Re: Flat Black Camaro

That area is 3 layers thick, so cutting 1 out does little to weaken it. I cut the 1 layer out & never touched it afterwards. Seen people cut all 3 layers out for more room & left it open.

Not mine, but identical except that I never put a patch piece back in & it has been "missing" for about 2 yrs now. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...od-17x11s.html

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Thank You! i plan on doing some of that today. see i can get these wheels to tuck, ive been thinking of making my own LCAs out of 1-1/2" solid steel rod. im going to look more into it but i think it would save space and be just as strong as the square tubing LCAs that i have seen.

If you can fab your own LCAs, that is great. I bought a set from UMI with the offset bushings to provide a little more clearance. http://www.umiperformance.com/catalo...roducts_id=107

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Thanks Agin Man, I completed the Mod as followed and heres what i ended up with. i was so happy i had to roll her outside, dust her off and take some pics lol. They tucked beautifuly, verry happy of my work on that. Remember the tires are like 13 1/2" Wide... im verry suprized they fit with no spacers. i plan on selling the old rims and tires for 300$ and with that ill buy the front tires for the 17s. So new pics soon hopefully.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Thanks Man! It took some doing but they fit and i can stick my hand between the tire and the well. If anyone atempts to do it i suggest a air hammer, i dont know how many times i almost dinged the fender. if you cant get a air hammer then just do it slow and take your time, and you DO have to cut out your bump stops theres no way arround it. i have 6" offset Aero wheels and they were like 75$ each.

Got the front tires and spacers, the 17s sure do make the rotor look small lol so i guess at some point ill be doing a upgrade. anyone have any good ideas? i plan on drag racing it so ill need some good stopping power.

Im also looking for metal interior pics, i want to cage it and have sheet metal where the interior plastics use to be. so far i havnt found anything.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Made some patch panels, the two battery box area panels will be modified to have a 4" 90* elbow in them facing forward to suck air for my dual 4" cold air. only about 1/2" will stick in the engine compartment the rest will be in the inner fender. ill paint the engine bay and pop rivet these in place afterward, i think it will give it a good mechanical look to match everything else.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Nice camaro.
The aero rims and the hoosier 3035s compliment the flat black nicely.
Quick question, i was planning on doing a rear end swap on my 92 camaro, and i was wondering if i could run a similar setup(i was thinking 15" basset rims with hooser 3035s or maybe goodyear eagles) with no modification if i swapped in a rearend out of a 4th gen like a 93-97 or 98-02 F body. Would i have clearance issues?
Where can i find those 3035s at?
Thanks

Re: Flat Black Camaro

SxyCamaro, A: On the rear end swap im not so sure, i believe ( from what ive heard ) it will only give you 2" more distance. now ive beat the crap out of mine and i noticed rolling the chassis ( no motor no trans ) to the shop to paint my tires still rubbed a bit BUT its deeper up higher then it is where the bump area is on my car so im hoping that after i add the weight it will be fine. if youre asking if you change nothing but the rear will it work... i doubt it, ive cut 2 layers on mine and beat it in, but i still think youll rub. it seems the " bulge " on these soft tires is whats mainly killing me in the fitment department. however once i add weight i can tell you more. THANKS on the comment i believe the aeros look great also BUT as ive put more thought into it and ive messed up lol. i have a buddy who runs asphault take offs at a dirt track, so the tires are free i dont know where he got them... i imagine alot of tire shops can order you a set... but as for me free tires turned out to not be as grand as ive found. i mentioned earlier of doing the brake swap to C5 vette type calipers. well ive cut my fronts and had the rotors milled down to just a hub and as im on my random brake thought train ive ran across the problem of free tires for 15" wheels or having the C5 Vette calipers with 12" rotors LOL i some how over looked making sure the rotors would fit i guess i got caught up in the moment of " free tires and cool wheels " so... thats where im at.

to catch you guys up on the build ive completed the engine bay its now gloss black, i custom built two panels for my dual cold air to attach to so it can suck air from out side of the engine bay. ive cleared all my aluminum parts for the motor and they have been mounted and the belt system has been test fitted ( but disassembled so i could paint the alternator ) so the engine is ALMOST complete and ready to fire. i need to still have the four middle holes on the intake drilled straight down so they will work for these heads. today we painted the springs, anti roll bars, alternator and hubs. im trying to replace all the steering rack with new moog parts but thats turned out costly lol so once i get the a-arms and struts back it ill just let the wheels rest without steering. ill post pics and feed you more info on whats being done.

