where to buy ls motor??
I'm overwhelmed. I want at least 450 whp, and prefer 500 whp. There are so many people selling crate engines. Besides, there are the take out engines like l92 and ls3.
I like the ls376/480 from gmpp, but would like slightly more power. I would probably prefer iron block for strength, but it seems unneccessary at this low!! hp level.
I am tempted to get a crate motor, turn key, so i dont need to mess with it too much, but if i could save thousands by using a take out motor i am willing to do it. But what should i add to an ls3 or l92 to get my 500whp?
Or, where should i buy a crate motor, and which one should i buy. I am bewildered with the ls1,2,3,6,7, l92,l76, etc. Do i need any of the 4th gen improvements,, or should i be souping up an ls1?
I have seen forged motors, lsx, and ls3, for around $10,000, with 525-600 crank hp. I am tempted to buy one. But which one? And am i wasting my money? i still will need headers and a t56, and accessories kit, and the 3rd gen swap parts.
Any ideas appreciated. i would like to have a stock appearing gta for under $20,000 with 500whp and a/c, cruise, and quiet exhaust.
I can do the work myself if needed
Another idea...
A nice take out motor, ls2, or ls1, etc, and a turbo setup with ic. I am in nyc area, and willing to give a shop 10k if they could provide a motor and turbo to give 500 whp pump gas.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
I just got an 01 LS1 motor with an LPE GT2-3 Cam. Was completely done by LPE and it has 22K miles on it. A friend of mine swapped it to me for some other parts. I had intended on putting it into my 91 Firebird Formula..but just learned that these cars are more on the rare side, so with 50K original miles on the TPI motor I am deciding (I think) not to do it. So I have this motor which has the LS6 intake on it and it is the 01+ block..so it is the newer block that was re-cast with the windage holes to promote better crank case breathing between bays. I has a Corvette Oil Pan, Water pump, pulley, Alt bracket, Alt. Fuel Rail/Injectors, and most of the sensors.
Although the long block is assembled, I have a set of AFR Dual Valve Springs and a Katech Ported LS6 oil pump....also have the 01 PCM.
If you are interested let me know as I thinking about getting rid of it. I can take pics and send them to you..it is still on the pallett, is clean, all I did was unwrap it to inspect.
Motor dyno'd at 380 rwhp with this sleeper cam (barely bigger then the 02 LS6 Cam). It doesn't burn oil my friend told me it was a very strong motor and was/is in perfect shape...he was just dropping in a larger motor (LS3) into his C5 and pulled it. This is why it has a lot of the parts already (not just a long block).
I have been watching LS6 heads on Ebay go for $499 fully assembled. If you put LS6 heads on this block it would make 400whp (est) with the current cam. If you went for a nasty cam like one of the LG cams...you could make up to 470 rwhp with this setup.
See link for pics.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Getting 500+ horsepower out of one of these new engines just isn't that tough any more. Here's one "recipe" for doing that, it's actually the article that made me realize that the AFR-headed Gen-I 383 that I was building would just never be what I really wanted (it actually got me started on my current build)...
I think that you can do at least as well using EFI as they did by using a carb, but there will be a number of people who'll hotly dispute that. Either way, anything even NEAR 500 hp in one of our cars is going to be really respectable...

I found mine locally (actually right down the road from me) by keeping an eye on LS1tech. Only took me a week!

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Not everyone has the space to buy a complete car. And some, like myself, dont want a junk car sitting in the yard. Plus I just dont have time to part a car out. I think the OP has a legitimate question.
Are there any places, other than egay stores, to buy pull out motors? Ive been keeping an eye out, and have found a few deals, Im just not ready to spend the money yet.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
what's the difference between ebay, craigslist, ls1tech and any other vendor online that sells a pull.
Most vendors sell pulls both out of their website an on ebay at the same time and they all come from the same place. Wrecked insurance cars.
Tell you what since you don't want a junk car in your yard. You can give me the $3000 the 99SS donor car I bid on went for today. Now granted the 3K will only get you the pull, I will then proceed to sell the SS hood for $400, the SS spoiler for $200, the wheels for $300, the seats for $300 the t-tops for $75, the rear end for $175 etc etc etc, but hey that's all ANY of these "vendors" do.
There's a Ws6 on ebay I watched go across the auction last month. Idiots on ebay bid it up to $5900. It's fricking wrecked!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ponti...fCarsQ5fTrucks
You can buy a high mileage unwrecked LS1 for that.
I don't know which is worse. The idiot bidders who are willing to pay that or the idiot seller who I watched pay a couple thousand less when he bought the car to flip a month ago and is still to greedy to not take $5900. If I knew people were that stupid I would have bid more on it.
Screw it i'm going to call myself a vendor.
Pulls are $3000-3500+freight unless you pick up, depending on miles and auto vs manual. I'll even reflash vats and emission codes out before shipping!
Whole cars are $5900 if you believe ebay. Who's in?
I'm ready to be self employed so one at a time, single file line please.

