Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
By the way, what is the issue with your throttle cable holder? My tpi cable works just fine with the LT1 bracket. Ill take a picture of it tomorrow night, shouldnt need to fab anything.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Thanks KillJ0Y!
Well, the only issue was that I sold the tpi cable along with the tired old 305 and didn't want to buy a new one, and I had the LT1 cable from the donor car, but it didn't fit correctly in that firewall hole. That part I fabbed is for where is secures to the firewall. I don't want the cable flopping around at all, and it flopped around quite a bit in the third gen firewall hole. I guess I'm picky that way.
Yes I thread-locked the tiny screws that hold the rotor down and will seal the heck out of the optispark when I put it back together
Yeah, when I was cutting that rotor, I had a hard time imagining the thing just shattering as it spins. The loose screw scenario makes sense as to how it could happen, though, since the base of the darn thing seems to be the weakest part.
I just figured me showing what I did might help someone soon or in the future, if they switch to the LTCC.
I appreciate your feedback!
Can't wait to have my engine finally done. Grrrr the wait

Got your pm, the main reason they shatter, is due to the bolts holding the rotor not being tight enough and then letting loose in the cap, and obviously shattering. Since i put the engine together from the start, i took the liberty of red loc-titing the rotor screws to avoid this.
I built my engine back in april-may, didnt plan on doing the LTCC until begining of sept. Right now, i really dont want to rip off the water pump, drain fluid, rent a pulley puller, pull the hub, blah blah only to re-open the opti that i sealed with silicone, to only remove the rotor.
I feel its secure enough for 6400rpms where my engine tappers off anyway. I think what you have done is a good idea, and i would have gone that route too if my opti was out to begin with. Just make sure when you put it back together, loc-tite it, then seal the cap with silicone to prevent any fluid getting in.

Hey Tim! This is the guy who bought the 4l60e off you.
Good to see your doing progress with your own LT1 swap. Good to see this build since its most likely what I will be doing later down the road after a bolt on LT1 gets boring.
Keep up the good work and keep us updated.

Hey! How's it going buddy?
Do you need the flexplate for the 4L60e? I found it yesterday In my basement when I was looking for my old lt1 timing set. I saw it and said to myself "is that what I think it is?" Yep, it's the flexplate for your tranny.
Let me know if you need it and I'll ship it out to you.
Yeah this Build/swap is going well but slow. I am hoping my engine will have enough torque to keep me satisfied for a long time. That's the goal.
There's a guy in Canada who seems pretty close to producing a kit that will allow a bolt-on installation of a whipplecharger onto the LT1.
This would be sweet

