LSX CAI solution?

i haven't been able to come up with a good solution. my first attempt was a mix and match deal using part of a CAI from an lt1 camaro and some ABS pipe, it looked terrible, and i know it wasn't going to flow well later when the engine grew up.

the second attempt is 4" mandrel bent steel tubing, which as you'd guess, heat soaks like crazy. even with the air filter completely isolated from the engine bay, i still see IAT's in the 105-115* range. TOO HOT.

so, the question becomes, what is everyone else doing? have you had a scanner on it while cruising to see what your temps are? what kinda numbers are you putting down through said intake? any help is seriously appreciated!

I did that for some time but I used the pcv pipe cost maybe 6 bucks. I seemed to get good temps just a tick above outside air. but now that I am using my hood it is amazing what the air temps are.....COOOOL. I would sugest doing something with your rad setup Matt, no matter what you run if it is sitting on the rad hose it is going to get heat soaked.

Have you tought about converting to the 4th gen style rad to get the hoses located in diff spots. Just a idea.

4" aluminum tubing through some elbows and what not. Amsoil filter. I moved my IAT sensor because it was getting heat soaked where it was. Just a couple inches so it wasnt right next to the head. The alum tubing does decent with heat transfer. I might wrap it someday just for craps and giggles. I also had to leave room for my fuse boxes, otherwise I might have made the "downpipe" opening in a different spot.

I see ambient air temps until I sit in traffic for a long time. Then I think the filter is just picking up hot air coming from the tarmac, as well as from under my hood. It doesnt get anywhere NEAR as warm as it used to though. And as soon as I move a little it drops right back down.

As for numbers... I got about 340 at the wheels with 2 complete clogged injectors haha. That probably doesnt help you. Not sure when Ill have new numbers, as money is alittle tight right now. But the tuner liked the set up, and it breathes great. Ive driven in the rain a bunch, some really hard rain, and havent seen any signs that its picking up any water.

Re: LSX CAI solution?

Apparently an LS2 GTO cai kit will work perfectly. I've seen a picture of a car with that in fact I think it was the orange IROC-Z that's for sale in the marketplace. It looks sweet.

Or, here's a make-it-yourself kit that looks good too. The person that showed me the pictures has the parts list and he's going to email it to me so I can post it up here:

Re: LSX CAI solution?

Summit or Jeg's sells orange 3" and 4" Neoprene? hose for routing cooling air to the front brakes. Sounds ideal.

intakehoses.com

They've got silicone and rubber. Just about any parts you could possibly need. Good pricing, reliable shipping, and quality stuff. Its where I got all my stuff. Clamps and all.

Re: LSX CAI solution?

excellent. i think a good combo of aluminum pipe, and rubber elbows will help keep the IAT's down.

Re: LSX CAI solution?

If you want to take extra steps, go ahead and wrap the whole setup with header wrap or the heat wrap of your choice. Certainly wont hurt anything...might make it look less clean, but if keeping IATs down as low as possible is what you need, then go for it.

Re: LSX CAI solution?

For years I've run the same type of setup as pictured in the posts above, & have never noticed any problems. I've wrapped mine with some fairly inexpensive matte black insulating wrap (with an adhesive backing) that I got from Lowe's, & it's seemed to keep the heat down. And like Justin said, water's never been a problem.
