87 IROC fixer upper
So my wife bought this 87 IROC from Craigslist in Savannah GA for $2000 this past January while I was still deployed and I didnt get to test drive it. She said when she test drove it, it ran fine...but after she paid the money for it and came back a few days later with the new registration and new plate, she drove it home and it ran like crap. So thats where the fun began!
So a friend of mine worked on it a bit before I got home and ended up replacing the MAF relay and the Fuel Pump relay because the wires melted while my wife was on the way home from buying it. He replaced about 15 feet of vacuum lines, and replaced the throttle position sensor...just to get it running above 20 mph again. So now I am in the process of getting rid of an annoying tapping noise and an exhaust leak from the passenger side cylinder head. Im having a great time working on this car. It seems like whenever I pull something apart...its a surprise on what I am going to find!
My baby sitting in the driveway when I got home.
At least the original owner recovered the seats...I replaced them with leather TA seats anyway.
Pulled the intake and heads, and this is all the crap I got out of them.

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
More pictures.
Waiting on the heads to get back from the Machine Shop.
Edelbrock Headers that are going in. I didnt want to cut the tubes off the top, so I just used pipe caps. I know it doesnt look great, but if I move to a place that does an emissions check...I want to make sure I am covered.
Y pipe cut off and waiting to weld on the new Y pipe that came with the headers.
Leather seats from a 4th gen TA. The need some work on the bottom...but they are OHHHH so comfortable!
Paint chips everywhere. Alot of the clear coat has come off in strips.
Hopefully by this weekend I can get some pictures of the engine put back together. I am still waiting on lifters to get here from Summit...and the heads should be done any day now. I still need to pull the tint off the windows because its been on there so long that the tint is now purple. Also replacing the 14 inch wheels with some 15 inch Z28 wheels...because I cant find or afford the stock IROC wheels just yet.
Its a work in progress...and now I am being accussed of cheating on my wife with my car!

Cool project! That pic of all the crap that came out of the heads/intake is pretty disturbing though! lol

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
Yeah the headlights are tilted a little bit. Just one of the many things I gotta correct on it.
Lucky me...my lifters just for here, and my heads are already done. Looks like my engine is going back together by this weekend! Thank goodness I have 30 days of leave to fix this thing so I am not missing out on work.
I was pissed off when I pulled the intake and valve covers off and saw all that crap in them. I just walked away for the night upon seeing it...I didnt want to break anything by getting pissed and throwing tools. I DID however contemplate taking it all over to the previous owner's house and leaving it in his mailbox!

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
When I get the $$$ to put new tint on I want to get something nice and dark in the car, (so you can't tell how dirty the inside of the car is walking by) but I wonder how window tint would hold up to the T-tops. If i get darker tint on the tops do you think it would be more likely to peel?

good start on the project. your not that far from me. when its up and running hollar out. a few of us get together from time to time. keep checking the local tell n sell and craigs list. i swear i saw a set of iroc rims for about $150.00 in your neck of the woods. also if your in need of any t-top or related items, let me know. i have a bunch of t-top trim and mounting pieces, and two sets of glass t-tops. both my camaros are a hard top and vert.

Good luck with your project , looks like your not scared to jump in and take things apart. You can tint the t tops I have done that on a few f body's , helps with sun beating through if you don't t top insert panels .

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
Just got the engine put back together and running again. It sounds great compared to what it sounded like before.
Now I need to find a cheap 700R4 to replace the one that is in the car now. I think its fried...and dont have the money to rebuild it since I just dropped a buttload into the engine.

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
You're doing great so far on it,sounds like. I just bought an 86 camaro iroc-z about a month ago, mines not in that bad of shape engine wise but theres alot of little things that is starting to add up to something big, lots of vacuum leaks (from home made plugs that couldnt plug anything), torsion (sp) bar wasnt attatched just wedged in place, shocks are shot ( no big deal ) caty was cut out and replaced with glass packs, the bolt that holds the air filter on is snape, air mixture on the carb was tuned about only 1/2 a turn out so wasnt gettin anything, exhaust has welds all the up and down it that was done very badly. timing was BADLY off. and tonight im replacing spark plugs and resetting timing and carb again. next week will be shocks. Seems like people who owned the cars before us didnt know what they were doing.

Yeah I think I saw the same iroc wheels on Craigslist a while back. I called the guy a few days after he put the ad up and they were already sold. I just bought a set of Z28 wheels for $100...so those should last me a while. They need to have the paint stripped off of them...but at least they are better than the 14 inch wheels I had on before.

Re: 87 IROC fixer upper
Well after getting the heads fixed, replacing my lifters, replacing my rockers, installing new headers, replacing the O2 sensor, replacing the MAF sensor, replacing the TPS, replacing the IAC valve, rebuilding the transmission, replacing the TV cable, replacing the shifter linkage, and replacing the vacuum hoses...I finally got it to run right again!
No more exhaust leaks, no more tapping, no more stalling and it shifts when its supposed to now! I've spent all 30 days of my block leave and almost $5000...but at last its reliable now! Cant wait to go on a cruise now that it wont die on me.
