The 89 Father & Son Project

I just bought my son a 89 RS. Will be bringing it home on Saturday.
I currently also own a 99 Z28, I have owned a 68 RS and a 89 IROC before.

We will be redoing the car together. We plan on doing a V8 Swap, custom gauge package, new interior and paint, suspension, brakes etc........

Here are some pics of the way it sits.

I notice it has a 91-92 Z28 Hood, spoiler mounted brake light and Z28 grill.

That looks like it would be a pretty nice project, and father and son ones are always fun!

Send those hood blisters my way if you decide to get rid of them

Re: New Project

We trailered it home from Omaha today. Powerwashed it and began the removal of the interior. I found the expected rust in the spare tire well.

Put in a battery and all the lights, fans etc... work. The 2.8L does not turn over. But that is coming out anyway

Tomorrow we will finish removing the interior.

Here is my son and his Camaro at a gas station on the way home from Omaha.

Re: New Project

I went down to the shop and removed the rear interior and carpet. I was pleased to see no other rust problems besides the spare tire well

Going to tackle the rest of the interior as soon as my son wakes up

I am going to buy him some 4th Gen seats for the Camaro also. Car was sitting for a while and spme little friends made a home of her for awhile. New carpet and we are going to replace the jute backing on the panels and body.

That big rust hole looks almost identical to the on in my Trans Am. Let me know how you plan to fix it.
The seats also look nice, I just put a set in my Camaro and they look great in it.

We found it in Omaha, NE It was last on the road in 2000. Been sitting for awhile.

I subtracted the $9.60 because that is how much change we found in the car when removing the interior

Yes it is gumnetal gray and will be repainted that color.

Did you find a buildsheet after removing the carpet? I found my trim/accessory sheet after lifting the carpet in the trunk to check for rust. (found ZERO)

Any plans for suspension/chassis mods? definitely some subframe connectors

We found what was left of one stuck to the trunk floor

Going to rebuild the front steering, subframe connectors, better shocks and struts. Maybe lower it.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project

July 5 Morning worked on it from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM

2.8L Disassembly- preparing for pulling.

Removed the Alternator, Air Ducting, Upper Intake and Fuel Rail, A/C Compressor and Power Steering Pump. Going to have to remove the Pulley from the PS pump to get off the bracket.

We removed a Valve cover just to see why the engine was not working. This is what we found.

Anybody who lives close and wants free 2.8L parts, you can have them.

We are going to save the PS pump and A/C Compressor as they can be used on the V8. Even if they end up not working it is nice to have a core.

This afternoon we cleaned up the console and stored it. We need to find a new lid, rear ahstray and the front ashtray is missing the inside. The current lid is missing the arm and the cover is starting to come off.

More stuff to look for

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project

Console was disassembled for removal, cleaned and reassembled for storage and restoration.

We need two trim screws and a new lid. Old lid had a broken latch and the cover was beginning to come apart.

I also have to figure out a way to preserve the RPO tag.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project

Thanks, I checked and nothing. I found out that 84-90 Camaros had the sticker in the Console and 91-92 in the rear compartment.

We just got done cutting the exhaust off. Now getting ready to loosen up the tranny.

Wow he's going to be a lucky boy. My parents won't let me put a 350 in mine until I could afford the insurance...

Hahaha that sucks man! My only requirement was to buy a car with Air Bags! My 91 has airbags so I am good
Than 6 months later I ended up buying a 89 Convertible, no airbags or rollbar!
Luckily both has 350 in them too

Well airbags don't matter to them since my first car I drove was their 1989 Chevy truck that had none. That truck has a 350, but it's also a truck lol.

Sorry if this has been asked, but are you trying to go original with this build?
