86 Iroc LS1/4L60e Build

EDIT: Slight Change In Build... See Post #21

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok.... So I finally got around to making a build thread on here. I've got one over on LS1tech. So here's what I got... an 86 Iroc that I picked up with no motor, no trans for $400 off CL... Pretty straight body, less a few dents and dings. Interior somewhat decent, minus the headliner and the seatbelts, OH, and the steering wheel. Pretty much a fully optioned Iroc. Power windows, locks, mirrors, driver's seat. Split rear seats, rear disk brakes, overhead console, etc.

So here are my plans:

Drivetrain:
LS1/T56 Cam/Heads Shooting for 450 rear wheel
Full Suspension, Tubular K-Member, LCA's, etc (later down the line)

Interior:
LS Seats, Black Leather nothing too special

Body:
Candy Blue/White combo same as my SS
SS Style hood

still working out all of the details in my head, but you get the point.... now for the pics...

As it sat when I got it home...

Thanks!!! Yours looks awesome... you actually made me go deeper into the build just from the level of detail you put into your Iroc. You sir have raised the bar for me...

Yes, it really does... but I've found an engine/trans and rear for it, just have to find the ride from Florida.... kinda too good of a deal to pass up type thing. And yes the color will look great, it's similar, but mine is an HOK Kandy.

Well unfortunately I haven't had too much time to work on my Iroc between working on other people's cars... but I had some down time today and went out for about an hour or two and did a little bit... not much but it's progress... Here's some pics

A S***load of wires under the dash... most are from an alarm that one of the PO's had in it... wired all the way to the rear compartment in the trunk. Not sure if it worked, but whoever installed it, should NEVER install alarms in life again.... Now I may have some stuff to re-wire...

Anyone know what these relays are to?? I'm thinking it's to the door locks buuuuuuut I'm not sure... The main wires I could point out were gray/orange and gray/green. They went to a plug near the front of the driver door... see pics... any help is appreciated.

Re: 86 Iroc LS(x)/T56 Swap Build Thread

Id find another 86-87 dash harness from a JY in better shape. No way id bother with that rats nest

Neither of those relays look factory. Biggest give away is the colored tracer. Ive found 3 wires with a tracer thats not white or black and none should be under there

Loose relays in the general vicinity should be the starter relay (86 shouldnt have VATS) and fog lights (wrong colors). Id guess those are alarm related

Id say that clucth was toast too

I'll most likely get another harness from a JY as you said... I'm going to use Autometer gauges and I would like to start with a fresh un-molested harness.

I didn't think they were factory, one was a Bosch, the other was a no-name one. But I couldn't find any thing that the relays go to.

And yeah.... the clutch was paper thin, the car wouldn't even move an inch.

I was actually hoping you would chime in on this so thanks.

Re: 86 Iroc LS(x)/T56 Swap Build Thread

I've actually let this thread die for a while, I've been concentrating on opening my shop, but I am also getting ready to get back into the Iroc. I recently found an LS1/4L60E combo, It's already Cammed, Stalled, & Built for $1150... actually I got the whole car as a donor less a few body parts... so I'm probably just going to use that setup for the time being. I'll have the trans gone through before I put it in since it wasn't shifting right in the donor car, it's still under warranty so no cost to me... I also picked up a G5x4 Cam that I was going to toss in my SS but I'm debating on if I want to upgrade the 224 cam before i drop this engine into my Iroc. Possibly pick up a better stall... I just want to get the car running for now since I may not have any time later. I also came up on an Iron block LM7 from an '01 Suburban (just the shortblock, no heads) that I haven't decided what I'm going to do with yet...

The donor car has engine, trans, rear with 3.73's, interior, wiring, fans, radiator etc from an 01 SS... pretty much most of the major stuff I need... The pic below is my Iron block with my friend's LS1/4L60e that I'm swapping into his 79 Camaro...

Re: 86 Iroc LS(x)/T56 Swap Build Thread

I had an LS1 with Ported 862's 224 Cam, LS6 intake, PCM and Harness and Built trans I bought for 1150, but I sold the engine and wiring for $1700 and I'm putting that toward my shop. I still have the trans and right now I'm working on opening my shop, then I'll be back into the car... sucks because I want it running... but I have to sacrifice.

