Engine Trouble (Backfire through Exhaust)

I have a 91 Camaro RS with a custom 350 bored .60 over. I had the car in storage for 4 years. I had a huge problem with overheating so I installed a 3" dual core rad from BeCool. I then managed to get the motor to start by finding TDC marking the base of my distributor (Mallory HEI) to line up with #1 cyclinder. I then set the timing by rotating the crank by hand at 12 degrees advance. I adjusted the idle screw on the carb (Holley 4150 650 double pumper with recent Holley renew kit) the motor idles just under 1000rpm. Both air fuel screws are turned out 2.5 times. Fuel pressure is at 8psi.

The problem I am having is when I press the gas pedal the engine sputters a bit revs good to 2000rpm then once i let off it backfires a 1ft flame out of the exhaust. The car is on jack stands right now so there is not much load on the motor. Also this was orriginally built as a race motor so there is no vaccume advance or choke. I also have to have the distributor cap turned all the way to the right (fully retarded) to the point where the vaccume cannister is hitting the intake. The motor smells like it is running ritch (eyes actually burn when standing near motor) and my plugs are black.

Please any help appreciated!!! If this is a timing issue what should my timing be set at I have my cam specs and can post if needed. Thanks to all who reply.

Re: Engine Trouble (Backfire through Exhaust)

if ur distributor vaccume cannister is hitting ur intake to get it to run good i would pull it out and turn the rotor on the distributor and few teeth back it could be off.

Sounds good I will give that I try when I am done my tour. The car ran fine (less a leaking carb) before going into storeage and I have never pulled the distributor. Do you think I can take the Vac Can off with out causing more problems.

Re: Engine Trouble (Backfire through Exhaust)

Thanks for letting me know. I was going through some old bills from motion performance and one said that my initial timing has to be set a 30 degrees advance is that not too much that would put my total timing at 42 degrees? Here are my exact cam specs if this helps.

Cam-115804

Cam Valve Lift intake= 485 exhaust= 485
Duration at .050 intake= 254 exhaust= 254
SAE Duration intake= 294 exhaust= 294
Lobe Center intake= 110 exhaust= 118

Anyone running a similar cam?? Any help appreciated

Re: Engine Trouble (Backfire through Exhaust)

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me I think I maybe closer to solving my problem. I took the distributor apart and found that at some point the mechanical advance had been locked out (welded on both sides) so I am going have to set my initial timing at 32 degrees. Does this sound right? I wish someone would have taken the time to tell me this, if this is what they did when built the motor for me.
