Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
It's nothing but a fad to put big rims on any car down here in SoCal area like Los Angeles and the surrounding cities. I have seen 24's on many of thirdgens, Regals, El Caminos etc......... But that's how some of them think. They do the same with the 4th gen too.
18x9.5 are the biggest I went with.
I think I know who your are. I may have seen you at some of the meetings at Ricky & Ronnies. A Intrax 2in drop springs will hook you up fine.

That's a very nice car and those are some very nice rims...but...
I think they detract from the beauty of the vehicle. When you look at the car your eyes are immediately drawn to the rims because they are so big. I can't even imagine 22's. I didn't think they would even fit on these cars...
Not hatin just statin. Just one opinion...

The rims look good I think, but it appears to make the ride height go up. Maybe it'd look better if you got the body lowered, I just always dislike it when the wheels cause the car to be higher from the ground than it was originally. Not hating on your wheels per say... just would like to see the body of the car closer to the ground if it was mine.

If its what you like, I say go for it.
Personally, I think 18s are too big for cars, I hate low profile tires, I think they're ugly. I have 235/55/R16s on mine, and I love them, I'm thinking going down to a 15 inch rim though actually, I like a bit of rubber, lol.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
im leaning towards 20X9 irocs myself on my 88, im doing 20's because i would rather do 18's but they dont make them 9" wide. has anyone taken the weight of a 20X9 or even 20X8 iroc with tire, i remember years when i had 20" daytons there were ridicoulously heavy. my 19X10 c6' rims were only like 40lbs a piece pretty lightweight so im lookignt o do some comparison's

Car looks good but the wheels are rtoo large for my taste. Where can I find chrome IROC rims? I have 16's on mine and prefer to keep it that way.

Youll find all sizes of chromed IROC wheels on ebay.
I tend to agree with everyone else--nice, clean IROC BUT the wheels detract from the look of the car--18 inch max in my opinion.

agree with Bull. please dont make our cars ghetto.
ps-your wheels should never be bigger than your frieken windshield... or your hatch glass!!
if your going to put bigger rims on you have to get rid of the stock suspension. these cars look like 4X4's stock, imagine what your doing when you add 3 inches of wheel on it

1. It took you one year to respond to this?
2. You acknowledge that people have different tastes, then criticize those like me who say gigantic wheels look ghetto. That's what they call a logical fallacy. Obviously, that's proof that my tastes differ greatly from yours. Why would you say "Let me know what you think" in your original post if you didn't really want to know?
3.At least it's not a donker.

i normally dont post but the comment you posted is very disturbing.. the "ghetto" is a term for a section of a city.. so how is a car "ghetto"? It just shows no matter how far we come as people, ignorance will forever exist.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
It looks ridiculous. Sad but true. Apparently a lot of people like it, but a lot of people have bad taste.
Corvettes can pull off giant wheels because they ahve the ride height and the fenders cut in such a way to pull it off. On a thirdgen it just looks like it was meant to be a 4x4 and someone put giant train wheels on it instead of muddin' tires. There is meant to be some space betwen the tire and the fender on these cars.
See how close the tire is to the fender all the way around? See how the sidewall width of the tire is smaller than the area between the outside of the tire and the fender? See how low the rocker panel is compared to lip of the rim at it's lowest point? You just cant pull off that kind of look with our cars. the styling doesn't work unless you just like the disproportionate giant rims on a jacked up car look. If you can figure out a way to make the gfx stick out about 3 inches lower you might be able to pull it off.
17's look the best, but 18s work too as long as the car is dropped a couple of inches. To me the way our fenders are cut and the way our cars sit, 18's can look great but are pushing it. 17's are a little more proportional, but 22's? Are you serious?
The problem, as I see it, is that sports car styling cues follow function. Most of hte styling cues we like are from race cars. Everything from louvers to flared fenders to wide tires to a low slung look. Wheels like that are pure form at the detriment of function. It just doesnt really work right. It's, in a sense, the antithesis of what they were going for with our cars. It's kind of like a slammed, lowered to the ground dually truck or an Integra with off-road tires on it. It's a bit of an oxymoron.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
many reasons why people think 17s, 18s look the best because thats all they were use to. i personally think you should fill the wheel well with rim and not tire, but at factory height. I think anything under 20 looks to small but thats just what i like. Doesn't mean your taste is better then mine, its just a matter of opinions. People say its mean to be a "race car" so anything over 18s are pointless, but what will be your thoughts when you see a third gen on 20s or 22s running vets? Its about show and go.

