How much to keep and how much to get rid of with a LS1 shortblock?
I found a LS1 engine with everything assembled (except the camshaft) for sale and it had 89,000 miles on it from a 98 Trans Am. I was wondering if I wanted to buy this for my IROC how much of the original parts could I keep in my Z now & how much would I have to change out to accommodate the LS1? I love my TPI but for $400 you can't beat that kind of deal for a LS1.

anything and everything engine related will have to be replaced, including accessories, brackets, wiring, ecu, etc. new exhaust will be needed forward of the cat (minimum). and a new fuel pump/regulation system.

There is a reason these are commonly sold as "drop outs", which include engine (longblock, not just shortblock, and with all accessories, intake, throttle body, fuel rail & injectors, etc.), harness, PCM, and transmission.
By the time you buy all of the missing pieces to make that engine run, you most likely could have bought a drop out for less money.
Short & sweet TPI to LS1 swap procedure:
Step 1) Remove all of the TPI engine, transmission, harness, and ECM stuff.
Step 2) Put the LS1 stuff in its place.

I got a long block with a FAST intake but no pan or accessories, harness ECM, sensors or anything. I have nickle and dimed myself to death. Get a complete pullout. I highly suggest it.

Sounds like a bare shortblock. Doesn't have heads. A few of the valve train pieces are being thrown in.

agreed, there's a lot missing to get this thing to even start. i picked up an LS1 long block for $500, but ended up grabbing a 5.3 since it had everything (sensors, harness, ecu, etc). this would be a good deal if you already had everything and wanted to work over a block without having to pull your current one

I disagree with all these guys on this one. Those blocks sell for like $1100 new, and that's just for a bare block.
They're right about also grabbing a complete truck LM7 or LQ4 to get everything else from. The LQ4 heads would be better. If you're gonna stay away from adding boost, then LQ4 heads would need to be milled about 0.025" to maintain compression.

I've got an assembled set of LS1 heads I would sell you for a reasonable price and I am local.
