hello all-updated 11/27/11

what's up everyone. just wanting to introduce myself. i didn't see a introduction section so since i have a pic or two i am posting here. i just recently got a hold of a 86 camaro v6 automatic.

this is my first camaro but i always have loved these third gen bodies. i have been a mustang guy for just about a year now(i know some of you hate me already) but i was looking for one of these camaros when i got my 96 mustang last year. i have done some stuff to it and enjoy modding and can't wait to start working on my camaro. on the mustang i put on the exhaust myself, cold air intake, reverse glow gauges, and me and my stepdad painted it and tinted the tail lights. still needs some wet sanding and buffing.

i can't wait to get some stuff done to the camaro. we went and got a rear bumper cover and a door but i cant decide if i want the rounded iroc ground skirting or the straighter z28 style. what do ya'll think. i see more iroc than z28 so i am leaning toward the z28 skirts. the motor knocks and was in the middle of being removed at the scrap yard when we picked it up. we paid .08$ per pound for it. we have a v8 motor that we are getting pulled out of a vehicle at the same scrap yard so it will not keep the 6er. thinking all black or solid white with dark windows and maybe some light tinting on the tails and headlights. my stepdad is a paint and body guy so i am not worried about the outside, it will be taken care of in time. the inside is in really good shape. no fading or ripping except for the elbow rest and the headliner which are easy fixes.
any of you have suggestions or some insight on this year just let me know like i said this is my first camaro so its all new to me

going to be black inside and out. still need to find some more ground effects. then we will be starting the body work. hoping to put a 350 in it and put a carb on it. its a slow process but it will be worth the wait i think. car isnt at my place so it's kinda hard to get out and work on it when it is dark by 6:00 everyday.

so rs and z28 were the straight grounds and the iroc were the curvy ones with the opening in them? what is the difference between the 91-92. just asking because i still need to pick up the sides and i don't want to get stuff that won't go together.

thanks, it's comming slowly but one day i will have a bad a** camaro. like i said before i want to put a 350 in there. one thing i was wandering is the origianl i guess berlinetta bumper had the two vents where the air was pulled into the air boxes. the later rs's did not. should i be leaving the other bumper cover on there or will it not matter since it should be carbed.

Sweet Project. But I can tell you now the car is deffinatly a 87, not a 86.

Next thing, you both got it confused. There is 3 different 3rd gen Camaro ground effects. 1. 82-84 z28. its the shortest, and the front piece has slot vents in the botum. 2.85-90 gfx (used on all irocs, z28s, and rs's 85-90. 3. 91-92 style used on ALL 91-92 Camaros. And had the lip that faces out (witch is the style you are putting on you car) also called the "aero" style, the front piece and the side skerts have 'scoops' on the sides. If you are still confused, ill post pics.

Re: hello all-newbie here

thanks for the info. so when i go get the side ground effects from the yard i need to get it from a 91-92 since that is what i am starting with in the back. what is the reason you are saying it is a 87 and not 86. im not saying your wrong. it very well could be a 87, i didn't really look at the sticker to see.

Actually...I don't. Didn't mention the 82-84 as they are totally different than later years.

Also, the RS first appeared in 1989. Berlietta was 85-86 and a sport coupe was offered in 85-88.

The base models and berlinetta's had slots in the bumper cover (nose), while the Z28 and IROC had a solid front....solid nose cover is a direct replacement.

The 89-92 RS models looked exactly like the IROC and Z28 from the outside (same nose and gfx).

The RS, berlinetta and sport coupe hoods were all flat. The IROC and Z28 hoods from 85 onwards had hood blisters (91-92) and louvers (85-90).

Check VIN - tenth digit is H = 1987 if G = 1986

Here is a shot of my 89 with 91 gfx.

yes i looked at the sticker while i was out there working on it today. manufacture date is 12/86 which would make it an 87. the scrap yard we got it from told us it was an 86 so that is what i was going by.

went out today and did a little bit more to it. finished transfering the headlight assymbly and replaced the busted chin with a whole one and slapped it up front.

had to change the lock and transfer my door panel. need to move the door front just a hair still. it closes but kinda hangs up and it looks like the gap is not big enough in the back.

what? you dont make sence? you JUST said The 89-92 RS models looked exactly like the IROC and Z28 from the outside (same nose and gfx). So your saying 89-92 RS models have the same gfx? But then you post a pic of your 89 rs but you say it has 91 gfx? huh? I wasnt even talking about belinettas and sport coupes, I was talking about differnt gfx styles, witch berlinettas and sport coupes didnt even have. 82-84 ARE ALL THE SAME GFX,85-90 HAVE ALL THE SAME GFX, and 91-92 HAVE ALL THE SAME GFX. A 1989 RS Doesnt have the same gfx as a 91 or 92. I still stand correct. Im confused on what you are trying to prove me wrong on.

I knew it wasnt a 86 by the seat pattern, wheels, shift ****, door panels, and no high third break light.

Yes if you want to go with what your using on the back bumper that is 91-92 gfx. The front nose you got will work, but the lower piece is not. it needs to look like the blue car posed above.

His camaro is an 89 camaro. But he put on a set of 91-92 GFX. His car originally came with the 85-90 gfx. he just switched them out.

Hope it makes sense.

I know that. But if you look at his first post he says 89-91 uses the same gfx.

