Re: 58mark's restoration thread

it's called adhesive foam. It's double sided.

Auto body supply stores sell it in 20 yard rolls, but the guy there actually suggested I get the wal mart pack. 5 foot rolls, cheaper in the long run because you only buy what you need. Look for the stuff that says indoor/outdoor. Its the same stuff as the body shop version, one inch wide. Loctite also makes stuff that's even stronger in 3/4" width.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

Thanks - I will go pick some up. I have to gently remove my side moldings so they can be put back after I get the car painted.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

when i was working at a collision repair shop, wed always used 3m double sided molding tape. its the same stuff the moldings on a lot of new cars come with from the factory. you can get it at pretty much any auto supply store. we bought ours in i think 5 foot rolls from pepboys.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

looks that way...

I hoped to install my heritage stripes this weekend, but I ordered some rapid tac to help me install it, but it's not going to get here in time. (seller overcharged for shipping, and then chose a slower shipping method, I smell negative feedback coming his way)

I'm about to get out there and do a little more buffing. I need to buff the body side molding on the passenger side, and the mirror casing. Down to little stuff now

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

Sorry about the faulty shipping--a few individuals are less than honorable, I suppose. I probably won't make it to the Camaro Day, have some deadlines to make, but I've got to see your car and talk with you a bit sooner or later.
I don't know the names of various parts of trim, like along the tops of the doors, how to get them off and where to get new, and I've wanted to do that for years.
There's one car to paint before I do my Camaro, an old roadster with very little trim and a super straight body, good practice.

i think you mean the drip moldings... I'm not sure where to get them either. Painted mine on the car, then masked them off and painted the rest of the car.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

See--that's just what I need to know. But the job you did taking off the mirrors, door handles and locks--that's complete and I want to do it, too. I need about ten minutes of your time to point at things and ask questions.
Is Camaro Day something not to be missed? On the website it looked like a few cars set up with angel hair and mirrors--no?

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

yeah, some things are worth taking off, and others can be masked off easy, and they aren't worth it.

what website do you mean? I think the person that organizes it is with texas f-body association. her name is millie. I'll see if I can find you more info

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

travis401 would kick himself if he missed it--must be good. I looked up the schedule of the State Fair of Texas and looked at some photos from the '09 Day.
If there's a parking lot full of Camaros, owners to talk to like the meet in May, I'll drive the 300+ miles. If it's an indoor show with cars on display, nope.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

here's what I know..

you have to be there pretty early... like around 8 I think... to get in. you, your camaro, and anybody that is with you in the car gets in the fair for free

your car is parked in the "camaro corral"... a secure area that the camaro owners can get into, but the general public cannot. they can see in, but there is no touching, sitting, ect.

you commit to staying at the fair for the day, I don't think you can leave the corral until around 6pm

you have to be a paid member of either texas Fbody, or NTTGA to get an invitation. I think dues for texas fbody are $20. NTTGA dues are 30, but you get a t-shirt.

there will be more details soon. I'll start a thread here on TGO, when they are available, but in the meantime check out this thread

EDIT.. link isn't working... I'll find out why

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

tough call...For my first BC/CC job, I guess it's pretty good. I know if I was going to do the whole thing over again, I could do a much better job. There's lots of little flawsI know are there, but others might not ever notice.

If this was a show car, I would be thinking of spraying the whole thing over again. As a daily driver, it will be pretty darn sharp.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

thanks! It's not perfect by any means, but it will make a great driver that I'm not paranoid about taking out of the garage. some car are too nice to be a daily driver, and this cars has too many small warts on it

at least that's how I'm trying to justify not redoing the entire thing because it's not as nice as I thought it would be before I started....

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

the stripes were a total failure. On the back end, they did lay down over the back end of the spoiler correctly, and on the front, I couldn't get them to lay down without bubbles. I ended up removing them. on top of that, they weren't even cut correctly, so even if they had laid down, I still wouldn't be happy. What a waste of money.

I guess I'm going to get some Black single stage paint and try to paint them on. Not looking forward to painting again, but you do what you have to do.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

it was these, sold by ebay seller accusednormal

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1982-...item35a5bffa84

couple things wrong with them... the top paper they used was thick, inflexible, and had a lot of fiber in the paper. It made it next to impossible to tell if you got small bubbles out. The other issue was the angle of the stripes when they get near the edge of the hood was all wrong. In my opinion, the front edge of the stripe should match the dege of the hood, and on these stripes they did not. Also, the stripes were TOO LONG. by about 5 inches. Why have the pinstripe continue all the around the graphic if there is no way to mount it without it falling off the back edge of the hood? how strange.

I'm going to write a aftermarket review now... tell people to stay away

SCORE!

I picked up a factory 89 radio that had been modified with a MP3 input for $45. Just installed it. It looks and works perfect! I had a radio that was "close" but it was out of a different car, had chrome buttons on it, and no MP3 input. the new one is much better, and I think $45 is a steal

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

update... got the paint for the stripes in today... still haven't decided if I should use the plastic backing of the vinyl stripes as a template for heritage stripes, or just do something easier and custom. I'm painting them the weekend of oct 1st, so I have a couple of weeks to decide

one month to go before the state fair day!

I also put insurance back on the car today and took it out on the highway... man, I really missed driving it the last couple of months. Felt great

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

20 years ago I striped the shop owners truck where I had worked at the time, blue rallies, hood, grille, bumper, roof, tailgate, etc. He measured them as I was pulling the tape and told me I was 1/2" off center. Eyeball couldn't see it. I've done several since and none of them have been perfect. Good luck.

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

I bet you wish if he was going to measure, he would have done it before the paint went on!

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

I decided to go with the heritage stripes when I paint. Here's the basic outline, but the actual pinstripe tape will go inside this form

Now I just have to decide how much, if any, I'm going to round the bottom corners

That looks real good Mark! I like the slight rounding at the front of the car.

Mark--I'll be in your area in two weeks for the Goodguys event. Can I invite myself to drop by and look at your car?

Re: 58mark's restoration thread

Mard--Either later Saturday afternoon on our way back to Greenville after the show, or late Sunday morning on my way back to far West Texas. If both are inconvenient just say so.
