Ready for cam.Tsp 228R or Tr230/224?
I got a 2000 ls1.Im stuck between these two proven power making mild cams and would like some opinions and what would be best for my overall performance and driveability.I know tuning is what really makes or breaks the setup but here is what I have and plans for later.
Currently Im going to use the stock 241 heads, mill them down, port polish, springs and pushrods.Stock ls1 intake and tb,85mm maf and custom cai, stock ls1 manifolds and custom y pipe to 3 inch catback.Stock t56 and stock 3:23 gear.
Next year I would like to get Hawks long tube headers and ls6 intake, and gears..either 3.73 or 4.10.I love a nice choppy cam but like having street manners.Im looking to hit around 380whp and tq ideally but anything over a solid 350hp/tq and Ill be happy.
I like the 228r for its great overall power band upto 6500rpm and its got a nice lope at idle. Its a well used cam choice for a long time. But Im starting to see more and more guys running the reverse split cam especially on ls1's yielding 400whp on stock heads and manifolds.
What would you guys recommend or have experience with either one from power gains to ease of driving.

I'm running tsp cnc ported 241 heads milled with matching springs, A tsp 228 cam on a 114 center line. its not the one you listed in fact I don't even see mine on there site but I believe its very very similar. the drivability is pretty good. great vacuum with a nice choppy idle. You will notice a little cam surge in parking lots but its nothing too bad. when I first installed it the stock tune ran the car fine and I was able to drive the car around while I logged data and changed the tune with out too much of an issue. IM running 3.73 gears and a 6-speed. its pretty decent ratio for what I do (sits most of the time but sees more cruising than the track) If I was going to do more track time I would go with a deeper gear. if it was going to see more everyday use I would have went with a 3.55

I have a taste for the larger grinds, the reverse split has a bigger intake duration so it is going to pull a bit more air, i would go with a normal split if i had the choice.

torquer V3, MS3, the TR224 is the venerable reliable cam thats been around a long while, T-Rex is the venerable reliable donkey dick lopedy lope cam that has held the cam only record, theres the polluter cam, G5X3, vengeance cams...

i was leaning towards the 228R cam on either a 110 or 112lsa and having it tuned. Most people say that with reverse split cam really favor a free flowing exhaust to really show its potential...and free flowing exhaust just isnt in my grasp on this build.

all of them are like that. choosing a cam for sound is just... not smart.. you can make any small cam sound lopey with tuning. not difficult. if however, you want to go fast.. the G5X3, MS3, Torquer V3, T-Rex, the Polluter, custom grind from Pat G on LS1Tech, any vengeance grind.. theres a lot of proven cams. no big deal if youre getting headers and such later. you just wont make as much now.

I wasnt basing my choices from the way the cams sound. Those other cams are also proven but for the suggested power bands and spinning upto 6800rpm isnt where Ill most likely see too often.Im more on the street light to light cruiser side and not looking for peaky cam/head combo.I want to focus more on a more useable power under the curve. My goal isnt all out fast, just a fun mild street car that I wont have to keep tuning because of part throttle bucking/surging from going with a bigger cam to make a few more peak hp on the topend.
I know adding long tubes and upgrading my intake will only improve my overall performance. But looking at the reverse split cams are producing impressive numbers on cars using stock heads and stock manifolds is what caught my eye as Ill probably be using stock for quite sometime for now.

The Cheatr cams are nice but I want more of a chop than they offer.I dont want to sound like stock but Im using stock manifolds for now untill next year when I upgrade to long tubes.I will look more into the LgG5x3 and see if its something that would be in my best interest.
