LS1 PCV Catch Can
I keep hearing about high PCV oil entrainment with LS1's. The two remedies seem to be LS6 valley cover or a catch can.
I haven't looked into it a lot, but the catch can seems to cost about the same as the LS6 valley cover, without the issues the cover can lead to.
So, who's running what? Or, do you just let the PCV be your top cylinder lube system?
I know a 2001 SS owner who bought this http://www.mikenorrismotorsports.com...atch_Cans.html (the "deluxe" model).
I haven't looked into it a lot, but the catch can seems to cost about the same as the LS6 valley cover, without the issues the cover can lead to.

when i was running my 5.3 with every mod available along with a 175 shot o nitrous i was having this problem. i ran these people cans and it helped greatly.

A friend of mine removed the entire PCV system and is now running a small breather filter on the passenger side valve cover. It looks real clean and simple.

That's not a good idea. The vapors will never be evacuated from the crankcase, acids will build up, not good.

That's what some people have told him, but he and some others on tech have been running it that way for some time without any issues. I'm not saying I would necessarily do that, but it is an option.

I started out just running a filter and not hooking anything up for the PCV system.
What happened during high rpm pulls is oil would be pushed out of the filter.
Without the PCV system hooked up, the motor will develop blowby, losing compression, etc due to the crank case pressure.
I hooked up a catch can and the motor seems happier with it that way. Definitely pulls harder up top, thats for certain.

So where did you get your can from? I'm going to use one, but no way am I going to spend that much money on one. I'm thinking $30 MAX, a simple plastic tank will do the job just fine.

Im running the LS6 valley cover...but it was ingesting a lot of oil. So i switched to a breather filter and capped everything else off. This caused terible oil vapor smells... my clothes stink after a long drive, and it cant be good to breathe in.
So my next step will be a catch can. Ive decided that a tiny bit of oil in the intake isnt the end of the world. Ide rather have a good vent system and no stink. Im going to go with the Rev-Extreme can. Saikou Michi also makes a great can. You get what you pay for. Stay away from the cheaper, smaller can setups. The "home depot catch can" doesnt work for crap. Too small. I dont care what anyone says.
Hoping this sovles some of my issues.

(This might be a dumb question, but here goes anyway...) Does anyone know if that's still an issue on the newer engines (say '05+ or so)? I know that the same principles apply, but I haven't even started thinking about what I'll do for the PCV system yet. My engine is an '08, if that matters...

I was given a can, so I have no idea what it cost new.... or even who made it
It did come with a nice mounting setup though, and I spent about $20 since the only room I had was on the DS fender lol
Ghettocruiser reminded me of the 'smell' and why I wouldn't drive my car to work. If I can smell the oily exhaust type odor, I'm sure my patients could too....

Hmmm I dont know if its because I ended up with a cherry engine or what but I've been running the breather in the great white North i might add. Three seasons now and no issues or complaints at all. It never leaks oil, I dont smell anything ever, Once a year just like my K&N air filter I wash it and thats it. Worry free as I see it. I dunno this is one issue that escapes me for all the others I see having trouble with it.
Also FWIW I run the Castrol 0W30 oil and only change it once per season. Its gets almost 10k miles per year and I hit the 7K limiter frequently and again.. No issues.... It doesnt use any oil really either so maybe thats part of it. By the end of the season Im down 3/4 liter and thats it

Its terrible. Not to mention oil DOES come out of those filters during high rpm...and even lower in the rpm range. So its a bit messy.
Haha...to combat both issues, I put in a sealed breather, with a 5/8" nipple. I then used 5/8" heater hose and routed it all the way up to the front of the car. I zip tied a coffee cup into the fender, shoved in some paper towels, stuck the hose in, and finished it off with a bunch of dryer sheets. It worked...for about one day. Then started to stink again haha.

I wonder it has anything to do with engine year? Mines a 99... I think. All I can tell you for sure is the PCM and harness are from a 99 as I bought this engine already yanked out

I used a universal catch can I bought from ebay for like $30 shipped...Its chrome and looks nice and it does the job...every oil change the can has a little bit of oil in it and I clean it out....

I learned a tremendous amount from this thread. It seems that all catch cans are not created equal, and in many cases the $30 ebay jobs may not provide much if any benefit over the stock PCV.

I frequent ls1 tech a lot myself and there are a few guys here that have the ls6 valley and still have issues with it getting oil into the intake. One of our guys had oil on the face of his throttle body after a couple of strip passes! From what i can gather, this catchcan is probably one of the better out there.

Im building an ls1 for my car, and ive read just about every catch can article(not saying i know it all) and some of the bigger power guys have pointed me at this one, although most of em chop off the tubes and run 90* brass fiting to clean it up a bit.

I havent had any problems with the ebay one and it does catch the oli... My ls6 intake is clean in the inside.. Not saying this is the right route but if you only have a cam then go for it but for bigger applications like cam, heads, and turbos then go for a better one.
