Wet sump, that's going to be an issue w/ hard cornering, climbing/diving and rolling.

Re: This may top all our 3rd gen LS1 swaps

For decades, crop dusters have been using planes powered by wet-sump big block Chevy V8 gas engines. How is this any worse? If it has enough off-idle torque, which I suppose from the link, we have evidence that it does...
Now we can have that BowTie rumble whichever way we travel, whether by air, land or water.

Funny watching that. I bought my engine from a guy removing it from his plane.

Re: This may top all our 3rd gen LS1 swaps

That was kinda interesting to read about the website their whole gig. Does make sense on the question of cornering g-forces in the wet-sump, but that is not really considered a sport plane that would really be able topull that high of gs. Of course there is always the dry sump version they could if it did become a prob. I definatly don't wanna chance falling outta the sky due to doing whoops and having my motor lock up from oil startvation. Be kinda interesting to see.

I would be worried because the Gen III+ stuff has reverse flow oiling compared to the old sbc/bbc.

That website reminded me of a supercharged 383 LS1 that was put into a full carbon fiber bodied airplane several years ago. At the time it was just the fuselage and the engine. Don't know anymore information about it though..

WHOA. I am a licensed aircraft mechanic, and that WOULD be the ultimate swap. Although, if you think we pour big bucks into our thirdgens, try doing it with an airplane sometime...

So what? Both are rear-sump pans, though in a plane it becomes front-sump, and opposite sump pans are available for both. Both pressurize the oil, both send oil to the bearings, and through the lifters, through the pushrods, and both rely on gravity drainback. Steady, level flight is just like interstate cruising, landing is just like dropping into Denver from the Eisenhower tunnel.
Only the takeoff might be of interest. Cornering and rolling, well, the Corvette oil pan was designed for sustained 1g in every direction.

The higher your altitude, the less octane you need.

Re: This may top all our 3rd gen LS1 swaps

If I wanted an LSx plane, I'd want a turbocharged LS6.

Re: This may top all our 3rd gen LS1 swaps

I'll have to search around, there's a kit plane company that makes a 1/3 scale P-51 mustang that uses an ls1, a guy I went to A&P school with nearly baught one.
