91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

As the title says I have started an LSX swap this past weekend. I was torn between the LTX and LSX want but I found a 5.3/4L60E with 130 000 for $900 so I couldn't resist.

Looks like I'm going LSX now.

I'll post pictures once I figure out this picture feature.

Also if anyone has any F-body stuff for the 5.3 I could use it.. lol

Re: 91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

Intake in the mail and email sent to Comp to look into a cam.

I'm looking into painting the engine because of the iron block and I was looking for suggestions. I was thinking of painting it chevy orange because although the 5.3 is a 325, it is very close to the 327s in the original Camaros so I was thinking of painting it orange with black accesories and the heads will stay aluminum.

That is a pic of what I was thinking some what and I was looking for what people thought.

Thanks

Re: 91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

I'm not digging the orange paint, but it's not my car either! I really dig an aluminum color paint even though I know your block is iron. Be sure to pressure wash it and use high-temp engine paint.

What's your plan for the trans since it doesn't have a torque arm mount? What headers are you planning on using?

What harness? Rebuild the engine or at least a light hone? Keeping AC? Get a pan/windage/pickup sourced yet? What about front accessories?

What intake did you buy?

I've a '91 Z LS swap in the works so I'll be keeping up with yours of course. Keep it up!

Oh and post some pics of the car!

Re: 91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

I'm not sure about the orange paint either but I thought it was something to see what people thought and go from there. I was thinking of paining the block and aluminum colour too actually so we will see. Hell I even thought about the paint job below for the car but I think it is a bit over the top...lol

WRT the transmission/torque. I am pretty sure I'm going to go with the spohn tranny brace/torque arm combo from Hawks.

But the problem is the tranny I bought with the engine is a 4x4 so I need to change output shaft and tail housing to use it. Since the tranny has less then 130 000 kms on it and it matched the engine I am temped to do the swap but it might be easier to get a new tranny and sell this one. So I am not sure what I will do.

I think I will be leaving the short block as is if I can because there is no ring ridge and the original cross hatching is still very prominent.

for headers I will probably just use stock LS1 manifolds because they are cheap and from what I read they are pretty good as far as manifolds go and I really don't want to pay the coin for Hawk's headers. They may be good but probably out of my range to get the build done in time for next spring.

I have the harness and CPU from the truck and I will have it dyno tuned after it is built and in the car. I am currently having Comp look at what I have and what I want and they will be suggesting a cam setup for me so that my august pay check goes to them...lol

I am just sticking to a stock LS1 intake for now because I got a great deal.

The car doesn't have AC so it will be AC free. The AC I have is biomechanical and require me to roll down the windows... lol

I don't have the pan and acc sourced out yet but I am tentatively searching the forums to find some. But I found a place while reading up on the swap that I can pick up the pan and what not for about 270 plus shipping and I think Hawk's sells acc set ups for 850 but I would sure like to get some for cheaper if I can.

Well I'll be looking forward to seeing your swap too and perhaps we can help each other out if we get stuck.

That is a quick pic of the car and I'll post one of two more tonight.

but it's mini-tubbed with some decent metal work so it was a pretty good deal. Plus it was $250.

The plan is to swap everything from my '86 onto the '91. The '86 was rusty in all the wrong places, so the '91 made sense to me especially since it only has a little rust on the floors. Which I already fixed.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/body...-repair-w.html

So after I bought the '91 I started looking for a LS donor car. Found a running/driving '99 LS1/T56 car that a guy from MI delivered to my house for $3600 (I had no idea what kind of deal that was at the time)

I ended up selling the 355/T56 from the '86 for $3600 so I broke even after I bought the '99. The best part is that after I pulled everything I needed from the '99, I sold the roller for $1100! This all happened last October and like I said, I had no idea how good of a deal that was.

My plan is to keep all creature comforts. AC, cruise, radio, rear seats. I've been planning the whole thing for a while, but **** has gotten in the way lately. What's holding me up will actually benefit the build in the long run.

I bought a nice Tig welder which meant I had to run a subpanel into my detached garage. That of course meant digging a 2' deep 60' trench by hand. I'm also running a natural gas line for a winter heater in the same trench which is allowed by code.

Also, I bought a 4-post drive-on lift for my garage which meant moving some beams and careful measuring. All of which have left me zero time to work on the car. Almost done with the gas line though so it won't be long before I'm back to work.

Sorry to hi-jack

Do you plan to notch the K-member for the oil pan? I feel your pain on the LS1 intake. I'm always looking for an ls6 intake but people dish out $400 for one and that just seems too high. If anything I'd love a FAST 90/92, but that'll be down the road.

I have the '99 manifolds from the '99 Z I parted out for my swap if you're interested.

Re: 91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

I'm not sure if I want to notch my K-member. I wasn't planning on doing it but the more I read the more I think I should.

I am still leaving an after market k-member as an option but i don't know.

I could be interested in the manifolds but I'll have to wait until mid august pay check probably but I'm interested in them though that is for sure.

Re: 91 Camaro 305 TBI to 5.3/4L60E swap

So I got my intake the other day and I got some wiring diagrams for the engine I have and I was wondering if there is going to be an issue with the truck computer I have.

The original truck had an servo controlled throttle body and I am obviously changing to a mechanically controlled throttle body so will the computer let the engine run with out a acceleration pedal position sensor? I am assuming that this is something that I can just tune out but I am wondering if I am going to have issues while trying to get it from here to the garage.

Thanks
