Nice build, are you coming to the MiFbody meet and greet? I do have a couple questions for you,
Which year truck can you pull the 5 wire MAF from, which engine?
How much was that plastic tubing kit, would it matter that I'd be hooking it up to the stock TB (don't remember if yours was stock sized or not)?

When is the meet and greet? Not sure I'll do a east side trip, but I have been to the one at gilmores a few times. I got my MAF from a 2001 5.3 Chevy truck. Not sure, but I think any 4.8,5.3,6.0 truck/suv has the larger diameter 5 wire MAF.
The plastic tubing was a UBI kit from AirRaid, it was almost 100 bucks just for the tube, and I only used a small portion of it. The filter, clamps, and couplers were almost another 100. It seems like a lot of money, but I really didnt find a CAI I was happy with for any less.

Here's the info on the Meet and Greet, I know the west side guys usually do a convoy over, I'm sure there will be a thread on that in the next month or so:
http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/sho...ational-Thread!
Too bad on how expensive those cai supplies are, thanks for the maf info though, should be able to get that coming soon.

Engine has no funny noises (yet)
Lost oil pressure, flakes in oil
F A W K....
Set on this a few weeks and decide to fix at a later date, or sell and do another project I have wanted to do for a long time.

sit on it,dont make a hasty decision yet. hopefully the damage isnt too bad,the car runs hard and the swap is all done.it wouldnt be hard to yank the motor out, fresh it up and put it back in.
i know how you feel, i just got my car up and running...screwed up my clutch/pressure plate while adjusting the clutch pedal out too far now the car sounds like it has a massive heat shield vibrating under the car when i hit 1800rpm. its just part of the game we play modding cars.

ghettocruiser has an LS1 short block with a built bottom end for just under a grand(pretty sure its sold now). But thats just a small fraction of what you have into it. Sorry to hear about that man

step away from it for a little while. that is a serious bummer. i fought a code for a year until i found a bad wire inside one of the injector clips...talk about frustrating.
it sounds amazing, and you have completed an awesome car. don't give up, just take sometime to wrap your head around the next step.

I have access to a 01' LQ4, 86,xxx miles for 400(longblock only). If I fix the car, this will most likely be the route I take. I knew this wouldn't last forever, but totally frustrated to have it happen so quickly. The real frustration though, is my other project always getting pushed off to keep this on the road.

WOW! I was just about to compliment you on your vids and then scrolled down to read THIS!! No oil pressure! That blows!! Am sorry to hear

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
The lq4 was too good to be true(as it sounded). The truck it came from had 86,000, but it was admitted that it was not the original engine, and there was no idea of real miles. Judging by the 1/2 inch thick layer of crud, I'd say a ton of miles more likely than not. If ghettocruiser has the engine, I am probably interested, didnt see it in classifieds so I bet its gone. For the cost of a shortblock, or rebuilding mine, its just not in the cards to get fixed anytime soon.

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
I put a mechanical guage on the car, and verified no oil pressure, only let it run 4-5 seconds. Still no valve clatter or noises. Checked oil again, and even drained about a quart to get oil from the bottom of the pan, and did t see any silver flakes. Maybe I was too freaked when I checked it the first time, I don't know. My good friend at the GM dealer, knows a other tech at his shop with a 2,200 mile take out(longblock from 01 Camaro) that I might be able to get my hands on. If not, I'll see wha a refurb on the shortblock will cost me, and decide from there if its feasible to deal with it right now. Either way, I am thinking a 1500 for a longblock would be fair, or maybe 1500-2000 for a shortbl

Think I would have the place who tuned the car do the rebuild if the route goes that direction, they are the LS go to place in The state. Input and opinions appreciated.

