LTX and LSXPutting LT1s, LS1s, and their variants into Third Gens is becoming more popular. This board is for those who are doing and have done the swaps so they can discuss all of their technical aspects including repairs, swap info, and performance upgrades.
whats goin on guys. tryin to finish up my buddies swap in his 92 RS. he wants to use factory gauges and im having a issue with the oil pressure gauge. it worked before the swap. now it only goes up to the top of where the red ends on the low side. i hooked up a mechanical gauge and it goes right to 60ish psi on cold start. ive tried his original oil pressure sensor, a new 3rd gen sensor, a 98 sensor, and 02 sensor. i have the tan wire off the sensor go to e5 on the c100 plug. did not touch anything with the cluster. doing some google searching and found this pic that has a arrow pointing to a "Oil pressure sensor resistor" right around the c100 plug. am i missing this causing the gauge not to read correctly? ive been goggling and searching this page but cant find anything on this besides this pic.
Hi Swapper, I know it may not be of much help, but I did do a search for the resistor you are looking for and I found this diagram. TBH I'm not sure how this is even supposed to work using a simple switch and a fixed value resistor to control a gauge, but, at this point my best suggestion would be to try eliminating the resistor (if you can find it buried in the harness) or to run a new wire from the sending unit to the oil gauge. It appears the resistor was a 1992 V6 (VIN T) thing only, the V8 diagram for 1992 shows a normal (without resistor) circuit.....
On my 89 Firebird V6 gauge and V8 gauge are different and use different sensors with different resistance ranges. I wonder if the 92 Camaro commonized either the sensor or the gauge between V6 and V8 and the resistor is the "correction" to make them both work.
yeah ive looked at both those diagrams. i have this one wired up pretty much like the 2nd one (v8 one) with the tan wire from the sensor to the E5 pin on the c100 plug and then didnt touch anything else inside the carto the cluster. this is why im kinda lost on this whole thing. i mean technically its wired like that diagram so it should read but it doesnt. i know im on the correct wire because if i unplug the sensor the gauge will fully shoot to the high pressure side of the gauge.
I'm now left wondering if the V6 gauge is so electrically different from the V8 gauge that it simply won't work without the resistor. Looking at both diagrams the V6 gauge is marked with "L" and some lines whereas the V8 gauge has actual PSI numbers marked on it . I know it sounds like a stretch but since we're out of guesses could you perhaps obtain & install a V8 gauge ?
