92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Well Its my turn I suppose. While there are so many Impressive swaps here I'll try to stay up to task... Well my sway took place approx 2 years ago and after a short amount of time (and very little miles) I got sick of the level of performance. Don't get me wrong the LS1 in no slouch. I just get the "itch". So here we go.. I sold my turbo 2005 GTO cause I never drive it so thats what financing this whole project.

Overview- I installed a Ford 9" with a Detriot Locker and 3.25 gears and Moser Axles, I've already gutted the interior and started stripping the engine bay and exterior for paint. My goal is to keep 100% of the creature comforts while being able to knock down a 10 sec 1/4 mile time. It will be powered by my ls1 that I'll be stripping for forged pistons/rods and a good FI cam. I've already started with the hot pipe mock up. I will be using "Log Manifolds" due to lack of space. I started making them out of schedule 40 (yes I know its overkill... But these will not crack also plenty of meal for clean-up/blending) I ordered 1/2 flanges to resist warp, I also ordered my turbo from a sponser on LS1 Tech. A turbonetics TC78 w/ .96 A/R. Heres some pics of the mach up/ Manifold build.

So where is the turbo going to be mounted?
I see the hot pipes on the passenger side.

Turbo will me mounted between the engine and radiator. The fans will be mounted in front of the radiator. Intercooler will be mounted in the front bumper after its notched.

The radiator and Condenser will be in the stock location. The fans will be mounted on the front side of the core support with modified hood latch bracket to clear fans accordingly. Hopefully modification won't me needed.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Slowly getting parts in. I purchased my intercooler pipes, V-bands, Extreme torque arm, Panhard bar, Turbo, T4 flange, AEM Tru Boost, AEM wideband, Roll Bar, But now I'm thinking the tc78 may not cut it. Looking at the 76GTS. Have a chance to buy one. May sell off the TC78 and just build a forged 6.0L and go for some better HP #. Go big or go home right? No real updates. Just been out of town. Now i'm off. Hoping to mount the intercooler and mount the roll cage ect.

Small update, still stripping car. I got a price quote on paint, also have been sanding and smoothing the engine bay. I love all the sharp edges lol! Thank you johnson and johnson for bandaids to keep the dust out and blood from clogging up the sandpaper.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Sorry no updates, But I just recently had a Early New addition to my family... Bella Brook Born july 6th, 2lbs 5oz and 15" long. She was 2.5 months early but that hasn't slowed her down!

But whar I have done, Got my torque arm mounted up, and my front bumper notched and braced for intercooler. Pics will be posted soon. Got the turbo in too! Looking for a 6.0l to build just so I don't have to tear apart a ls1 that only has 70k miles to forge it.

Thanks 1ADan! Yea I'm sitting here in the hospital. Plotting my work on the car for next week. Painter called, some of my body panels are done, wants more. Bad news. Hood had hail damage and is a little tweaked. So SS hood is gonna be ordered. Putting the Black heritage stripes on it. Heres some pics that were promised.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Well guys started working on my cross over. The turbo is going to mount right in front of water pump , kinda sit a little below. The crossover's black because they use to be my Y pipe... they had low miles so I chopped it up and used it. I also picked up a 5.3l for cheap, decided to build it so I don't have to build my Ls1 w/72k miles... Didn't make sense. Ordered my Compstar rods, Wiesco -11 cc pistons and ARP Head studs. Its pretty sweet having a sister in law that gets them at 10% above cost! Yay me!

Looking sweet man, what size are your primaries, logs, and crossover? Also is that a CXRacing intercooler? I just had a friend bend me up some tubing to build my log manifolds so im going to start on that as soon as i finish my 4l80e swap.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Thanks! I just read about peoples manifolds cracking that were made of exhaust pipe..So I figured what the hell.. Exhaust manifolds are heavy so ill make the passenger heavy. The were all schedule 40 1.5" to schedule 40 2.5" to my cross over thats 2.5" coming from both sides merging into my t4 flange. I was looking at a sponsor (ls1tech) log design thats how i came up with that. Yea thats a CXracing intercooler. Real nice quality.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Iv been looking at those CXRacing intercoolers, cus a friend of mine just got one for his turbo 4th gen project. It even came with an inspection and pressure test sheet so ill propaply go that route also. A friend works a company that sell mandrel pipe benders so he is making all my tubing. He just made some 1 7/8" primaries that are .144 wall and 2.4" logs that are .190 wall (standard exhaust is .065-.083). I hope to make something similar to yours. Keep up the great work