Such an awesome lookng car and I want to paint my RS the same color. I'm going to use Summit Racing (hot rod black) My buddy did his 95 M3 clone in it a few months back and it looks great, is even holding up to winter just fine.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Lmancha96 - thank you verry much, hopefully as good as the idea i have in my head lol.

2007xl50 - Nice, i love seeing flat black fly around lol. i havnt heard any info on summit paint so couldnt lend you any tips there, but i hope it comes out as nice as your friends.

jk_under - Hmmm, ive painted them before at the shop and never heard anything. i know they powdercoat some and some come polished and chromed, id figure if any heat problems would come it would be on chrome... chrome seems to hold in heat. im not too worried about it, i dont plan to drive the car ALL the time or even long distances at a time. plus in the picture (to me) it makes the motor look unfinished.

Ive got the hubs on BUT had a issue. As i sucked the studs down it cracked my hub on every stud.... So i just stuck them on so i could atleast roll the car till i have 2 more hubs made. Heres some pictures of somewhat what the stance will look like, the rear will drop 2".

Re: Flat Black Camaro

I sent you a PM but I was asking you about power steering bracket with that Gilmer system as I have the same setup and brackets as you. I went with a March power steering bracket 2 piece setup with adjuster and I was just curious what you were running as I want to make sure I can still run my PS when I get the system installed.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

To Answer your question ( i did in PM ) but for anyone curious, i chose the Weiand Action Plus water pump... it offers a larger bearing and has twice the flow as a regular pump. The Gilmer belt drive puts alot of strain on the water pump and alternator what i plan to do is add a second adjuster to the rear of the alternator to help hold the rear of the alternator down. A common problem is people will over tighten these belts and even adjusted properly they want to pull the face of the alternator downward, " walking " the belt off. The alternator im using is stock thats been re spun to 180 amps, yea... a little much but i did it when i was running 4k watts of stereo and pushing upwards of 194Dbs. I dont plan to do that any longer BUT keeping the alternator wont hurt.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

I love my LS1 brakes but I think the advantage of being able to retain the stock steering stops with the C5 brakes is pretty significant. As it stands right now if I turn the wheel too far my spindle hits my caliper. I dont like that for several reasons.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Agreed, i researched before choosing for that reason. i wanted to see how big i could go and what the pros and cons were for all. i felt the C5s covered most of the basis id need and for price they are in the middle. Is there NO way you could build your own stops??

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Could you possibly list where you got the lower pulley bolts, water pump pulley bolts and or sizes? I have my Water pump bolts, timing cover bolts, accessory bracket bolts already. I am only missing the Lower pulley, and fan pulley bolts. Since we both have the exact setup as far as the brackets and gilmers goes, I figured you would know best. Thanks in advance.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Those are water pump pulley bolts, the main drive pulley bolts came in my kit they were also cap screw bolts grade 8 i believe, Kimball Midwest agin on the supplier the sales person here is waaaay cheaper then anyone ive found so far. i cant remember the size but all i did was take the stock bolt size, adjust for the thickness diffrence in the old pulleys vs the new and added the length. i got cap screws cause i think they look smoother and ive never seen any break, not saying they wont just saying i personally havnt seen it happen. Find a bolt rep, tell them what you have and what you want and if they are good they will do the rest... no worries.

sorry for the confusion lol

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Got my new crossmember and torque arm in and installed, i had to change my crossmember because i switched from the 700R4 to the TH350. UMI offered a bolt in replacement that i recomend, it was slow getting here but the product its self is built well.