Re: 86 Iroc LS(x)/T56 Swap Build Thread

Slowly but surely getting this thing together. I plan on using the LS1/T56 out of my SS for now. The SS needs to be repainted since I'm adding some things to it, and I'm looking to build something forged with a built T56 for the SS when I pick that project back up in March.

I have a few extra dollars right now so I'm gathering parts for the swap. I just ordered the Spohn LSx/T56 Swap Crossmember. I can't bring myself to order the Long Tube headers from Hawks, BRP sells mids which I think I may buy. I plan on going Turbo later so I can sacrifice a little now. I'm going to be running the LS1 with the LG Motorsports G5X4 cam, TEA Stage 1 706's, BRP Mids, 36lb injectors, etc, etc, etc. I have a Gas tank from a 2001 SS so I'll be using that in place of the stock 3rd gen. I'll be using a 4th gen rear for now with 4.11 gears. Using a Tick Performance Master, and probably a Pro 5.0 shifter. I'll work on the body since it'll probably be more of a DD car (better gas mileage than my K5 Blazer) so it'll be in Primer Black, with 5% Tints and Black 10 Spokes until I paint it. Shooting for 450 rear wheel and High 11's to low 12's with this set up. In the meantime I'll be putting aside money for the 383 Turbo Setup that I want.

Unfortunately for me I work on other people's cars for a living, so all of my cars tend to get neglected. Pretty much the reason why I haven't made any progress on my Iroc in the past year. But I plan to get all the parts together and just swap it in within a few days or so. I can't afford to have another car taking up space in the garage or driveway. I also bought another Iroc a few months ago with a stock TPI 350 that I'm getting back into shape so nothing has my 100% attention...

Also... I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is yes, but I've got to ask will the Torque arm and LCA's for a 4th gen work on the 3rd gen with the LS swap? Haven't seen it but I'm pretty sure they should since everything else works. I have an Edelbrock adjustable TQ arm and BMR LCA's for the SS that I want to use in the Iroc.

Re: 86 Iroc LS(x)/T56 Swap Build Thread

So... I guess I'll bring this thread back from the dead... Unfortunately I don't get paid to work on my own cars, so they take the sideline. I've been putting most of my time, effort and money into opening my shop, so building up business doing "side work" even though it's my "job." Although some extra money has gone into a budget build of the Iroc. I've bought parts, and sold some, bought some more, and then changed my mind... so it comes down to this... I've changed my setup for the final time until I get it running. The Plates that I ordered "LSXTASY" were denied by CA DMV, and I don't think they'll like my next Idea too much either lol.... "GENOSYD" we'll see. In the meantime, I'm selling off the BBK Shorties and the Magnaflow Bullets and 2.5" X-Pipe Setup that I bought for it... and going with this setup:

5.3 LM7
TEA Ported 706's with upgraded valves (the ones in post #19)
ARP Rod Bolts
ARP Head Studs
LS9 Head Gaskets
Innovative LC1 Wideband
LS6 Intake
LS6 Cam
Stock Manifolds
60lb injectors
Walbro 255 Dual Intank Pumps
T56 Trans
LS1 Fuel Tank
Spohn Swap Mounts
3.42's

I intend to get it running and get it past the smog ref with stock injectors, cats, and air injection for a Smog legal swap. Then the fun begins....

I've started gathering parts, the ball is in motion, and I should be able to get this done within a month or so. The more time this car is in my garage after I pull it out of storage, the more money I lose from not being able to work on other people's cars.

Matt

Congrats on getting your shop going! I'm glad to see that you are still proceeding with your build. That's kind of silly that the DMV denied your plate. I'm sure your car will be awesome once completed. I thought I read somewhere that Cali didn't let you install truck engines in cars. Is that not true?

Thanks, still working on the shop, but It'll be open shortly. CA will not let you put in a Heavy Duty Truck Engine, but Light Duty you can, And really I'm just going to tell them it's an LS1/6Speed from an 01 Camaro. Should start to have some pics soon. And yeah I'm not sure why DMV denied the plate, but It's CA, so I wasn't surprised.