Sweet it would be. Its all just dreams for me to do this at the moment. Work really takes up alot of my time.
I don't need the flexplate though, my 97 Lt1 was originally a Auto so it bolted up perfectly. I am however having problems adapting a dust cover I got from a earlier LT1. I will make it work though.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Update: Very exciting. Right? I'm going kinda crazy waiting for my engine to be built. Seems like it'll never be done.
I sealed my optispark really well today with black Permatex. Exciting. I ordered my Taylor wires today in YELLOW, since I am going with a yellow paintjob (probably a candy yellow pearl or Lamborghini Yellow Orion). Also my correct diameter intake tube is finally on the way, and I got the right size couplings and clamps yesterday, after exchanging the wrong sized ones I ordered.
I wonder if I will get a THIRD free Summit hat...he he he.
I gotta pull the booster and master cylinder and stuff out again, so I can fit my clutch master cylinder in there whenever I get it, and I'm going to have the engine bay professionally painted by the same guys who are going to put a new passenger side quarter panel on for me. It's all cracked to heck on that side right now, and the hatch doesn't seal correctly on that side due to some accident by the P/O.
I'm gonna paint the engine block yellow or aluminum color....haven't decided yet.
I got the 4th gen BMR shroud cut at a sheet metal shop and finally started fitting my radiator and fans today. That's a polished steel shroud with the plastic protective coating still on it.
Still gotta clean the fan housings and stuff.
I cleaned the heck out of the dirty LS1 coils:
I fitted the elbow and MAF onto the intake, to see how it'll look:
Still gotta put the PCV line on the side, but Nice and CLEAN looking!
My goal is to have the cleanest or ONE of the cleanest third gen LT1 engine bays in existence.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Thanks quickkris
And thank you for serving our country! I was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1994. Been there done that.
My Dad was in the Army and got stationed in Korea back in the early 70's. He had a brand new Mach 1 with a 428 CJ, and when he got back from Korea, he found out that his car had been crushed by some large commercial truck.
Talk about a bummer!
About 8 years ago, I bought my Dad a Kimber Eclipse .45 pistol. That was a heck of a nice .45
He hasn't sent me a birthday card or gift in 19 years, since I moved out of the house. I almost kept the pistol for my darn self (I wanted to). But giving when it hurts is when it really counts, ya know. Giving that brand new Kimber away wasn't too comfy, but oh well.
I should have, at least, run a box of rounds through it, before I sent it away to my Dad.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
I have no idea
I got used to it about 15 years ago.
Maybe God caused his Mustang to get destroyed, being that God knew he would pretty much ignore me. Kind of a pre-punishment type thing he he he.
I'm not going to ignore my two sons, nor do I now. I want to build Camaros with them, if my older son ever lives closer to me, and I will for sure build a car with my new son, when he is old enough.
I want to spend time with them and make sure they know I love them.
My daughter...she's so much like her mother (my ex), and this isn't good. It's hard to be close to her, but I try. Her mother's influence doesn't help, either. Sad when you're the one who was betrayed, and the other person blames you for everything.
When I am working on my Camaro, I forget about life's sad things, ya know. I think this is why I love working on cars so much....helps me not think about sad stuff. Helps me always move forward and look toward the future.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
yeah i know my dads brought me up that way, and my sister since the divorce is very not close with him at all. do you still talk to your dad? or hes just sorta not in your life at all. its good that you want to build cars with them, my current camaro is the one my dads had for 25 years and picked me up from the hospital in after being born. i spent most of my life with my dad and hes taught me so many things that i use everyday. so is good to start your children off early so they learn and appreciate things

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Tyler that's awesome man!
I talk to my Dad a few times a year, but it's always pretty shallow.
I don't think he can handle "mushy" stuff, ya know.
I was terrified of him when I was a kid. He was violent, angry, and abusive, and he got worse after Mom left us. Growing up was not fun. I've long since forgiven him for beating the holy crap out of me when I was a kid.
I wonder where all those "child protective" people were when I was a kid. They sure didn't help me at all.
I read books to my baby boy now and make puzzles and stuff with him, and I talk to him and hold him a lot, and I decided a long time ago that I would never be abusive toward my children.
I didn't think I'd live long enough to have a family of my own.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Thanks Tyler. I try.
As I grew older, the physical beatings sort of stopped, and Dad liked to put me on "bread and water restriction."
I lived in a God-forsaken place called Pahrump, Nevada. He would lock me in a room with a mattress and a pillow (at least I had that), and he would give me two pieces of bread and two glasses of water each day.
I was thankful for what I did have, but I can tell you I know the meaning of hunger. The suckiest part was kids at school making fun of me because I was always begging for food and never had different clothes to wear each day at school.
My Mom sent me new clothes, but my Dad put them in trash barrels and burned them and made me watch. He told me he'd choke me if he saw any tears in my eyes. He choked me anyway. He'd say, "Ahh this is a nice shirt. Say good bye to it. Ahh these are nice shoes. Say good bye to them." Then, he'd burn the clothes and shoes. Then he'd choke me, even though I had no tears. Good times.
I had nothing, pretty much. I thanked God for what I did have every day, though.
I try to treat people how I would like to be treated, even if they are mean people.
Being mean to people only causes pain. Being nice to people may not seem very productive a lot of the time, but it's better than being mean to people.
This is what life has taught me.

