I looked across the street and noticed a guy staring out the window at me. At least the gas station was within sight.

"Rebuilt" title now. No worries for me though because I'm going to be buried in this thing. Been DD'ing it for 7 years now and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. The car is just going to get more radical and modified as time goes on.

Good for you! Our daily driver Civic that is going to be my daughter's car holds a "rebuilt" title. We got it about a year and a half ago. Its an 2003 had 36,000 miles and was selling for $6000.00 Everything seemed fine with it, so we were like ok! Its been a great car. Only issue we had was getting an insurance company to insure it. We had to switch to Progressive. Can't complain, we added a car and our rate still went down!

Yeah my buddy had a similar situation. Bought a '00 civic back in '02 or something with a salvage title. Saved a ton and he's still driving it!

The branded title doesn't really bother me. I've had the car a hair under ten years and I'm never going to sell it. I've heard others say that about their car before but with a decade of hard work under my belt, it could never be worth it. Although, that would be nice. I'd imagine it makes it easy to keep shoddily fixed wrecks on the road though?

And I really mean slight. Like, Milla Jovovich breasts slight.

As i not dare laugh at ur situation, ur journalist skills are spot on!! in all honesty it broke my heart to see and read this. I think u have one of the most "clean" and well put together verts here on the bird. I come to Seattle for work weekly and I wanted to stop up there and see you and John (87350Iroc) in Everett. If there is anything you may need that I can find here in Norcal, I will update you and bring it up to u. I am "officially" putting together an ebrake setup for my car now. Sucks that this is the way u had to learn this lesson, but at least you werent in the car and headed "all" the way over and into the water. Thats a long freakin fall.

Re: What I saw this morning...

Just remember that when you have a salvaged title, you have to get inspected and get paper work. Not sure what your laws are. You can get a clear title here in Az if your inspection is paid for and cleared by a professional. I think the insurance didn't do to bad by you. Also buying back for $218 is awesome! Few ways to look at it, LSX...cool...Fast. Or try and keep it original, or buy a new one with the 9-grand$$

Hahaha just realized old thread. Great read though!!!
