My 86 Sport coupe project
So i bought my Camaro last July and have been working on it for almost a year. I just finished school, so up until now things have been coming along slowly, but still coming along. Ill post everything that has been done so far from day to day and continue to update as it comes along.
So here is where she sat for 3 years before i bought her back in July 2011:
Paid 500.00 for the car plus 200.00 for the 40 mile tow. Shes a 1986 Sport coupe with a 305 4 barrel, and 700r4. No power options.
The pickup:
Same day arriving at my house:
The best part is the car started that same night when i got it to my house. Threw in a new battery, gave her some pumps, and she started right up. Ran terrible and smoked from the valve seals, but that engine was going anyway. The car had very minimal rust, mostly cosmetic aside from the battery tray. The doors were rusted out the bottom, and there was a small patch in the bottom of the spare tire well, about 3 inches wide. Aside from that, the floor pans are solid along with the rest of the car. Ill post some more once i pull all the photos i have from my computer.

Re: My 86 Sport coupe project
The original plan was just to get the car running, so i can drive it around and work on it little by little. This is my first camaro, so i really wanted to drive it. I changed the plugs, wires, cap, and rad hoses, plus got the cooling fan running the way it should. The PO had the fan connected to a switch inside the car, so it wouldn't turn on by itself. I then removed the valve covers to change the gaskets, when i found lots and lots of sludge.
I decided to pull the heads and change the valve seals and clean everything up. Once everything was done she was running great.
All cleaned up:
Heres a video of her running and ready for the road, aside from the exhaust not being hooked up.

A little one wheel peel:

Anyway, a few weeks later before she got on the road, the engine started knocking.
At this point i decided to pull the motor and tear-down the car.

Re: My 86 Sport coupe project
if you ever want to sell the front and rear bumper, send me a PM... i noticed on another forum that you've put GFX and new bumpers around.

I actually decided to lose the GFX and go back to stock. It just didnt seem right putting ground fx on it. I decided to keep it original, as there aren't many sport coupes around here, plus it would be a great sleeper that way.

Re: My 86 Sport coupe project
So during the summer of last year i started the tear-down a month or two after i bought the car. Started with pulling the engine and trans.
I didn't have a hoist at the time so i stripped the 305 down to a short block, and slipped it out underneath between the k member and firewall.
Wiring all labeled, still coming apart:
Old 700r4 taken out:
:
305 All out:
I then addressed the rust in the engine bay. The lower radiator support had some, as well as the battery tray was completely rusted through. At the same time i started pulling apart the 700-r4 for a rebuild to handle the power of the new motor.

Re: My 86 Sport coupe project
Both accumulator springs in the trans were broken in half, but aside from that everything was good. During the time i would take it for test drives around the block, it shifted smoothly and didn't slip. The clutches had plently of meat left, and it actually seemed like it was rebuilt before.
I put it together with new Alto clutches and steels, as well as a trans go jr. shift kit, corvette servo, Kevlar band, and TCI sunshell and sprag.
I gave it a chevy orange paint job and brought it to school with me to throw on the trans dyno:
First attempt it had every gear except 4th. Took it apart and it turned out the pump seals on the 3-4 drum were bad, so after swapping the seals she had all 4 gears.