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Wow I went 25 to 30 years and told very few people that stuff. I must trust my fellow third genners a lot!
Well, now you all know a little more about me.
Anyway, I am excited about my swap!!
It won't be as good as an LS1, but it will be darn clean and nice looking. And it won't be too slow.
And this is cool: http://www.corneltechweb.com/superchargerphaseii.htm

QUESTION:
Can I use these (the 18 and 16) for my steering box fittings? I'm pretty sure I can....just want to check with the experts on here. I am guessing 6 AN is big enough for both P/S lines.

I checked with Street and Performance. They're 16mm and 18mm. I also found a thread on here that verifies it
I just ordered the ones from Jegs. I saved $13.00 over ordering them from Summit or Aeroquip.
Sometimes Jegs rocks

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Yep, indeed. I found some cheap T bolt clamps on Silicone Intake Systems website....much cheaper than $7.85 per clamp at Summit.
I'm having a time with installing the 4th gen radiator on my car.
The dual fan housing keeps hitting the frame of the car and keeps getting pushed out of the slots on the radiator but only when the radiator is at the correct angle for the shroud to bolt it down.
I am thinking I need to bend that metal on the lower support frame inward toward the firewall....either that or cut it out. Maybe I am too picky. Oh well.

for the 4thgen radiator... i used the stock upper plastic mount.. then used the 3rdgen rubber lower mounts for it to sit on.. mine are prefect, maybe there is play in the upper metal mount you have..

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
Thanks KiLLJ0Y
The problem I am having is that when the radiator is at the correct angle, the fan assembly is pushed up and out of the tabs on the radiator because the bottom of the fan assembly hits the metal on the supporting lower bracket of the car.
I can adjust the angle of the radiator/fan assembly so that this does not happen, but then the bottom of the whole assembly hits that hump that runs across the lower support, but it only hits it on the driver's side making the entire assembly "cockeyed."
I did not think this would be such a pain, but oh well. I'll get er done.
I'm trying to find a happy medium that will work. I'll probably have to just raise the entire assembly with more rubber on the bottom of the radiator.
I'm going to use the rubber grommets from my other plastic radiator mount for the bottom of the radiator and probably some rubber spacers in addition to these.

Yeah my radiator is alittle ****-eyed too. But its not too bad to where I think it will cause cooling problems. I messed with it for awhile and finally said screw it, its fine.
You could probably raise it up alittle bit and slide the bottom forward, but your going to have to cut alittle off the coolant spout on the bottom. It hits the steering system

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
It's the fan shroud that is hitting the steering box. I got it to where there is like a millimeter of clearance there, which is fine by me. All I have to do is drill holes in the hold-down shroud and bolt it down.
Also worked on my mock up of the plate I am putting in the battery tray for my "intake filter holder piece". I'll post pics when it's done.
Got my throttle cable bracket screwed into the firewall. Used black silicone to seal it against the firewall.
I know I know....exciting!
And here is another pic of my wife, since this thread is getting boring, since I am still waiting for the engine to be done and be in my engine bay. She looks hot with or without her Summit hat

You will notice that the 4th gen spring is a little more sensitive then your stock third gen pedal pretty fast, i spin them on accident coming out on turns all the time in my stock lt1 automatic lol. Man your gonna throw down ls1 power in that thing. cheers

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
I'll be using the third gen accelerator pedal and the 4th gen clutch and brake pedals. I forgot how the third gen accelerator pedal goes back in there, as it has been over a year since I took it apart. I've been thinking about this for a while now. I'll figure it out. Can't be too hard.
Yeah, it definitely will be meaner than that old 305 Much meaner........and more fun, too.
I just want it to pull HARD, until I decide to shift
Mr. Elliott tells me, "Oh, don't worry...she'll pull HARD. You'll smile."

Got my intake plate cut today. I'm taking tylercamaro's advice and using that plate to make that corner look cleaner.
Just gotta weld a 3.5" tube into it and drill holes to mount it to the battery tray. I'm going to use a coupler for the small 45 degree elbow so I can adjust the angle of this elbow to match up with the larger 45 degree elbow coming from the MAF side. Heck I can save some money and probably cut that straight tube piece from the large 45 elbow and weld it in there, once I know where I need to cut the large elbow. Gotta wait till the engine is in to figure that out I think.
Anyway, it should look nice and should suck plenty of air.
Finally cleaned up the dogbones for the lifters, too. I can't stand the excitement ha ha ha.
Man I have boxes of different parts all over the place in my basement. Can't do a whole lot till that engine is in where it belongs.
I'm gonna go with a Tick Performance adjustable master cylinder. Still gotta order it and get my pedals and install the darn thing.

