Re: Rebirth of a 86 Iroc-z
Maaco gets a bad rap but if you do all the prep work your self including roughing up the primer and dissassemble some of the car and pay for the better maaco paint it actually comes out nice. then you just have to take car of it AKA wax it to protect it and what not and it will last and look great. The other thing to consider is that not all Maaco shops are the same, some have really good guys and some have crack heads. you gotta find one with a quaility group of guys
Also I know the thread I am going to link is a long build thread but look what this guy did for paint and look how nice it came out: http://www.njfboa.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57442

Look for a out of work painter that has access to a booth and will do your car on the side that will save you some bucks. Or just buy yourself a door and practice painting and garage shoot the car yourself.

Just tell the Manager that you would like to see some of thier work and maybe meet a couple of the guys to get a feel for them. If he says no than chances are his crew sucks and he doesn't want anyone to find out.

[quote=86_irocz-28;5304060]this is my first paint work.
Nice what did you use for paint?
24.95 a quart autozone duplicolor championship white and clear, a 34.95 syphone elcheapo paintgun and my 3.5hp compressor. The back was painted in my dirt driveway and the front bumper in my back yard. I had to rush the car since I moved and couldn't have it multi-colored at new residence. Good enough for a 20 foot car.
I still have to paint the hood and doors since they were white replacements and dont match this new white. Basically this duplicolor you just stir it good and filter it good and shoot no mixing required. How long it lasts who knows but I was just wanting a 20 foot paint job and matching. So it easily did that, perhaps with a garage and nicer paint and gun even a better job could be done. Yes this was my first attempt at painting anything. This has not been color sanded or buffed, the drip looking stuff is just water.

Like to thank everybody who followed this build and for all the help ive come to the point in time where there will not be any more updates as the car has been sold, fortunatly i know the people it went to and know it will be taking care of and can keep tabs on it as for the end of a thirdgener, i refuse and will have another exactly like it

That sucks man, I would have probably done the same thing.
Atleast it is with someone else and isnt sitting in a junkyard getting ready to be crushed.
I was just a little dumbfounded ( i think thats the right word lol) after reading the first two pages and seeing all that progress being made then getting to the last page excited to see more and then i read it was gone. It was kind of a sad moment for me
