LT1 - Caprise vs F Body vs Vette
Iv heard getting the vette motor in a 3rd gen is very hard to do. Not sure why. But what about the caprise LT1? How does that swap over?
The Caprise LT1 can be had sooo much cheaper then the F-Body's.. are they a harder install? More of a wiring pain in the ***?

there is no difference in the way a vette LT1/F body LT1/B body LT1 mounts up. You have to watch the Caprice/Roadmaster cars because they also came with an engine that looks like an LT1 but its the L99 4.3 v8. im sure you dont want that. The B body LT1s are cheaper because they are iron headed and have a different cam from the vettes and F bodys. Wiring the engines up is about the same.

Where can I find specs on the B body LT1?
If im just buying a motor I can swap out the cam pretty easily I assume.

The accessories mount differently on the B-body as well. The depth of the hub on the crank is different, the pulleys have to match up with the hub so...if you use a B-body motor, don't expect to mix and match the accesories on the front of the motor. Also, I've heard it said that the oil pan from an F-body slips right in place so if you use the B-body motor, plan on swapping the oil pan. I am not really sure why the Caprice oil pan doesn't fit but I know that the pan on my car was changed from the Caprice unit (I had painted it before bringing it to the shop that finished my build) and I am assuming the put an F-body oil pan on it. Another difference is that the 94 Caprice LT1 already had a vented Opti where as the F-bodies didn't get that until 95. I can't remember if the cam dowel depth changes based on the body the motor came out of so make sure you get cam and opti to match up.
Here is a silly question for you:
Why not put an LS series motor in instead?
Things to consider here:
The LT1 was built from 92 to 97. Only 5 years and not many mechanics are that familiar with the peculiarities of the LT1. The LS series has been built from at least 98 on, and there are a lot more mechanics and after market parts for them. There are a lot more cores for the LS series motors out there now and the price for building power in an LS motor is a lot easier on the wallet...

Re: LT1 - Caprise vs F Body vs Vette
you dont need to if you get a 92-95 lt1. only have to worry about that with a 96-97 in which you pretty much need the gauge cluster from the obd2 car, so im just doing a 4th gen interior swap on my car all from the same car i parted out for the stuff i needed. lt1/t56, dash, center console, rear axle, seat belts. all from a 97 z28.