I also ordered a blow through 650 Mighty Demon to fuel the power house, it should be here in a few days BUT ive gotta go out of town for work so when i get back ill have some more pictures. i decided to wait till the carb got here to finish the cold air, i had a brain storm that the 550 edelbrock i have just setting on my intake and the 650 demon i plan to use could be diffent heights so... best to wait, and i also plan to use ZEX black out perimeter nitrous plate but that should be easier to add the height in.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Bad *** man... I ordered the same cross member from them for a potential future 350 swap. I might order a torque arm from them, just not sure I want to shell out 300+ for a single part right now when I could toss that cash into more needed items on my particular build. Might I ask which model Torque Arm that is? I see they have non adjustable for 239 which is there cheapest. However I am not the type that will compromise on quality or options to save a couple bucks. Just looking for the tried and true parts and yours looks good and you didn't mention it being a hard install so I assume the parts are quality?

I finally have my motor and 700r4 bolted up, my biggest tasks now are getting it wired and running. Would love to see more of the car with the motor in it and stuff when you get a chance. Thanks for all the answers to my questions, I hate to bug ya but I feel mine and your builds are similar in parts so that's why I have been picking your head so much since your so far ahead of my build.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

No problem at all man, youll need to get the newer shorter adjustable design thats the one i went with. Yep everything was bolted in in-a-bout 45 mins with me being careful trying not to scratch it to **** while trying to install it by myself. if youre picky like me i suggest ask a buddy to help cause it was a pain holding it up by yourself, i also hooked up the side by the trans first and used a jack on the rear end to set the back side.

Theres a photobucket link at the verry start of the thread thats working all new progress and some photos i didnt put on here are in there, i have a few family members that keep checking it for progress lol.

i dont have a part number on the arm if thats what your needing man i bought it as a "kit" for 500$ on ebay, the only part that sucked was the 3-7 days you have to wait cause they really mean the 7 days it took about 2 weeks to get here. yes i understand they build them and all, its just a pain in the but so plan to wait and dont get in a hurry is my point on that.

Feel free to ask any questions you want, thats for anyone. No secrets here, i do have some 1 off things so far and id like to keep somethings BUT if asked ill share its not that important to me. if you have alot of questions and feel you need to email, send a private message and ill shoot my email and try my best to help.

Im also close to wiring and im not looking forward to it, im pretty good with wiring but this is a large task and im half thinking of ordering a painless LOL i probably wont because im the same way i dont like the shell out cash unless i have to. Ive done MOST of the upgrades myself, youll notice theres areas of the undercarriage not covered in sound deadener and thats cause i plan on building a set of SFCs soon.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

So I went back with my stock style PS pump... I have clearance enough in the back providing a put 2 spacers between the front adjustment bracket and the pump to keep the angle correct when tightening. The issue I am having is the PS pump will only adjust very little as the way these March brackets work is the end of the adjuster slot hits the center of the PS pump. It's a horrid design and I can't believe they would make it this way. I've tried it with 3 different style pumps, but for the most part there all the same around the shaft base housing and the adjuster bracket always hits about 1/4" movement up, effectively limiting adjusting belt tension to almost impossible.

Hopefully you don't run into this, figured I would share since I don't think you have mounted a pump yet. I wanted to let you know stock style will clear just fine with no issues between it and the block. I measured the distance around my crank pulley, to the 6" PS pump pulley. It is 30" exactly, which after adding the required Inch for belt thickness it comes to 31" at the lowest setting on the bracket. Mine only adjust to 31 1/2 max since I am limited with the bracket hitting housing. You should have the same as mine, unless you go with a different size PS pump pulley. I plan to test fit the belts I picked up tomorrow and I will let you know which fits the best, and tight to hopefully save you some headache if you have not crossed this off your install list yet.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

so i started mainly working on the dash to get it all kind of in place to make the wiring a bit easier so i dont end up doing it twice. Heres what i came up with, I tried to keep the same feel of the camaro interior yet with a drag car feel to it.

I finished the piping for the dual cold air and it made the car sound even better, I'll post a couple pictures and then a link to the youtube video. Hope you like it.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

Thanks jenks, its been fun to build and its slowly taking the shape of the picture I had in my head. My next upgrade will be a 9" rear, that should be not too far away I have about half the money saved I just havnt decided who I want to build it yet.

Re: Flat Black Camaro

I love that dash man. Did you build it around the dash or just use it to mock it up? I would love to do this in my build.

Wow that dash looks incredible. you did a raelly great job with it!

If you daily drive it and the glare gets to you, you can always plastidip it black, but I love how you preserved the factory look.