I just reread his post and it doesnt say that. UNless your talking about the hoods for the IROC and Z28. If so, he means that the iroc and z28 hoods from 85-90 had louvers and the hoods from 91-92 had the blisters.

Re: hello all-newbie here

Oh,he doesnt meant hat the gfx are the same for each year, he means they are the same for each model. The gfx in 89 were the same for rs, and z28, and iroc. And the gfx from 91-92 were the same across the models also.

Re: hello all-newbie here

so other than that i am slowly making progress. i about have it all broke down. still looking for a cam that i can just put in there without having to do new rockers. now might be looking for new block though. heads are 14102193 which from what i have came up with searching, they are crap heads. anyone know much about them? is the edelbrock performer intake useless with these heads? this motor might turn out to be a total waste of money it seems. but here are some shots of the work

Yeah, I see that now. Now it looks like a crack.

I have seen blocks with similar looking casting marks, but certainly not on a mounting-surface.

Block is trash, that sucks.

Re: hello all-newbie here

that fu**ing suuuucks. guess it is better than putting it in the car without looking at it closely. it did have a very small bit of water in the oil but no oil in the water when we pulled it. it was running so we were hoping it would be the head gasket or worse case the heads which would have given me a good excuse to get some vortechs. guess i am searching craigslist for the next few weeks. anyone got one in my area cheap let me know.

Re: hello all-newbie here

well, got ahold of another 350 and i got a great deal on it. came out of a 80's chevy car i didn't pay too much attention to what it was. it is a 3970010 4bolt. it looks like it is in great shape. tore it down and no cracks that are visible. the oil was clean in this one(no water). painted my edelbrock(it fits, yeah) intake and the block this weekend. going to remove the head gasket junk on the heads and check it for warp. if it's good then i am probably going to do new springs and valve seals on it and clean them the best i can. going to use the 193 heads instead of the 601 heads that were on there. lots of crap under the 601 heads looks like the valves weren't sealing good. don't know if it is just the seals or the actual valves. the 193's looked a lot better under them. here is the block and intake. when i get done fooling with the heads they are getting the same gloss black. going to put some chrome or stainless valve covers, water neck, air cleaner, and maybe some other stuff. trying to keep it all black and chrome. maybe some blue wires and couple of blue aluminum connectors here and there. it already has a chrome timing cover so i don't know if it is the stock cam. someone pulled it and did some painting and gasket work on it before i got a hold of it.

Good to see you found another block to use. Are you going to freshen up the short block, or just rework the heads?

Re: hello all-updated 1/3/11

well damn. i cant believe it is taking me this long. but when my stuff is 45 minutes away and i am working so much and trying to hold a family together i guess there just isn't much time. i did manage to get out and work on it some more. basically i was planning on looking at the bearings and making a decision on slapping it together or replacing some of the bottom half. there was plenty of copper color to the bearings so i guess i am going to the parts store again. i thought i was actually going to be working on putting her back together this weekend but instead found i am going almost all the way with a full self rebuild. i have a new 25% increased volume oil pump and all the gaskets. i took the old cam out and put the one i picked up on the sprocket. guy used it for a few months and went with a bigger one so i got it cheap.

then i broke down the rest of it and it is ready for new bearings which i hope to pick up this week. also cleaned out the cylinder walls

i got some new valve stem seals and broke the heads completely down. used a dremel and a soft wire brush attatchment. cleaned every bit of carbon off the valve stems and stem walls. cleaned out what i could reach on the ports. put fresh valve seals and put them back together. painted them black and now they are all ready to put on once i get the bottom half back together. i am using the heads off the first block since they are newer. would like to buy some vortecs but it is taking me long enough on the budget i am on so i think the heads i have will work for now.

Re: hello all-newbie here

Looks like a full-on rebuild now, lol. Well as long as it's done right, your taking alot of guesswork out of using an old engine with miles on it. Good to see your moving forward on your project. Keep us updated!

Re: hello all-updated 10/18/10

FINALLY started putting it back together today. started cleaning the pistons with a hand brush. got two done and screw that. i am gonna get something to put on the end of a drill for the rest. going with new bearings and rings. first two down six more to go. i think i have everything i need. except for plugs and wires. i will pick them up soon. here is where i left it today. going to clean the rest of the pistons this week at home and bring them out next weekend. hopefully i will have all the pistons in and can put the heads and cam in. going to pick up a set of chrome valve covers and air cleaner when i get most of it together. looking for a chrome alternator bracket. picked one up from autozone and it didn't match the one i took off so i had to return it. if i can't find one all the brackets and pulleys will be black to match the engine.

Firstly, welcome to TGO, looks like a good project you have

and i just have a little info on the 0010 block

the 0010 block is a high nickel block. it was either 2 or 4 bolt main and was used in 327, 350, and 400 engines. it is arguably one of the strongest block castings GM ever used. the 350 and 400 variations are found mostly in trucks....and 0010 is actually a 70's era block, not 80's

Re: hello all-updated 11-27-2011

ok, well this is a long time coming. i really wish i had the time and money to do this quicker but i finally got the 350 in place this weekend. if the car wasn't 45 minutes away from me i might have had it in sooner. but we set her down in there this weekend. now it is a matter of going through all the wiring and emissions stuff and seeing what i need and what i don't. still need to get a fuel pressure regulator on it or switch the pump out. the engine has a mechanical pump on the block so what do u think is my easiest option? have a q-jet carb going on for now.