This is good stuff man. I hope that one day and can part by part re-build my engine. Just gotta make myself take it off the road for that long.

Even if I threatened him with violence he still couldn't go any faster (not that I would do that). It's either that he's swamped since he's the only builder in town (except for one other place that I've heard bad things about), or he is waiting to build mine since my heads aren't done yet.

These are the wheels I am getting. C5 deep dish. Inexpensive and the best looking wheels for our cars
Started drilling the holes in my steel radiator hold down shroud, then the Chinese drill bit I was using quit cutting
Cut my template for my aluminum cold air intake plate:

Throttle pedal guard. Doesnt do much guarding, but is hell on knuckles. Mine took a flight across the garage never to be seen again

Re: My First Ever V-8 Swap--LT1/T56 into 86 Z28
First picture you can see I finally have my aluminum coil bracket cut out! Just gotta mark where I want the holes exactly and will be cutting a bit more off before the second one is made. Then, it's polishing time.
I'm glad I swapped to the polished valve covers. Much nicer looking than flat black.
The coil harness plugs plug into the FRONT side of the coils, so I'll run the wires underneath the brackets for a cleaner look. All I gotta do now is figure out how I am going to run the plug wire looms on the brackets.
Got the holes marked and now I find that the bracket hits the breather on the valve cover. Grrr. The bracket will be 4.25 inches above the lip on the valve cover (where it will bolt to). The breather has to go bye bye.
Another angle
The solution for the the bulky valve cover breathers going bye bye I'll tap some threads into the small oil filler caps and use 12 AN fittings for breather hoses and run them to a remote breather cannister.
All I can say is that this is some hard stainless steel on my radiator shroud. Took 3 drill bits to finally get the mounting holes drilled. Nice looking piece though!!
Gotta clean that burned plastic off by the last two holes. It got really really red hot when I was drilling and the plastic protective coating melted onto the steel. The drill bits sucked and it was almost as if I got the steel hot enough to just melt the holes through the darn thing.

Slow your drill down and you wont burn up so many bits. You can use old motor oil to cool the bit as it cuts. It'll make it cut better and not overheat so fast
Do you have the adapters to run the perimeter valve covers on centerbolt heads?

Thanks for the advice Pocket. I admit I was in a hurry and didn't bother using oil and my drill is a cheapy and hard to control the speed on it.
Yep the valve covers came with the adapters and the hardware and gaskets and everything. Can't wait to see those covers shining in my engine bay!

I like that cover, Is it the one from Hawks? I wanted to run it but decided on running Champions 3 Row. Got stuck with the stock one but I believe hawks sells a cover for that too..
Good progress on the car. I will be doing this early next year as well, looks like my LT1 needs Valve seals. Still debating on sticking with the LT1 or just going LSX.

Got my power steering reservoir bracket done today. I used an antenna mounting bracket from my Kenworth at work and some aluminum stock for the outer part of the bracket. I also used various parts from ACE, too. I'm going to do the same thing on the other side of the engine bay, for my valve cover breather canister Just gotta buy another antenna bracket he he he.
I only have two 2" pieces of steel and some C-clamps to make the bends. I don't have a vice or a work table for that matter.
I failed once with the outer piece, but I got it the second try.
Antenna bracket for my Kenworth truck is in the middle there:
FAIL:
SUCCESS: It's a little flimsy, though. I'll need to make it out of steel or find a way to better support the existing aluminum piece. Or maybe I'll make the outer bracket a "T" shape instead, plus the part that is clamped between the antenna bracket is made from two rubber expansion grommet thingys with threads in the middle of them.
LOOKS PRETTY NICE:
