My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS
Well, just got the 6.0 for 700$, complete, had to jew and show a hundred dollar bill wrapped around a bunch of 20$s but it worked.
I can use any input and constructive criticism on this as it is my 1st LS engine and i am a mod on 2 LS sites, but i am over the SBC sections, so here we go:
LQ4 with 317 heads, i will be probably trading the heads for 241 castings so i can mill them down to get about 10.5 compression, i will be porting them myself, last set i did a rush job on a set of 317s and got them to flow 270 CFM at 600.
Ca, i am looking at is a 288 HR comp copy, 236/242 duration @.050, 112 LSA and .580/.590 lift.
Intake will be a Vic Jr. with a MSD 6LS box. I have purchased my first ever lap top just for this, LOL.
Probably will be building my own headers if i dont just modify some big block chevy headers with the LS flange.
I bought a T56 from a F body with a Centerforce DF clutch and Hays flywheeel.
I will be setting the rev limiter at 6600 in hopes the rod bolts will not let go.
Will be manual steering, WP and Alt will be all that is on the engine, so i will be shooting for 450 RWHP.
My goal is 6.99 in the 1/8th at 100 MPH or so, i know i can get close to it, but if i hit that goal, SWEET.
Rear is a Moser 12 bolt with 4.30 gears and the current ET streets i have are 26x11.5x16, so i think everything is there in order to get what i want.
Then, i will have the 150 shot on top of that for fun.

I will have a manual steering box for sale shortly. It's an S10 box, apparently they're worth some money. It came in the '89 IROC-Z that I got my dad, and he wants power steering.

No, but i will be trying to have about 10.5 to make it easier on spray, being on the raggedy edge of pump gas makes it hard to spray, but i will also be injecting a separate mix of race fuel in with the N2O and i have access to Nav gas for the primary tank to also help take the edge off.

You ripped the seller off by wrapping 20's with a $100 bill? I would say thats rotten but if the seller actually fell for it without counting the money then maybe he deserves it.

No, you misunderstood. It was 700$, but money talks, he wanted more. a 100$ bill wrapped in 600$ more in 20s ,makes people say yes VS 7 100$ bills. LOL, you gotta play the game, these guys at the wrecking/salvage yards usualy pay 800-1000$ for the wrecked trucks, i have no problem jewing them down as hard as i can

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS
So...did yours run? Mine has nearly everything and it is a running engine. Othert han hat i see them gor for 700$ as a long block with no coils or anything.
Not to mention i sold some old stuff i wasnt using, so i am not exactly out of pocket.
They go for 1300$+ on Ebay in the condition mine is in.

i'm excited that you are finally going to go with an lsx. i think you'll be amazed by the easy power they can make.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS
Trust me, it is no surprise, all my friends have a LS powered car. I just was against the grain till recently. It WAS the original plan but a BBC vs LS conversation ensued me trying to do the BBC, but i give up since i cannot make it happen quick enough.
So, less cubes and TQ, but the way the power curves are is what makes up for it. Not to mention, i dont have to look for heads. I find that any stock LS head can flow 300 or so, what SBC head can do that out of the junk yard for a decent price fro a home porter like myself.
I will be going with the LS3 head design when they make the carb intake to match it, but for now, i am on this mission.
Still looking for a bit smaller cam, but at the right price. I like the Torqer V2 but i need a bit bigger and the comp 288 grind is a tad too big. But i would rather use the 288 when it comes down to it.

it probably could have, but it had sat out in the weather. bearings and cylinder walls looked perfect. like i said, i was looking for a garaunteed rebuildable core, which is definitely different situation.

For at least 18 months now LKQ has been selling complete LQ4s, with coils, for $800. And even that is unfairly high. At least in my case it included shipping it up here from Cali to my local LKQ. It was just as complete as your first pic here.
317s already flow about that, stock, so your porting numbers aren't impressive. I'm doing #241 heads on my LQ4, for compression reasons. Go pick up the latest issue of Car Craft magazine, it has flowbench results for un-ported LQ4 heads.

Re: My 6.0 swap in my 89 RS
Well, to compare, we took my buddies 79 malibu to the 1/4 last friday,Mods:
99 6.0, 317 with a slight port job by me(bowl blend and clean up, torqer V2 ca, 232/234 @.050, LQ4 pistons, heads were milled to get 10.5 or so, Vic Jr intake with Demon vac sec 650 carb. TH350 with 3500 stall, 3.73 gears. Car weighs 3240 without driver.
1.7 60 foot (previous best 1.8)
7.4 @ 95 mph (previous best 7.3 @ 96 with 3.42 gears)
11.58 @ 117
So, with that being said, there is more left on the table, the weather was nice and cold, so it should have done better or as good as it has.
The 1/4 mile from the 1/8th time told me it is losing 30 HP or so, i think it is not getting the fuel it wants. Trapping 117 from 95 in the 1/8, a 22 MPH gain and it should have been a 120 or so. Funny thing it, we had the best ever 60 foot with the new 3.73 over the 3.42 but we were .10 slower in the 1/8. Something in the tune is not right, but we only made 1 pass, so the truth is there is allot left in the car, i think it has 11.0 in it.
So, from that, that is why i want the slightly bigger cam, port the heads a bit more, and i have a deeper 4.30 gear and i want to shoot for 10s

Well, found a cam for the LS that is made for the single plane carbed guys like myself:
Intake Duration: 236 Degrees at .050" Tappet Lift.
Intake Lift: .615" with 1.7 rockers.
Exhaust Duration 248 Degrees at .050" Tappet Lift
Exhaust Lift .615" with 1.7 rockers.
108 Degree LSA
A bit bigger than iwanted but it will sound bad *** and run its tail off.

Where are you guys located in Houston? I am in Katy and plan on doing a third gen ls3 with a turbo and blow through carb set up later this year. Do you guys go to any local car shows or hangouts like "Nifty Fifties" or "coffee and Cars". I know there is another 3rd gen ls1 car in town that was built by Hawk. We should start a regular get together.