No real updates, My days off I had to paint the house, yay me. I did make a order though and picked up a Speed Inc TU1 cam (221/221 .581.581 113 LSA) off LS1 tech brand new for a hella deal. Heres whats been ordered.
--11cc Wiseco 3.903 Pistons
- Callies Compstar H-Beams
- Comp Trunion Kit (rockers)
- Arp Head Studs/Main Studs
- Double Roller Timing Chain

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff. It was enough to put a dent in the wallet lol.

Body guy got my doors, Hood, Fenders and ground FX all blocked and primed ready for paint. Next it'll be time for the shell.

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Thanks, Post some more pics later. Gotta upload them to the computer. Well Hood, fenders,Ground FX, Spoiler, Doors ect are all painted and waiting on the machine shop to call me and let me know my engines done. Pretty excited. I may start a thread in the History/Resto section since thats pretty much what it is, Just powered by LSx.. Lets see, also got my Derale fans in. There 12" good for 2200 CFM ea which will be mounted as pushers. Do you guys think I should build a shroud for them? I was thinking sice I have some aluminum, cut the aluminum to fit the front of the radiator opening, mount them to it and drill a series of staggerd holes for airflow while cruising(2.5"). Or just mount them as floaters with some 1" strap?

I like how you notched the bumper reinforcement for the intercooler. How did you make those holes in the rear of it, looks like the edges might be beveled. Do you have some kind of die to do that?

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Thanks, No Die, But I know what your talking about. I didn't use a Dimple Die. I trimmed bumper then boxed it with 1/8 mild steel and drilled a series of 2.5" holes and hit the high spots with a 80 frit wheel.

I have an update, Engines at machine shop, Rolling chassie over at body shop, Hood, GFX, Fenders, Doors, Spoiler ect all picked up and bubble wrapped. They are straight as an arrow! And shinny. The color really POPS! Heres some pics

First 2 pics are the hood and fenders done with some guide coat ready for more blocking, third is engine on its voyage to the machine shop.

Cool build and nice fab work on the logs. Sched 40 aint overkill now sched 80? Yeah maybe... Its funny about the AC I just ditched mine. Its at the point now where when I drive my car Im driving it for fun and if its nice enough out? The roofs are off. I used to hate the tee's for structure reasons years ago but now that im older? Enjoy em all the time. I almost never used the AC in my LS1 swap.

Anyways rambling over. nice build

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Hey thanks! Sch 40 may be a little over kill, But if it cracks I'll be pissed. Sch 80 hell yea it would. I'd love some T-Tops but this is the car of my dreams when I was 16, then I saved up and bought it. Blew engines a few time and had a lot of good memorys now I'm grown up with some adult funds so now.. More fun begins. I have a hard time updating something (Newer engine) and deleting creature comforts. I gotta have a/c!

I was on the Fabrication side and saw the guy who's building a 2000HP street car, His stock Modified a/c bracket. I shoulda did thaT! damn bracket and compressor was like $400 bucks. Oh well

Well got a little more done. Everything mic'd and clearanced checked. Gapped rings .021 top .025 bottom. Got my valve spring heights adjusted (Has to add .045 in shims). Installed rods and pistons then degreed the cam. I know the build will pick up when I finally get the damn car back! Still waiting on the paint!

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Small updates, Got the engine a little more together, I pulled the nipples off the water pump, Drilled and tapped for 90's to clear down pipe. Polished my Throttle Body. I also took my oil pan to my welder to get the -10 fitting welded to it for oil drain. Talked to my Paint Guy and the final blocking on my car has been done. Now just more primer and wetsanding. Wish it was done a little faster!

