84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Well a few months ago I bought my own 3rd gen. It is an 84 Z28 hardtop. Original L69 HO 4bbl 5.0 had been replaced with what seems to be a late 70s 350 from a truck. Along with destroying 99.9% of the wiring under the hood and some on the interior, the PO also decided to hack up the interior ( gauge cluster was made out of a license plate? ) Well anyways, I have now replaced much of the wiring under the hood, and pieced the interior back together.. Still need an oem gauge cluster though. Now it time to start on the engine! I bought a 97 LT1 from a Firebird off a friend of mine for $500. He sold the T56 that was mated to it before I could get it so I'll be using a 700R4 since I have two in my garage, Ha! Well, the LT1 was just plum worn out, so it needed a rebuild. Last week I got it all torn down, looked like its definitely going to need boring.
As far as the engine build goes, I'll just be doing a moderate build. Pistons, Scat rods, and stock crank(fully Balanced). Ported intake and heads, upgraded springs, roller rockers, Comp Pushrods. 52mm TB, etc, etc.
Still haven't decided which cam to use. I was thinking the LT4 hotcam. I'm not looking for huge hp numbers here.. just a good weekend driver.

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Also, since this car was carbed before.. Any recommendations on a good inline fuel pump? ( I have no desire to drop the fuel tank, and I won't mind a noisy pump. ) and, my fuel lines are on the passenger side.. could I just get some from a tpi car to move the lines to the drivers side?

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Getting the lines from a tpi, tbi, or efi V6 car will work, its a good bit of work to install them, but if you've got the majority of the driveline out for the swap it wont be so bad.

For inline, i'd probably be sticking with a bosch 044

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

So basically the lines from any efi car will work?

300lph..wow. with that much flow, it'd probably be wise to get a good AFPR? like the Aeromotive piece?

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Shouldnt need to get an afpr, but its never a bad idea.

Yes TPI/TBI/V6efi they are all the same underneath, there are differences in the end near the shock tower, some point straight up, some go at a slightly forward angle, but it really doesnt matter which you use.

The bosch will support the power, its high quality, and reliable.

Lol, been there, done that. Hopefully the lines will be going on dry though.. so shouldn't be an issue.

I'm going to Polish up the rails and TB and throw them on there to see how it looks tomorrow. Should look sweet!

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Nice job on the polishing, try to reuse as many factory bolts as possible(except head bolts, rod bolts etc). I got new bolts from Ace and the threads were alittle more coarse. Just trying to give small pointers, seems lik,e youve got most of it under control

Thanks for the tip. I was planning on using ARP for the heads, main caps. The rods I'm getting come pre-installed with ARP studs so that's takin care of :]
Maybe I'll use them for the intake too, idk yet. I have NO intake bolts, ha, it didn't come with any. Engine wasn't complete so I'm trying to piece it back together.

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

That connector is part of the a/c harness, it plugs into the corresponding plug on the engine harness. Though I'm quite sure thats out of a newer chassis, so you probably didnt have the same one on yours.

The factory A/C harness on this car was completely destroyed. I got one out of a 91 so I could use the newer motor. but, I cant seem to find the other side of this connector anywhere. all the camaros/firebirds I look at have their harnesses ripped out

Edit: The engine harness was destroyed too so, even if it was there, I would never know.

haha, no. its my dads 89 Dakota, I put a rebuilt 318 magnum/ 5spd that makes roughly 300 hp in it. Fun little truck!

My Z28 should be much more fun though!

Lol, oh no a 2.8 problem

getting mad at someone because you were posting blatant advertising some reason in his thread, and it was completely unrelated, and wanting to withhold help as a result.

Guess what, i've been at this a LONG time and i'm sure i'll be more than helpful with his issue that you want to act like you're the only one that can help.

His above post read "you might want to look at your pm's, i'm the one that was helping you with your 2.8 problem"

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

YOU posted that you WERE helping the OP with his 2.8 problem, then went back, edited it and put "good luck"

You didnt have a "feeble attempt" at help, you just posted a link to your swap, into a truck with "not how I did it"

Bounce ideas off who for what ?

Posting a link to your stuff is not bouncing ideas.

Also, Anyone have a pinout for an 1984 Connector 100? I have a couple wires I can't figure out where they go.
I kinda remember that plug when I put a 90 TBI harness in my 82 trans am. If memory serves me right it plugs into a harness that goes to all the pressure switches for the a/c but could be wrong. Ask a 90-92 owner about that plug but I'm sure that is what it goes to due to the green and gray wires and black and red one. It either plugs into that or the main engine electrical harnes I just cant remember. But like I said ask a 90-92 owner and they can tell you exactly where it goes. Here you can kinda of see it as well.

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

If you wanted the pinouts for it:

The light blue wire connects to the a/c pressure switch, it originates at the a/c control panel, goes to the a/c cycling switch, then its output goes to that connector and on to the a/c compressor.

The large red wire provides power for the high speed blower relay.

The ground grounds the blower.

Theend.

Edit: the one in the above picture is from a V6 car, they use all 4 slots, where the V8 cars only have the above 3 wires.

Thanks! I have most of the pinouts/ schematics for this car (Thank you AllData! )
I'm probably not going to be running A/C unless I can find Vette brackets, or save up enough to get a tubular K-member. so power for high, and ground is all i need for now, just need the stupid connector! ha.
I suppose if all else fails i could just stick some spade terminals in there, but that would look tacky.. and tacky isn't my thing.

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Honestly if your even considering AC id notch the kmember while the motor is out. I neglected to do mine now im kinda thinkin AC sounds nice. lol. With a welder and a grinder it can be only about a 2 hour job and be very cost friendly. No need for a tubular Kmemeber just to have AC.

BTW comin along good, props for tackling wiring by yourself, that ***** a nightmare.

I might do that instead... I'll have to find a welder though lol.
Wiring isn't too bad ;] I rewired that entire engine compartment on the truck in post #18 And Chrysler wiring is alot more complicated than GM stuff

Update from the Machine Shop, Their hanging the new rods on the pistons, and are going to balance the rotating assembly today. Whoo!
(stock crankshaft, Scat Forged I-Beam rods, and Sealed power coated pistons 4.030")

Got some stuff done in the interior.. New shifter in and a new E-Brake handle..

Anyone know what this style brake handle is from? I've never seen one before but just had to have it when I saw it on Ebay.

E-Brake is from an early ThirdGen FireBird; 82-83,... maybe 84 as well. I just installed the same one in my Berlinetta !

Couldn't agree more. I'm a strong believer of the saying "Built, not Bought"
IMO It's a lot more fun when you build it yourself, instead of someone else doing it for you.

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Found out a couple things today about my new trans...
the Converter is a Bradco 2400 stall. And the trans itself is a 94 :/

What all would I need to change on it to run properly with my 97 lt1/ecm??

Just the solenoids/Wiring? or does the valve body need to be changed too?

Re: 84 Z28 LT1 Swap

Where are you coming up with it being different ?

IIRC 94-97 are all the same, 93's are "4L60" no E, which was really just a renamed 700R4.

the PWM change in 95 is what i'm referring to.

Edit: It seems that all I need to do is disable the PWM functions in the PCM's trans tables and all is well.

Forgive me, GM transmissions are not my strong suite lol
