New member/new 85 iroc z
Hey guys,
This is my first post here, but have been lurking around for a few weeks.
I just bought a pretty much all original 85 iroc 305 tpi/auto car a few weeks ago with 84k original miles. The car also has 3.42 gears/limited slip and 4 wheel disc brakes. I didnt know you could get rear disc's on these cars? I will be starting the engine swap here in the next month or so also. I'm putting in a 383 that I built last year for my '86 monte carlo ss that i'm going lsx with. Also I will be installing a t56 that was also in my monte in this car. Any info on swapping the t56 into one of these cars will also be greatly appreciated!

Nice IROC and I really like the engine you're going to put in it.

Welcome to THIRD GEN, with a nice car that you have. From the looks of the 383 you shouldn't have too many problems with the swap. I have never personally done it, but there are plenty on here that have. Ask as many questions on post as you need to. You can never have too much information. Good Luck

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
Thanks every one! one thing I would like to do is use the tpi cold air intake with the carb setup. does any one on here run some sort of carb hat with piping to the original intake?

Nice car. You should really consider keeping the car fuel injected with the new motor, a nice Holley Stealth Ram or mini ram setup would be nice, a lot better than a carb setup. I hate carbs... especially when people go backwards from fuel injection to carb
Nevertheless, it's a really clean car, and I'm sure it will scoot when you're done.

I would like to put a stealth ram on this motor, but funds don't allow it. Plus it already has a pretty expensive carb. The carb doesnt miss a beat and this combo got over 20 mpg in my monte.

Very nice looking Iroc. You're new drivetrain will really wake it up. You should donate your motor/tranny/wiring that you're taking out to my 91'Z

I have an 86 monte carlo ss I'm doing a frame off resto on right now that was my parents car, thats why I got this car so I would have a play toy while thats apart. This car is amazingly solid, no rust ANYWHERE. Thats also the original paint.

It's a very nice car indeed! The 383 looks great as well!
However, I'm going to have to go with keeping this car original as well. There is thousands of crappy third gens in need of some help, and not very many nice ones like this out there. You might as well just grab a crappy RS or something and swap the motor and tranny in.

Even though the car is original, is it really worth anything? Its got the original paint and looks decent but theres a few small dings and some rock chips. I traded my 95 lt1 z28 vert for this car also, heres a pic of it.

As of right now, not worth a whole ton. Keep it nice and original till about 2025 or 2030 and you'll have a good chunk of change sitting in your garage.

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
No thanks, I'm not going to keep this original for 20 years, but I see what your saying. The reason this car appealed to me is it has absolutely no rot so I can just do the mechanical stuff to it and make it fast, no messing with body work or interior. I have 6 vehicles and dont need another complete resto on my list. This thing is just to slow right now, My duramax is faster then it! I'm going to start out with carb at this point but wouldnt mind going stealth ram. What would I need? Obviously the manifold and a throttle body. fuel rails, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, distributor? different computer? Is there anything else? Also the cam in this 383 is a custom ground cam with a 107 lsa. Can that work with the efi?

If your not going to keep it all original at this time, at least keep all the original parts, so that when you "get on in age", and you decide that you want to restore it back to all original, you'll at least have all the parts to do it with!!
P.S. If you don't mind me asking, what was the previous owner's asking price, for the 85 IROC?

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
$4500.00 ball park, I'd say it's a good price being that it's pretty low mileage, and all original!!
However, a car or anything that's for sale by someone, is only worth what someone will pay for it!!
So, If you paid say $4500.00 for the car, and you wanted to sell it, but nobody would buy it from you for that price, to you it's worth $4500.00 but to any body else it's not!!
Bottom line, from what I can see about your car, I'd pay $4500.00 for it!!
P.S. Do you have an engine bay picture that you could post??

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
Honestly the paint is ok. Like I said the car has absolutely no rot, BUT there are some stone chips and a few small dings in it. Still not too bad for almost 26 year old original paint. If I keep the car next year it will get repainted and factory decals redone.

Hello Onebadbowtie86!!
Beautiful, just beautiful!!!! $4500.00 not bad at all, from what I can see!!
The vice grip holding the hood up has to go!!!
P.S. I'd have a hard time with pulling the "heart" of the car out, and replacing it with a new more powerful one............but that's just my passion for the "originallity" speaking!!
If it was "TBI", no problem, "TPI", "Houston, we have a problem"!!

I picked up on something that you said above, "If I keep the car next year it will get painted and factory decals redone"
A change of heart, perhaps?
If there is any doubt about keeping it for any length of time, I wouldn't change a thing (engine/transmission), but rather keep it as is, and fix the few "flaws" (overflow bottle/hood supports/missing badge on the back bumper/etc) that it has!!

Don't keep it original. You will have way more fun with that swap than you will ever with the stock 305. I wouldnever buy a car to keep it stock unless its a ddd and even then my familys 94 gmc jimmy is getting a 5.3 swap after my 92 gets its lt1 swap done.

Original Stock or Modified, that is the question!!!
The answer is.........do what you want, it's your car!!!
Just keep all the original parts!!!!
Trust me on that one!!!

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
Well for now I am going to fix the few flaws with the car and charge the A/C and put new window sweeps in it. I have the 383 and t56 if I decide to put it in but I'm not too worried about it right now. I'm more concerned with getting the tub for my monte painted and back on the frame this winter. Either way the Iroc will be on the road this summer!

Re: New member/new 85 iroc z
Is it true that these 85 iroc's were 215 hp? and that the 86/87 irocs were only 190? Is that the "peanut cam"? I guess I was under the impression this one was lower hp because it didnt have a roller cam. when did the roller cams start?

Car is for sale!
$4,250 obo
Car needs a few little parts that need replaced due to age, like the coolant bottle, turn signal indicator and will need tires soon. But the car is low mileage and original. Except for the headliner sagging the interior is beautiful and everything works. A/c also needs charged. unmolested original car with less then 85k miles.

Traverse city Michigan. I hate to sell it as I will probably never find another one this clean up here. I have other projects that need funding though.

I know that all too well...I have a life long friend from the Navy that works at the Sara Lee plant up there. He has been trying to get me to come up there for the last 30 years...I hope to make the trip soon...I hear its beautiful up there. Click on my signature to read about my 85 Z28. Maybe you could have a change of heart about selling it.