This whole new phenomenon of normal cars running 24-26' wheels is just ridiculous, and hopefully it will fade away soon.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
InfernalVortex really hit it on the head... the 'vettes are built for that tire/wheel size to work/fit correctly on them, 3rd gens (and for that matter almost everything older than about 10y old) are not.
As far as I'm concerned, form follows function, if I could get some 15's in an appropriate size for what I'm building the car for, in a tire that actually has the performance envelope that I'm looking for that's what I would run. The problem is that there isn't much of a market for a BIG performance tire in a 15 or 16" rim, people see what is comming on new vettes and other "sports" or "muscle" cars and want 18's, 20's...
That being said, the few real performance tires that still exist in 15's are small sizes used on some imports. If I could get say 275/50-15's and 295/50-15's with a sticky compound and proper sidewalls I'd save 15-20lbs over the Z06 wheels that I have for the car _just to get a decent tire on it_. You don't _really_ need larger brakes (you can adjust braking with compound changes and proper cooling ducts), if I could get that same quality tire in a 15 the 80lbs of unsprung mass that I would save would count toward a significant performance increase.
FWIW, there is more of an advantage in performance to taller sidewall tires than just the weight suggests... I used to be heavily into autocrossing (damn, I'm just realizing that this was probably 15 or more years ago), and had the opportunity to try 2 identical hoosier competition tires, G60 15's and 16's (both basically the same height and width as 245/60/15), on identical wheels just 15x8 vs 16x8 at the same autox (they both even had similar numbers of runs and ages). Should have had the same grip and similar weights to them. I ran significantly faster on the 15's just because they gave more warning at the limit, so I was able to keep the car at the limit more of the time resulting in faster runs.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
Waste of money in my opinion. All I can think of is spending that money on go fast parts. When I was younger I wanted cars and trucks with"cool" aftermarket wheels.Guess I`m getting old cause now I think our cars and most performance cars look best in mostly stock trim. There are very few aftermarket rims I would even remotely consider putting on my car.IMHO The iroc is a dead sexy car I just dont care for the rims,BUT ITS YOUR CAR....DO WHAT YOU LIKE!
On a side note I fail to see how ghetto is a racist term. Its a part of town i try to stay out of where you do find a much larger 20"+ rim to car ratio than you do in other areas of town.Prolly a 10:1 ratio where I live.Thats just the way it is.Sorry if you were offended.

even if its ur daily driver you forgot one thing its a muscle car not some hoopty in the hood. You could of put some nice cragers or even some old school rims on it and would of looked nice. Your taking the attention away from the cleaness of the car and putting it on ur oversized chromed rims. Its a 50/50 discrace to everyone who owns a muscle car you might as well of posted a import on here.

fact is, if chip foose was in front of that car with a bottle of mothers in his hands, many of you all opinions would change.. he build "muscle" cars with 22s all day long.

if chip foose would of been in the pic he would of modified the fenders an wheel wells come over the tire more so the rims wouldnt be such a distraction from a nice car he would of made the rims flow with the car and not stand out like an eye sore. If you have the money for oversized rims then spend a little more on modifying the wheel wells to make it look better

Have to admit, the 20 IROC is the only way you can get away with more than 18 inch wheels in my book.

I'm sorry but if you wanted to put 20 even 22 you pick the wrong car my friend get a caddie or something.
I really don't understand spending 2000+ dollars on rims and tire then another hundred or so to make them fit it's just a waste of money.
((ok real question what is the purpose ? ))
the look ? the ride ? i really want to know

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
Im not much of a fan of his to begin with precisely because he puts those fracking huge wheels on every car he puts out. Old muscle cars just dont have the lines to properly pull of giant wheels. His cars still look good because he tends to lower them to the ground to give them a stance that can work with the bigger wheels, but I like more classic, race-inspired styling cues with my wheels. Most of his wheels dont really do it for me.

there for looks really they dont help with the ride of it and on top of all of that you have to get a new suspension for them to fit also

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
big wheels need big brakes i hope you know. another note sort of mentioned, the new sports cars use 20 inchers. lambos, ferraris, corvettes, vipers. course they all come with huge brake rotors.
i have 20s on my truck and used to have 18s on a civic, both with low pro tires. i love the look, the ride though is bumpy. you begin to find alllll the potholes, and they hurt. i had 2 tires pop from potholes that probably wouldn't of caused any damage on a normal profile tire.
low profile tires transfer shocks to your control arm bushings, and wear them out quicker.
also the tires cost more.
performance wise... low pro means less roll for sharper turns, but i doubt you'll notice too much of a difference unless you're on a circle track all day.
if it was my camaro and i had money for wheels i'd get 18X8.5"s up front, 20X10" in rear.

Re: Pics of my decision over 20" or 22".
40 pounds apiece for c6 wheels? ouch. my 19x10's hardiritts were 26 lbs each... i like big wheels, not donked out, but as big as will fit, vertically and horizontally. its funny how some people go insane over a big tire but giant cowl hoods, th400's, carbs, and flames painted on their cars are cool. some of you guys are real pieces of work...... AND remember it isnt the 80's anymore.
