LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

Hey guys, new to the forum. I have a 1990 RS that i'm swapping a LS6 into. I'm finishing building the motor (stock but with Lq9 heads.)

Basically just wanted to introduce myself.

Names Ryan

I'm 19 years old

Bought my third gen 2 years ago.

I paid a 1000 for it

I've done all the work on this car from the very beginning.

Car has come a long way......really long ways lol.

Now it's come down to swapping a LS into it.

Hoping to turbo the car. I'm wanting around 600rwhp.

Ideas, N/A? Turbo, etc. Let me know advice on the swap or some power adders you guys recommend.

Welcome to TGO. Have you looked over the LS1 swap sticky in the LTx/LSx forum yet? Lots of info in there

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...third-gen.html

Turbo LSx will get you 600rwhp pretty easily with a decent turbo but is the rest of the drivetrain up to the task? LS1tech has a good sticky in the FI forum about all the little extras required for a power adder build that most dont consider. Give it a glance before you start ordering parts

t-76 with a .96 a/r if you really want turbo. if you want a fast street car thats easy to drive and doesnt need tlc id do a h/c/i ls6.

I'm already doing heads cam and intake. I'm hoping to get 420ishrwhp on motor and getting to the 6's with the turbo.

I'm not sure what cam i should go with though. Heads i have Lq9 that are milled .10 over to give me 10:1 compression. In take wise i'm wanting to go with a FAST 90/90 at least, maybe 102.

Budget minded id get a ls6 intake But the 90 will work great too. The ls6 cam gives a good smooth idle and makes good boost numbers, or u could get a custom one ground or a off the shelf speed inc/thunder racing cam/epp cam.

I'd like to have a pretty big cam in it. I just love that sound lol.

Do you happen to know how big the LS6 intake is off the top of you head?

Big lumpy cam specs are the exact opposite of what you'd want with a FI engine

Cam specs
http://www.smokemup.com/tech/ls1.php

GM only put two intakes on car style GEN III engines. LS1 and LS6. LS6 is worth about 30hp over a LS1 NA. With boost you wont notice much of a difference because the flow characteristics of the manifold are overruled by positive pressure. Same goes with a 90/90, any gains will be from the larger TB

Even if i got a cam that was for higher rpms?

So if i keep my ls6 intake i should be good?

If you have around 5 to 10k then sure you can do a turbo setup. Ask me how I know what its going to cost...

Why does it cost that much? What set up do you have?

There is no setup that just works for thirdgen LS swap. But a rundown

$1000 give or take for turbo hot parts
$500 to $1000 for a turbo 67mm or bigger
$200 blow off valve
$125 Wastegate
$100 Cold Side
$100 turbo oil feed and return
$600 to $700 for a tune which is not an option, the tune makes the car.
this is the bare needed plus you will more than likely need springs and cam would be nice but not needed. A fuel pump if you dont already have one. prob around 60lb injectors at the min.

Re: LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

BTW you cant have a big "lumpy" cam and a turbo setup the LSA for the lumpy sound you get do not work with the Turbo.

Re: LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

if ur set on a turbo setup id say use truck manifolds, fab up a hotside, get a masterpower t-76 with the q trim wheel, a good wastegate(tial/turbosmart/or whatever) good bov( i liked my tial 50mm msv) and intercooler and piping. and btw.... what tranny are you gonna be running?? the shortblock should be ok and id recommend using head studs since your replacing the heads anyway.

Not to mention the suspension to go along with the turbo, to even make use of the power.

Truck manifolds will not work on a 3rdgen. atleast with a stock rack it wont.

Re: LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

cam, bolt ons 150 shot is all day 600whp...

turbo would be more docile but depends on what you can do yourself. If you can fab half decent...you are in good luck and will have no problem getting a single turbo in the car. T76 Qtrim and 600whp all day long on good boost. Swap to 317 heads to keep compression down and it will live with good tune. Mild cam and those heads will still do mid high 300whp, so it wont take much to get 600whp with pressure.

keep the LS6 intake...dont need a big TB. Boost will make the power thru that just fine. I run a stock LS1 TB and made 690whp so far thru huge stall and TH400 trans on mustang dyno...trapped 142 mph in 1/4.

Re: LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

If your looking for a lumpy cam go with an EPP blower cam, sounds great and still has a tight LSA that wont bleed off boost. If your set on forced induction dont waste your money on a fast intake.

I keep forgetting the arbitrary designations out there...

It fits LS1 heads. So, what does it matter whether it's "technically" Gen III or Gen IV?

Arbitrary as you mentioned, but GEN IV gets mostly into rectangular heads that dont fit

Re: LS swap, now i need turbo, idea's?

What's your power adder budget and purpose?

Are you doing the welding?

Labor could definitely get expensive so I'm sure $5k is on the conservative side since you are going to need all the supporting mods to make and put the power down. Fuel pumps, injectors, built trans, rear end, sticky tires, etc.

As stated above 600rwhp is attainable with a nice nitrous set-up and tune.
