My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
Well thought I post some pics of my rebuild, Its a base 2.8 Camaro, with a 2.8. Why a 2.8, well about 10 years ago, I bought a camaro, with a 2.8, pulled it, and put a 350 in it. about two months later, the camaro burned to the ground and became a firebird. So back to the 2.8, well it was rebuilt, and was destined to be put into a chevette. It was fitted and everything, till my brother changed his mind, and found a 3800 supercharged SSEI. So now we have a 2.8 and tranny with no home.
Bought the car for 500 and well lt just started from there. Thought I do something Ive never done before, A body makeover, color change. Taking a red car, red interior, and changing it to bumble bee yellow, and black/grey interior.
These are just progress shots over the last few months, started the project on 15 june 2012
These are photos of the car before Hand
Progress Work as i Went
Donar Interior, I bought for 500.00 everything you see, what I wanted most was the ground effects and Driver side door
Replacement of the Rear Quarter panels

Great build log. Really diggin' the bucket seats with that 1970s retro feel. Far out! LOL. Seems you have done quite a bit of work on it already, and glad to see another 3rd Gen being saved. Kudos!
Great job on the engine bay, too. I am sure your car will look/drive great when you're done with it.
A tip, if I may. On your photobucket pics... you may want to copy the IMG code and paste it right in along with your posts. That way the big pic shows up which saves clicks for us lazy people. LOL.
Again, congrats on the build log and the car.

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
will do, I should edit and change those out.. the clickable link images..
As for as coats of yellow, I picked up a Gallon of Wheatland Yellow, GM
I Four coats of Primer, wet sanded to 600, One coat of Base Grey, that is part one of the yellow, Three coats of the Wheatland yellow.. Two coats of black for the stripes, then unmasked it all and put 4 coats of clear on..
I am unfamiliar with this Wheatland Yellow, and its supposed to be solid yellow, but even after 3 good coats, I can still see some of the grey base.. Its my first time painting and all.. At 750.oo a gallon, I am gonna live with this small flaw for now

As for he wing, just to be a little bit different.. I have 3 of the 3Pcs Spoilers sitting in my garage, but when I compared the two, I thought the firebird wing would suit the overall look a little bit better .. Thanks for the comments, hope to have the bumpers and Ground effects done in the next week, or so, and get more of full body shot going ...
Thanks for the comments..

Some more mock up photo's granted I'm not the best painter, had trouble spraying the clear still.. Primer, no problem, Paint easy, not a single run and minor minor orange peel.. 2K primer U-pol, never seemed to lay just right, always got heavy orange peel, Oh well Its my first time painting a car, and well its clear, just wet sand and polish it ..

Love the stock seats, and the new stripes, but I hate to see the wrong-year GFX, especially black under yellow.

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
Thanks, ya. this car is a hodge podge of just about every thing.... The Z28 T - Top that I got the interior from, and GFX from I could of gotten as well, but by then I had already restored the engine bay, and Replaced the rear quarters on this 85.. Between the Firebird Spoiler, the z28 ground effects, Iroc hood, the z28 rims, which are getting new tires on currently.. 225/60/15.. and the interior There is not much original on the car.

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
well the build goes on.. The 700r4 tranny that we used, was rebuilt 8 years ago, and well something is not right with it.. All new clutches and a stage two kit was put in, but once again, It blew the front main seal, and all the oil with it. Im sure the pump is pooched, but Im done fixing it.
So my brother when to the local U - Pick yard, and found a v6 T5 tranny. The stump puller kind with the 4.03 first .. Bonus, the guy had just installed a new clutch, but screwed up and got the throw out bearing jammed. Must of thought something else got screwed and junked the car LOL.. Got a new set of Ebrake cables, Rear brake shoes, Rear sway bar, to boot..
So the next couple days Ill be doing the auto to manual swap.
But given the 30 mins of road time I did get, the car handled nice, no knocks, kinks, dirty looks. Everything was tight and straight, given that I gave it a eyeball wheel alignment after the new struts went in.
well back to putting the camaro under the knife, so to speak.

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
Just thought I give a heads up, been a while as I parked the car all winter..
But I started work on the Sound system
Pioneer AVH-x8500BHS Double Din 7inch touchscreen deck
Pioneer GM-D9601 2400w mono amp
Pioneer GM-D8604 1200w 4 channel amp
Pioneer TS-A6985R 100w RMS (500 maz) 6x9's
Pioneer TS-A1305c 60w RMS 150max 5.25 Kick panel speakers
Infinty Kapa 429.9 4x6 60RMS 180max dash speakers.
Alpine SWS - 10D2 500RMS 1500max Subs times 2
Work involves a custom center console to fit the double Din deck, Custom sub box, amp location, and Kick panel speaker placement..
layout for Sub box placement, Note I cut the bottom of the rear kickpanels, off to allow placement of the amps, and sub box. Im going to box them in and fully enclose them.
The Modifed front kick panels with the 5.25 speakers installed
The modified Center console. Note I shoved the front angle part back 3 inches to allow more room for the radio, and in turn this added a small shelf on top for my Samsung S3 phone to sit, Also, I deleted the ash tray in doing so. This put the shifter closer to the radio but in no way impeds with the anything. Also, I keep the rear compartment, and In lengthing the center console by 3 inches, it allowed me to have room for two cup holders..
Finished product installed..
I try and get more pics of the amp, subwoofer box up later on in the week

The car looks great but with all the money you are putting into it even free I would not have used a V-6 .Do you have any plans for it. Turbo, boost,or what ?
Well if its stock than it has the nice 3.42 ratio but will need a posi. I guess I cant really talk, I put a lot of money into a 5.0.
Still its a beautiful job your doing.

Yea. V-6 was a gimmie motor.. It was rebuilt 8 years ago for a V6 Chevette project, but never got used. my current plans are to Turbo the motor and find a posi disc brake rear end. Reason for a turbo and not a 383 or bigger, well Ive never set up a turbo system, and what better way to learn than to do it. Car show season is upon us, so It will not happen till at least the fall. I also have a 1974 Internation pickup truck arriving in oct that may take some time and money, So far its plans are a full body restore, with a 2007+ Chevy frame engine swap.

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
Wing is from a firebird, dont remember the year.
Well this will be the last of the upgrades for this year.. I want to spend some time driving it. Still have a few bugs to work out, but minor ones. Cold start injector not working, Wiper motor has no delay, Signal switch does not turn off, muffler, sounds like a baffle is coming loose, sounds terrible. Would also like to do something with the front end, feels loose going down the road and I think it sits about 3 inches higher than it should, being a 2.8 non AC motor it is really light, compared to a 305/350 and the springs may be the wrong ones.
Sub box bottom, I did a closed sub box, with the sub's pointing down.. System sounds FANTASTIC..
And the sub box itself
The Amp locations with the sub box. Note I used the rear wheel well. I also cut out the lower portion of the rear kickpanels, and back kickpanels to get a clean look
This picture gives a clearer view of where I cut the quarter panels.. You can kinda see the amp is half covered, but with the vent in the panel, there is TONS of air flow even with the rear wheel well hatch cover down

Love the car man, looks really nice in yellow/black combo. What does pointing the subs down do? How does it differ from pointing up?

Re: My 85 Sport coupe complete top to bottom Rebuild
Best advice I could find and there is no clear decision is from a few websites saying ..
"While some will swear by a certain direction being best, neither down-firing nor front-firing subs have the clear advantage. Low range bass frequencies are omni-directional; meaning the direction in which the sub is fired doesn't truly matter. Some argue that air displacement is important as well, but there is no solid evidence to prove this. In other words, either one will suffice in most situations.
