Re: wait for ls1 or go lt1 for now
Since when does old technology mean it cant make power? Theres people running in the 8s putting down 800+ hp with the factory LT1 block, is any of us really going to go that fast in our swapped 3rd gens? No. So why does it matter if its old? Other than wiring and fuel the LT1 drops right in a 3rd gen using same mounts, exhaust, trans, etc. The LS series is the swap that takes more work, yes its a better motor but the cost for purchasing/modding the swap and getting it in the car is no comparison.
Im not trying to knock older stuff but the thread was created to decided if he should wait to get an ls1 (which he would obviously prefer), so i was just trying to put up a convincing argument to do so.

Actually, my observations were to make sure realism remains in the discussion, not to support your argument.
I looked into both LT1 and LS1 when I was looking into replacing my ZZ4. My conclusion was I would have to spend more money on the LT1 to get it up to the same power level as I currently had with the ZZ4 than just buying a drop-out. True, I spend more on the LS1, but I believe I got a lot more in the process.
It is true you need special mounts for the LS1. Not a big deal - if you don't get it done for less than $200, you're being taken. Exhaust is a different story, because, yes, you will spend more money on LS1 exhaust in a 3rd gen platform.
Just to be clear on one point, though - start with what you want to end up with. Doing an LT1 now with plans to do an LS1 later in the same car just doesn't make any sense.

I'm doing something similar, but not for the same reason. I'm putting in the LT1 because I already have it, and I need to have the car sooner rather than later. The LS1 will wait for later, but I still plan on going to it in the future.

Re: wait for ls1 or go lt1 for now
I will be very honest with anyone else reading this though, if you are trying to decide between going to LT-1 now, and then doing an LS-1 later, or just waiting to do an LS-x later. Just wait. Do the engine you want the first time. I know I'm setting myself for a lot of extra work, and I'm not particularly excited for that, but I know I'll be happy to have an f-car to drive again just the same.
