LS1 short block for 1k... Good deal?
Someone my cousin knows is selling a short block for 1K and it has 23k miles on it... Bone stock. Is this a good deal? should I hop on it?
Opinions? would I be better off finding a different LS1 if I go down this path?
Need to make my decision by saturday, lol.
I would imagine this would only be worth it if I could find everything else necessary on the cheap. But is this possible? Im talking sensors, intake, tranny (T56) etc... I know someone with a set of heads.
Ty all..

:/ if youve done any research u would know it was a good deal. BUT get ALL your facts strait about what hes selling. THEN research it. but assuming its a TOTAL engine and just engine its still worth it assuming all internals are in working order

I think it's a little too high. And can you verify the mileage?
My brother picked up an 01 long block for $450, sold the heads (didn't need them) sold the aftermarket underdrive crank pulley (didn't want it) and ended up with a nearly free shortblock.
bought forged piston and rods, new bearings and piston rings and had a nice fresh shortblock for about a $1000.

its not a bad deal if you already have the rest of the items to complete the engine. if this is your first piece in doing a ls1 swap i would pass. its alot cheaper buying a complete engine or parts car. ask me how i know. i didn't listen to the advise on this board and bought mine piece by piece i probably could of bought 2 complete engines with how much i spent.

Shortblock, as in no heads or intake? I'd pass...you could probably find a pull-out complete motor for $1,500-$1,800 if you keep looking.

i got a full 99 LS1/T56 dropout for 1800. for an extra 500 the guy gave me the gas tank, fuel lines, wire harness, seats, gauge cluster, radiator, and some other things. 1k for a short block is too much IMO

I paid $1000 for my motor, it came with heads and a FAST intake but I still dont know if I'd do it again. I have spent so much money piecing everything together since. I bet you I've spent around 5000 on this swap so far if not more and I am not quite done yet

I wish I kept the intakle in a way, but I traded it tok Sheldon for stock parts. The motor had no sensors or accessories or covers etc... And it had a slightly rolled cam lobe.

I'm sure the deals that have been gotten vary quite a bit among members. 2-1/2 years ago I paid $4k for a 55k mile 2000 LS1/T56, last December I paid $2k for a 87k mile 2000 LS1/4L60E drop-out.
Although the mileage on the shortblock is low and would seem to warrant a higher price, no mention has been made of the year model. The early ones, if memory serves, had flaws and weaknesses that made them less desirable. The later f-body LS1's got LS6 blocks which had more iron cast in the sleeves, along with other improvements.
Personally, I'd think piecing together a swap starting with a shortblock is an exercise in getting nickle & dimed to death. But, if you found a less expensive drop-out with higher mileage that could benefit from a better shortblock, that might be a different story.
