Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Which seats are those?
They look great.
Looks like you did a lot of work on the chassis, the interior, the engine, well, about the whole car actually!

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
The seats are the "Deluxe" seats optioned only in the Sport Coupe. The base seats were basic vinyl (which I would probably like more) and these deluxe ones have a one piece built in vinyl head rest, and sides, with cloth in the middle.
Pretty much nothing has been left untouched on this car... That is why it is taking so long.

Going to work on her this weekend... I really hope I get to take her home then, but it seems unlikely. 2 weeks is probably more realistic! Thanks everyone for following this thread, and answering my qs!

UPDATE:
Car will be home Tuesday or Wednesday... I just ordered up the last parts to finish her when I get to the shop. It is up to me to finish the wiring when I get there. I decided against the gigantic tach and instead ordered this which will fit in my triple gauge a pillar pod along with my water temp and oil pressure gauges. I then ordered a separate tube style shift light to go on the dash.

Nice man! Love the blue...
Still waiting on the car, but I got this in the mean time. Never thought I'd get a tattoo but heck why not. It is actually a lot smaller in person... I thought it'd be pretty cool with my arm resting on the window sill

Well guys, she is home as of yesterday! Put close to 600 miles on her already, and I am in love. The handling has improved incomparably... Power in the higher RPM range has skyrocketed... Simply put: I am in love. more to come soon!

Cruising through the fog. Pardon the sunpro gauges. They seem to work fine for now... The crappy cyberdyne tach actually works great though. Very useful and visible.

My friend Josh rolling out. Funny I have more pics/videos of my friends driving my car than me. It is the only way I can get good pics of my car though. A bribe of sorts.

When I bought the car there was no lower air dam installed. PO must have removed it. With the big summit fans and huge radiator the temp never goes over 195 no matter what. The fans kick on at 190 automatically. I was thinking maybe torque thrust IIs for wheels.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
I've reconsidered on the C5 wagon wheels - I think they'd look great with the right stance!
But if there's anything I've noticed about your car, is it can pull off nearly any wheels.
Im starting to think it's the sport coupes that can pull off so many different wheel types. They can do the really modern wheels or the really retro wheels. With the ground fx it seems like you have to put a lot of work into getting the right fender gap, wheel/sidewall ratio, offset, etc, a lot more. mw66nova's Sport coupe has had by my reckoning something like 2 dozen sets of wheels on it, and every one of them looked great on that car.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
I might give the c5 wheels a try. The car is a rocket ship now. Nothing against my original wheels except for the fact they were to skinny. I can spin the current irocs through second and chirp third and fourth now. Those wheels would be dangerous for me. Id love to send them to you but I traded them for the irocs. The kid took my 86 wrecked the paint and put a "*******" banner on his windshield and is driving on 3 of the said wheels and one pos wheel. Living the third gen stereotypes to the end that one.

Actually they are an older discontinued wheel from American Racing. Somewhat similar looking, but if you look close they are different.

Having way to much fun in this thing. Taking her to the track for the first time tomorrow! If I can pull anything under a 14 my first time out (ever) I will be a happy camper.

Yep love them Tyler. Took her to the track yesterday. Ton of pics to post. I ran high 14s my first two passes spinning like a ****. Put rear tire pressure down to 20 psi. Still spun but a lot less and ran a 14.2. I'd say 3/4 to 1 sec faster when I learn how to launch. The dragstrip feels entirely different than the street to say the least.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
I was originally told the motor was a gm performance crate motor with some extra goodies. But I looked up the numbers and the engine is an early 70s GM Target motor, made as a replacement for a mid 60s Corvette. In its stock form it was a 300 horse engine. Mine is .30 over, and has an aftermarket cam. Aside from that I can't tell you (which is why I am considering building a new engine) It was rebuilt less than 10k ago, and the inside is very clean and it runs great. Probably pushing 320-330 horse, my friends say on the butt dyno. Low 14 seconds isn't to bad I guess. However I am a pretty big fan of forced induction, so this car may be seeing a new low compression engine, big single turbo, and a T56.
Turbo Sport Coupe anyone?

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
I went back to my flat hood. Long story. 3 inch doesn't fit anymore. I'm not even sure a 2 inch will fit so I have to do some experiments to see. Im currently running a 1.5 and it leaves VERY little room between my carb and the filter lid.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Hey fellas...
Put the car away for the winter... Definitely a bittersweet last drive of the season. Over the coming months I plan to collect parts to take my suspension to the next level, as well as look into fuel injection and parts for my turbo build, as I already have a pair of single turbo exhaust manifolds. I may sell the engine I currently have instead of modifying it to take a good amount of boost. It is a rebuilt 70s GM target motor (300hp stock replacement for a 60s Corvette) and has about 12K on it since the said rebuild.
Some good news for those who may have liked my previous wheels...
The kid I sold my IROC to just had the car totaled by a drunk driver who hit it while it was parked (thank god) and got $2500 for a settlement (sold the car to him for $200 hehe) so earlier tonight he gave me the wheels back, which I think will look good with the new stance. The car has really settled into the sport lines since the pics on the last page, and looks great IMO.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Well I decided to rent a garage so I could work on the car all winter. It is half of my buddies shop where he works on Audi's all day. The next addition to the car will be the Powerjection III efi system and from there I will plan the rest of my build. My current headers already have an 02 bung welded on them, just need the hole drilled through.
I am going to focus heavily on lightening the car as well as keeping it as comfortable and usable as a daily driver.

I got the valve covers in rough shape at a swap meet. They could use a powdercoat rather than the paint which is flaking a bit now.

Btw I decided on the procharger for now due to the fact I have no need or desire to run high boost on an engine that can't take. Some day though...
Also for vortex... I got a 3" filter. I'd send the 2 incher to you for free if you could use it. It's a summit k&n style.

Got my moser axles installed, as well as UMI's take on the wonder bar. While I was at it, I replaced the torque arm bushing which was cracked and poly sway bar bushings (the GM NOS had cracked over the past month)
6 groove Serpentine setup is sitting in the back of the car waiting to be installed. I am going to powdercoat everything red before I install it, then I am onto my powerjection III install.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Thanks!
Last night I found a polished Holley 4160 600cfm at Autozone for $199. I have no idea why it was being sold for almost a hundred dollars less than summit, but I scooped it up just to try before I commit to my powerjection. Got it installed and WOW what a difference. MUCH better throttle response and low end, as well as more high end kick... I had to adjust the choke a bit, as the cam actuating it allowed it to choke on occasion. It made me worried on the first test run, but once it was sorted the car tore it up.

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Well I need advice. Last night I pulled apart my rear end to fix a shim issue (excessive gear lash) and after it was altogether my buddy and I sealed it up and it drove much smoother. Bout 30 minutes into the drive my buddy asks if he remembers if I saw him put the fill plug back in. We pull over sure enough it is missing. We were close to home so got it back. I didn't notice any noises or irregularities but a lot if oil was lost. Do you think I caused major damage? Or would I have noticed? I'm going to pull the cover tonight and check.

I dont think their would be any problems, unless you were burning out all over the place. Only problem would be forgetting to put the plug on again.....

Re: 68Strat's 83 Sport Coupe build up
Rear end is fine. Thanks for the piece of mind Karl!
Had fun yesterday, meeting another member from the board with his 83 Firebird.
Still have to rip the damn flacid fogs out lol!
I am also pleased to report with the Holley carb I picked up 8-10mpg all around over the Edelbrock, and get 22mpg about dead on, while cruising at or a little under 65!
I also bought new Pioneer speakers for the front, and a nice set of Kenwood speakers for the rear... She really pumps!
Tomorrow I am retouching my center console, as well as adding some custom (classy) interior trim for my AF ratio gauge (+ two other cutouts for future use) and a switch to set my rev limiter. I set it today at 5400 RPM... Sounds very cool bouncing off the limit, but that is not something I plan to do often! My car makes great power between the 3250-4400 rpm range.
