Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Not the original drivetrain, my son want's it to look like a Z28. We plan on painting it the Gunmetal Metallic it was originally. Our insurance company only asks for the VIN so to them it is a 6 cylinder

Nice man! Have fun with it
I just got an 88 Trans am with all the GTA options for my birthday
It sat for 10 years and still runs really good!
its in perfect condition
all it needs is a new exhaust, surprisingly
Me and my dad are gonna restore my car too
its been kinda stressful, but you and your son seem to be having a great time
Hope all goes well

While waiting for the PB Blaster to work on the torque arm bolts on the tranny, I removed the passenger side ground effects and found no rust under it

Well going to have to go get a 1/2" drive 15mm Socket. The 3/8's is not going to do the job on the torque arm. If I could get the impact in there

So the day was not a total waste, we removed some of the ground effects, the spoiler and the taillights.
Going to go get the sockets and the new rear hatch shocks tonight.

Good luck with the car. I hope your son stays motivated. My father/son project eventually evolved into a father project.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
We put some heat on the torque arm nits and we got it right off, We then pulled the motor and transmission as a unit.
Now we are going to rebuild the suspension and steering linkage. While also looking for a V8 700R4.
Here are some pics of todays progress.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Sunday we began the restoration of the front passenger side Brakes and Suspension.
Getting the Rotor turned, Bought a new caliper, pads, strut, ball joint, A Arm bushings and Brake hose.
We bead blasted the brake backing plate. We are also going to blast the spindle and A Arm when they are off.
While it is disassembled we are going to clean up the wheel well area.
We are also going to be replacing the spring with a V8 one.

You're doing quite a bit in a small amount of time. Do you plan on cleaning up the engine bay while you have the motor out? I know I would, I'd to throw a shiny motor in there and see all that rust

The new springs showed up today. Also the package from Thirdgenranch.com arrived.
A nice condition Charcoal rear carpet, some trim pieces for the rear struts and the dash Z28 emblem.
So this weekend we can tear down the right front corner and start the rebuild process.

Nice project, and progress!
Why are you going to get the old rotors turned? Brand new stock replacement rotors are only $26 from Autozone, and don't require a core. Just wondering.

Today after work we removed the Caliper, Spring, Strut, and Upper strut mount. This weekend the A-Arm comes off and the wheel well will be attended to before reassembly.
Here is the wheel well after today's work.
The Upper Strut mount, strut bolts and brake hose bracket after removal
The same parts after bead blasting, primer and paint.
The Spindle awaits its turn
Gavin's first purchase for his car.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Today we got the Lower Control Arm back with the new bushings and Ball Joint intstalled. We applied some POR-15 to it as it had been beadblasted.
We also applied some POR-15 to areas in the wheel well for extra protection. After it dried, we then applied some 3M Undercoating, and then reinstalled the upper strut mount.
We also removed the V6 Motor mount. After we bead blast and paint the Bolt heads and nuts, we will install the new V8 mount before reinstalling the lower control arm.
Btw does anybody off hand know the length of the brake line from the valve to the passenger side brake hose in the front? If not we are going to bend the V6 one to the V8 mounting holes and use that as a measurement for making a new one. We would like to have one in there that is the correct length.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Went and blasted the Brake hose bracket and the nuts and bolts for the engine mount.
Checked into building a new brake line and we would need the bubble flare adapters. So we are going to carefully bend the V6 line to fit into the V8 line area. I do not like the idea of having more areas of possible leaking down the road.

Installed the new spring, New Strut, lower control arm, spindle and brake backing plate today. We also installed the new V8 motor mount.
Waiting on the brake hose as it was boxed wrong. Then we pack the wheel bearings, install the seal and assemble the brakes.

Great progress, keep at it!
My son was 15 when I started redoing my 92 and helped along the way. It was an awesome and rewarding time and paid off for him last Sunday when I gave it to him for his 18th Birthday.
Have fun!

Today we finished up the passenger front.
We packed the bearings, replaced the seal, installed the rotor and new caliper, pads and hose. We will crimp the outboard pad as soon as we finish the drivers side and reinstall the brake line to the passenger side.
Now to push her out of the shop, clean up the shop and prepare for the drivers side
Here is the finished product.
Here is the new no engine or tranny stance.

Worked on her today for about 90 minutes.
We replaced the old worn out hatch struts. Found them for $29.99 ea at O'Reillys.
Before with a prop.
After without a prop.
The drivers side front. Not as bad as the passenger side was.
Progress so far.

Great work so far guys! This is really good idea for anyone to do with their kids, my dad and I bought a 79 malibu for $800 rust free about 9 years ago when I was 13. We worked on the car and got it all done by the time I was 16, It really made me appreciate the time and work we put into it and not to ever tear it up.

Thanks for the tips and comments.
We have decided to go with a Turbo 350, a new driveshaft, a 355 CI Motor and a 3.42 Posi.
We have the Tranny and Engine, going to rebuild the tranny and add a stall. The Machine shop is going to do the motor.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Today we removed the Spindle, Strut and Spring. The old V6 Spring was broken at the bottom.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
I did a 95 Z28. My son would help a little until momma let slip that it was really his car and not my toy. Junior all of a sudden was underneath with me all the time. He's been driving it for over a year and takes great care of it. It makes for a great time together and he actually appreciates the car because he literally has skin in the game.
We're heading to look at an 89 with a 350 on Saturday and that will be my toy and project.

Re: The 89 Father & Son Project
Great project. My 14 year old son bought an 88 Sport Coupe last year before he had his license. We have been working on it since. Just a v6 with t-tops, no other options, but its straight and no rust. Runs good and looks pretty good. He thinks it's really cool because no one else at school has one. You are pretty close to us. We are in Fargo ND. Keep it up!
