My 1984 Trans-Am.

Hey all I wanted to post some pictures of my T.A, Its a work in progress/dayly driver (ATM) it will driven till I find a house with a shed then it will come off the road and it will be striped to a shell (if that) and it will get a ground up rebuild with either a LS1 (and full drivetrain) or I will work my 327 that is in my dads shed and make the T.A an old school screamer.
Im leaning towards the LS1 tho because of the impresive power + fuel econamy over the large fuel bill of a HOT 327.
Oh well I have a lill while to make up my mind, This will be a 4 to 7 year project.

Heres the pics, They are a little old but ill update them soon:

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

I was looking at your pic for a while before I realized something was different. The A/C box and brake booster/master cylinder are on opposite sides. Then I realized you are in Australia. Do you have any interior shots? I would like to see some pics of a right hand drive interior.

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

LOL that Right-Hand drive is WIERD!!!! LOL Good looking car mate! The 327 and LS1 will get just about the same gas mileage. It all depends on how you set them up. The LS1 is probably already set up for Fuel Injection...but the 327 (Essentially the same block with a few differences) can be also. It's all what you want. Everyone has a LS1...but if you say this is my Trans Am with the 327...it'll make people scratch their heads for a moment anyway. Also, all things even, the 327 will have just about as much power as the LS1.

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

well the only way ill go with a LS1 is if a wrecked car comes up at a good price say $6,000AUD that way it will give me all updated running gear, Also then I can part the rest of the car out and get some of my money back

Sry the last pic is hell fuzzy, I took it with my phone camera and it is real sensitive to movement.

it would be shorter but i don't have the cash to just go out and get everything i need. I want this car to be perfict when im done.
Like better than new but it is going to take a while because my life is very bussy.

Id say more like 2 to 4 years now tho.

Just thought id give a little update, my car is now in pieces and im working on the wiring atm.
I have labeled everything that I have unpluged but I am not shure what some of the stuff is (a little blue box on the drivers side near the computer), Im going to take the OEM loom to pieces and salvage what I can but remove evereything I do not need.

Here is some pics:

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

I never saw under the hood of a right-hand drive 3rd gen before. very cool! I wonder if the original power bulge hood was reversed also. It probably wasn't, but it'd be interesting to see if it was. It's also interesting that someone replaced the stock bumper panels with what looks like smoked plexiglass.

Well they are actualy the alloy one way screen door mesh, It looked real good but had almost no airflow going through them so I had to scrap them.

The middle picture on this sight is the mesh.

I don't know what happend to the power bulge hood but I would of liked to have it.

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

Here is some pictures from my sight (www.84transamresto.blogspot.com) one is a shot 1 week before i started working on it and the second 2 are as it sits now.

There is abit of rust on the firewall that I will be removing and replacing, I will also reinforce the firewall with a frame behind it so it is stronger.

This may seem like a dumb question, but where is your firewall? I understand the need to move some things for the RHD conversion, but why such a big hole?

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

Yeah it has become a slow project because of cash flow atm.
I am removing the entire firewall soon because where it was converted to RHD back in 89 by "Specific Motors" (now out of business) they covered all there welds with a putty like filler to smooth it all out then painted over the lot but moister got under the putty and rusted the firewall to **** plus the drain area is completely shot. I need to make a complete new Wiperwell/Drain and Firewall up for the car. It has become a bigger project than i wanted but thats life, you never know what you got till you start looking for problems.

Here is a pic before i started cutting the firewall up, It looks better in the picture than it did in person but both bottom outer corners of the firewall were rusted through to the cab and there were 3 points at the top of the firewall that were rusted out 3 ways (engine bay, wiper well and cab) it was a messy hack job buy the converters.

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

Havent got any pictures in the last week but now most of the drain has been removed now and im going to start cutting, bending and welding in new 1.6mm sheet metal.
I will be taking pictures of all my work and keeping this page and my restoration sight updated as i go.

The wiper well i will be making will be nothing like the original one, it will start almost 1' from the (AUS) drivers side (1" back from the first opening under the windscreen) and draining out on the passenger side. Im not using the air/heater box so i will not need the opening for that letting me make the well alot more compact with just enough room for the wiper arms to move.

Re: My 1984 Trans-Am.

Very cool stuff. Ive always been a fan of the RHD conversion, looked very seemless, but obviously it was not well done.

If you are cutting up your car to such an extent, have you considered moving the engine and tranny BACK to get a better weight balance? I would say, youve already got your work cut out for you, but it would be really cool if someone did that, You would no doubt need a roll cage afterwards, but youd be alot quicker, and improve the handling a ton.

Especially if you go with the LS1. It already sits lower and further back, but if you could move it in some more, that would be wicked.

As well, while you have the car torn apart, i would use THIS moment, to start planning out long tube headers, and a TRUE dual exhaust. Especially if youre doing floor work.

Those gaps look like the driver door is sagging and not sitting all the way in the jam.

You don't need to do floorpan mods to fit true duals.

True, however, it wouldnt hurt the ground clearance if the floor WAS modded. I was actually referring more to the firewal area, because of the notorious problems with long tube headers.

if you look at the 23rd post, second picture just infront of the door you can see where the pannel has been harshly re-shaped to where it is meant to be.

60% of the cars that get imported over here are damaged and imported as "parts" to avoid import fees of a complete car but they have all the good replacement panels inside the cars so they can be rebuilt once over here.