I don't want to over-simplify things here, but shouldn't you figure out why you have no oil pressure before you do anything? I know I would. Maybe it's something fairly easy to fix. I would think it would be cheaper than buying a new engine unless it's something major. I know it ran, so how major could it be? Maybe you should seek a professional's input on the matter. Just my two cents
I had low oil pressure on my '88 GTA and it turned out to be a bad crank. Just sayin'

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
I found some cheap 6.0 short locks on eBay, the ls1s were pretty pricy still. I don't really have a preference from the 5.7 to a 6.0. Nervous about buying one from eBay, as the warrantys are worded very oddly, and from vendors I have never heard of.
I don't think the motor is really hurt, if so, it can't be bad. At this point, it must come out and apart for inspections. The shortblock has 176,000 miles on it......and I always worried about that, and apparently for good reason. I should have had it freshened up to begin with, but I let myself get talked into leaving it the way it was.

I'm wondering if there is not just a problem with the oil pick up tube or o-ring?

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
I wonder the same thing. Car usually idled at 30psi warm, and 45 cruising at 60 in 6th gear. Got home Sunday night and it was ideling at 10-15 pounds, came back up to 30-35 psi at 1500 rpm. Shut it off and went to bed, then started it Monday to check it out, and just never built oil pressure. Only let it run 5-6 seconds twice, zero both times. Coming out tonight, and we'll know what's going on this weekend.

Split motor and trans today, got it on the stand and swapped the pump with a known to be good (but used) pump. Pulled the plugs and turned it over with the starter, came up to 25 PSI after a few seconds of cranking.
Thinking get a ported and shimmed ls6 pump from Texas speed and roll with it?

Got some parts from summit today. Don't see why I won't have it back together Friday night.
Tuner returned my call from last week when he was out of town. I will have a shortblock done this winter, either this ls1, or a 6 liter. Either way, he says a stock shortblock build would be fine with my power goals, with upgraded rod bolts and better than stock bearings. So long as I give him a serviceable block, crank, and rods, he says 1500 is a reasonable number to expect once its all done.
Will update this weekend when its together again.

Was there obvious problems with the pump when you took it apart?

176,xxx miles, still has crosshatch on every cylinder. Weird coloration though.....
Don't really have the funds to rebuild, but it will get done soon. I have money put away for other things, but it will get used to put this back on the road. Call my tuner back tomorrow and get specifics, cost, and time to drop it off nailed down. Wish I had the money for a 6.0 to get built instead, maybe somebody will trade a rebuild able shortblock 6 liter for this...?

Why not 5.3 untill you can rebuild the 5.7 or get a 6.0? they are cheap as hell

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
Very good friend indeed. Said friend and I tore it down to a block with rotating assembly last night, and dropped it off at baker engineering this morning. 1-2 week wait to get it back. Motor was very clean inside, better than expected by judging from outside appearance. Cam bearings showed copper, and the cam wasn't even contacting the tops of the bearings, as they had the dark brown oil stain on the top sides of every cam bearing. One cylinder had water in it at one time, but engine turned all the way over by hand freely. I am having flat tops put in, so if it needs to be bored, its shouldn't cost any more (or minimal) money anyways. Normal chain slop, but other than that, all looked great. Main and rods looked nice, crank even looked perfect, crosshatch in every cylinder. Ls1 shortblock should be gone today, and will chuck the 317s from the 6.0 up for sale this weekend.

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
One rod was replaced, builder wasn't satisfied with its sizing apparently. The entire rotating assembly was balanced, with ARP rodbolts. He said they typically use katech bolts, but I guess the rods sized out better with the area or something this time. 0.030 over hyperutectics with coated tops and skirts, and coated bearings. Nothing real special, but hopefully it will last me a long time.

It should last you a while, especially if they used good quality parts (which it sounds like they did). Did they change cam bearings too?

Re: Another ls1-t56 swap- only one question so far...;)
New cam bearings too. Could even see the grind marks I the Ross from balancing them, and the cleanup work they did on the crank. They stamped their name in the crank, hopefully that's a sign of pride in what they do.
