1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Ok so i finally got the time to start my thread on this even tho im near half way done with it but ill try to fill you in as much as possible starting from the beginning.
February 12th 2009 i picked the car up at a local Used car lot,it had been sitting in the lot for over a year and id been drooling over it since day 1.They originally wanted too much for it and didnt catch anyones interest with the price.Time and time went by and since they left the doors unlocked people were driving up in the night and playing with the car and taking stuff from the interior.
From what i was told they said someone was interested with it at a point and tried too knock the price down and they wouldnt budge,so long story short they came back the next night and messed something up on the car so it wouldnt start then went back the next day and said well now it doesnt run so we want it cheaper but they still refused to let it go cheaper.Imanaged to pick it up later on when they decided now that they were not gonna get that much for a non running car and sold it to me for 1400.This car was a steal for that price with the condition of the body for a new england car thats had abuse.
I got the car home and played with it for about a month off and on to find out that someone had pulled the dizzy out and turned it 180 degrees Fixed my problem and drove it for about 3 months.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

After that i managed to overheat and lock the motor in july that year at a local show on the burnout pad and had the car towed home.
Contacted a friend of mine that said he had an LT1 that he pulled from his maro that he said i could have because the motor was "junk" anyways, turned out to be a bad headgasket that was making the LT1 over heat.

I stripped under the hood to nearly nothing and started prepping it for some spray bomb just to make it look decent.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

I was able to get the LT1 home in my blazer along with the other 350 i had picked up that i was originally gonna use lol

Got the LT1 all stripped down to the point of which that i could practically eat off of it!

I replaced the oil pump and all the gaskets and did some paint and polish work on the intake as well.

Nah those are just some really old Eagle Alloy wheels. A fool and his money are soon parted if someone pays a grand for those wheels.

So what transmission are you going to be putting behind the lt1?

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

I contacted bruce at hawks and he said he would do up some fuel lines for me so i can get the clamped hose out of there before i start a fire. Not sure what im gonna do with the intake elbow yet but something has to change it looks horrible!
Also i think my alternator is crap, after letting the car run for a little while it will die out and wont start again til its jumped,so im hoping it may have somehting to do with my electrical issue in my gauge cluster as well but ill get to that soon.

If your interested, I have a very high quality TPI/LT1 style throttle body to 3 inch pipe rubber adapter that I was using to connect me air intake to my throttle body. It's a rubber turbo style connector. Should clean up the looks a bunch. PM me if your interested, I'm not looking for much for it since I have an LSx in mine now.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

nope the firehawk wheels are a little different but your right they are similier. The paint color is factory but it has been repainted by the previous owner, however im still unsure if the ground effx came black or silver, but im pretty sure the wing came silver from the factory as well as the vents but i dont think im gonna change anything as far as the scheme when it comes time for fresh paint.Ive gotten alot of compliments at shows even in the condition it is in,the pictures make the paint better than it really is it does have scratches and the passangers side fender has a dent too thats gotta be taken care of but i love this car much more than my previous 85.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Anyone know where these 2 vacuum lines go the come out the harness that runs in the interior? i believe there for my HVAC controls..do they just go into my intake? also there are 3 wires 1 big red one that you can see by where the vacuum lines come out and there are a couple other wires that are smaller...were these for my AC? i really dont remember..

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

All of that is HVAC related. You still need some of it for heater functions

One of the vacuum lines should be significantly longer than the other and have a strait rubber fitting on the end. This went to the heater bypass valve which you've deleted. Cap it

The other should be shorted and have a 90* rubber fitting on the end. Take this to an intake port. It controls the vacuum flappers for the ducting under your dash. Without it youll only have defrost

Leave the hardline with the cap long in case the two lines get reversed and you're stuck with defrost. Easy to switch it over then

The last two connectors are for blower control. Red is 12v battery (later cars incorporated this onto the black connector) and the black goes to your engine harness. There should be a matching connector for both. Essentially the red is 12v, the black wire grd, other wires are AC related

If you cant find these connectors PM me and ill send replacements, although they should be there

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

So today i was able to get a few more goodies for the swap, starting with Hedman headers and Y pipe and all the gaskets and a set of 4 used but in great shape 245/50/16 tires since mine are dry rotted so bad (there ready to fall off) and also some centerbolt Edelbrock valve covers that should polish up great, and all for $140 bills. ill see if i can get a couple pics in tomorrow! ill hopefully get my full exhaust on tomorrow and get a video clip on here for you guys!

Well anyways exhaust sounds sweet but ill keep it quiet for a few days before i get a good video clip.

Also wanted to know if anyone has an extra clutch clip? its that plastic clip that goes on the clutch rod that keeps it on your pedal shaft..mines busted and it keep popping off! If anyone has an extra PM me please!

Brought my alternator to the parts store a little while ago and they tested it and said it was junk...so i guess the next step is to bring her down and get it rebuilt ASAP.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Ok finally today i got back to working on this again we have been drenched with rain for the past 4 days but today was nice and i got to the junkyard and got a bunch of nik naks including a used alternator for now, some plastic fuel lines from a caprice to play with and my own distribution block cover lol

Im still having some electrical issues but my volt gauge reads nice and high now and all my gauges work ONLY if the dome light switch is on...as soon as i shut it off they go out,im very confused!! but i am getting closer.I was able to get a fan shroud finally but after bolting the fans in finally and plugging them in,they dont work...yet another problem so im not sure where to look into that next i know its not the relays becasue there is one for each fan so unless there both bad then im not sure, all fuses are good too.
If anyone has any suggestions plase speak up!

Im all set now i was able to make it work thanks tho!

I was able to get a quick clip of the car today with the exhaust on,the quality could be better so it kinda muffled the sound but you get the idea

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Ive decided that im just gonna hard wire the fans in with a switch, not my first idea but it'll work and i can make it look neat.
Tomorrow ill start on figuring out what i need to make the power steering lines and such.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Find the PCM pins that call the fan relays and tee them to ground by a toggle switch. That keeps automatic fan control along with the manual override

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

is that all the PCM does? just controls the ground on or off to make them run?

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

it grounds the relay which has a 12v constant, then you run a 12v battery hot to the switched pin and output that to the fans.

dual fans?

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

The large wires are 12v battery, but the 12v call function is fused IGN 12v

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

ok so i tried tieing into those wires A10 and A11...A10= (green) when i hook it up to a ground source will make one of my fans kick on...A10=(white) if i hook it up to a ground source does nothing but if A10 is disconnected from the PCM my tach stops working...

EDIT: wow i feel dumb im reading this over and over again thinking what it could possibly be then realized the tach wire is A13 and i snipped that rather than A10 woops my bad...i put a GRD source to A10 and A11 and both fans stay on when ignition is on.Thanks Jon.

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

I was about to get upset at a huge error on my part

http://www.lt1swap.com/pictures/100_1780.jpg

Glad it was simple

May I ask why you want the fans on continuously? The motors arent rated for that kind of run time and may burn out after a few weeks of use

Also, if A10 controls one, what does A11 control?

Re: 1987 Trans Am LTx build finally!

Haha no my mistake sorry.
when i cut A11 and put it to a GRD source only one fan came on and when i finally hooked up A10 the other fan came on (dual fans)..so they must be seperate grounds for the 2 relays.
Also im not running the fans continuously im gonna put a switch in like you said so at least if that way some one else other than me were to drive it (unlikely) then the car wouldnt overheat and the fans would just stay running with the ignition but i can still override then so ill just turn them on whenthe temp climbs past 190 or so.