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

So little update. This thing is RED! The body guy said its the redest you can go before it turns orange. Just the paint alone cost him $800 his cost. I guess red is $$$. So I ordered my Torque Converter from Edge today. Andre is pretty awesome. He hooked me up. I'll let you guys know about what at the end of the month when I get it in the mail :secret2:. He's a good guy and really didnt mind me keeping him on the phone. Also I decided to run -8 fuel line. Found a vendor where I'm at for work that sales SS304 tubing. I'm getting a 10" length for like $22 bucks. Its .035 wall. Also picking up some -6 for my tranny cooler lines. I was pretty excited about that!. I was putting the tranny back together and found the intemediate sprag was spinning both ways. I had to pry the sprag off the drum. So apprently its "rolled". So I ordere the new 32 element sprag just need to order the drum the its back together!! Heres some pics. Like I said sound deadner in (stuff sucks! To damn sticky!)

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Little update, I planned on getting more stuff done. But there was all sorts of crazyness on my days off. Oh well. I pulled front suspension apart. Took a wire wheel and cleaned off all under coat (which sucks bad!) undercoated again with DIY roll on bedliner. Then upon front end assembly I couldnt get front springs to compress with jack on a-arm due to the fact the car was to light... So time to drop in engine. That helped a lot! JAcked right into place. I also pulled my fuel pump to start fabbing up my dual setup. Also installed my new Founders strut mounts. Pretty nice units. But you cant reuse the factory strut covers (the plastic cup thing that covers strut shaft) It wont let the mount sit all the way down on the strut. Heres some pics.

And putting the engine in.. But i think I ran into ban news. May have to pull the pan and move -10 weld on bung on oil pan. I was comapring it to another build and well.. Still not right. May get away with jacking up engine and installing a -10 45 degree bend (female to male). Will see.. Damn it!

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

Sorry about the lack of updates. I gotta work to pay for this mess... and I cant work on this mess cause I have to work. But heres a rundown of what I've gotten done. Started the mock up on all the turbostuff. Had to figure out where to mount my wastegate and how I'm going to run the down pipe. Yea..tight fit. Well decided i'm going to vent my wastegate to atmosphere. I got my down pipe all ran. also welded up my cutout for my electric cut out. I also mounted the HVAC stuff. But had to pull the box out of the passenger compartment to notch it for my wiring harness to clear. I used fiberglass and some cardboard to make the mold. Wax on cardboard so it wouldnt stick. Also Installed the tranny and custom built a cross member for the 4l80e. But heres some pics. Also got my fuel lines ran. They are 1/2 Stainless supply and 3/8 return. Got it from a oilfield supply store for like $60 bucks and is pressure rated for like 1000psi. I also decided to run just stock relays since there weather pack. I'm just repinneing them and mounting them by the battery I think. Just trying to have as many hidden wires as possible. I'll keep posting updates. This weekend my goals are to mount dash back up, Drop fueltank to get fuel system finished up.

Some tranny install pics. And my new 3K Stall For Andre @Edge Performance. Real stand up guy! You can see in the pic how the camaro was almost just "made" to accept the 4l80e...

Now a little candy.. Got the downpipe in place and tacked, Turbo half assed bolted in, and you can see the tight fit of the truck manifold v-band.

Looks good, I thought about using the truck manifold on the driver side but I wanted some symmetrical. That TC looks fairly easy to mount. How close are you to being done?

Great build man! And awesome color red!
And did you have any pictures of the bung for the oil pan? Im still in the planning stages of my build. I also see the truck manifold for the driver side... is there one on the passenger side as well?
I planned to put my turbo off to the side where the battery/overflow area is.... any reason you decided to put it between your engine instead?

Re: 92 Z28 Forged 346 TC78 Build While retaining A/C!

I'm still a few months away to getting it on the road. Just ordering stuff as I need it. The Conduit bender worked great! Figured it would kink bu it didn't. I know what you guys mean about keeping it asemetrical.. But I wanted a/c and so I had to build a custom manifold. I used all schedule 40 bends to build it. Its as heavy as a stock one. I had to mount the turbo it front due to the down pipe routing and a/c compressor location. Really didn't want to run my exhaust outta the front fender or anything.

I would prefer not to either. The way I "plan" to mount the turbo is so that I can use a 90 degree bend down through my battery tray which will go towards the intercooler. With the turbine wheel close to the fender so I can have the exhaust go right over the manifolds and towards the rear of the car. Think a setup like this is far fetched?

That sounds good. It'll work with a non a/c heater box. But the it was souch a tight fit I had t go under the manifold. Not ideal but the only way. If i need to change plugs on that side I gotta pull the down pipe.