So your telling me for $3-3500 youll get me an LS1/t56, with harness and computer? (of course I did catch the shipping thing too) Out of a 99 SS to boot?

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Did you check the pics of the motor that I have for sale. It has far less miles than most pull outs and was out of an LPE car...low miles...no oil burning...late model LS1 means the same as LS6 minus the heads. Plus I have the Katech ported oil pump and AFR dual valve springs to go with it. Check out my thread in the Parts for Sale section.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Haha, good luck with that, in my area anyways. You'll never see an LSx powered car in a junk yard with the drivetrain still in it. Either the person who wrecked the car was smart enough to buy it back from the insurance company, someone else bought it from the insurance company, or the junkyard pulled the drivetrain out before it hit the yard to sell it as a pull-out at a mark-up on ebay or something. They usually get sold within hours of being posted on Craigslist up here in St Louis.

i've sold full ls1/auto pullouts with all the goodies for $1500...whats your point? mileage tends to make a big difference in price. i could sell people motor.trans combos on here all day for under $3k, there just gonna have 150k+ miles on them.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
If I was personally doing an lsx swap, Id try to find a wrecked 4th gen ls1/t56 and take the whole thing. It gives you easy access to anything you would possibly need of a donor car for an ls motor, t56 trans and even the rear end if its an upgrade in your case. The rest of the car can get parted out to make some money back and sell the shell for a couple hundred bucks scrap when youre done. If you found a good deal on a nicely wrecked one, you could come out pretty well financially in the end.

Just so you know there is a shop in North Jersey called TTP Performance. They do some nice work and have a lot of experience with F-Bodies. You could always call them to run some ideas by them.

Why would you buy a pullout from me? I thought you could get a better deal on a pullout buying the car and parting it out as you had stated in posts above.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
But also frankly I don't believe you can produce a 99+ls1/auto/pcm pull with ~150k on it that runs normal and doesn't have a slipping tranny.
(this is not to imply ls1's don't run great to 200K+, this is simply to say knowing what the prices are out there even the higher mileage donor ones go for more then this as complete cars if they start)
For $1500 it's not worth my time to part out one and I also don't see you producing one as there wouldn't be enough profit in it to make it worth your time.

I wasnt laughing at you. I was just smiling at the fact that I am really thinking about swapping my 4L60e for a T56.........and this thread came up so the smiling
If you say that you have sources like andrew does....LMK ..... I have already talked to a few members on here.
In your experience how much does a T56 setup vs a 4L60e setup sell for?

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Ill say this. Ive been putting off buying an engine in hopes of the price coming down enough so I can afford it. I dont have an extra $5k to spend on a car that runs just fine. Hell Ive tried blowing up the L03, the sucker just keeps laughing at me.
My point is this, most people cant buy a wrecked car, either for space reasons, no license or connections, or even home owner rules. And when you shop the normal pull out vendors, they arent stupid. They know they can get $5k+ for an LS1/T56. There is the occasional deal on LS1 tech, and Craigslist, and maybe youll know some guy who dated a girl who knows a guy who wrecked a car, and is parting it, but all in all, the average person cant get a deal much better.
Im working my butt off trying to come up with $3k. If the engine runs, has good oil pressure, and all the parts and accessories, and comes with a t56, ecm, and harness, Im in. Ill work out the details on the other odds and ends later.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
And I can't figure it out.
There's high mileage cars that are destroyed and people will bid the crap out of them and then I've seen other better cars go for 3K.
There's a lot of other factors too. Like one car might be an auto but it has a ws6 hood so maybe the guy is bidding higher knowing he can recoupe $400 from the hood where as the manual car is a base car with cloth seats.
Same with a 01-02 car someone might bid more because of the ls6 intake.
At the end I can find no distinction between just auto vs manual prices.
A lot of times I don't think there is logic involved. It's fast paced bidding like you'd expect at any auction. You don't have time to think it over so I guess a lot of people get caught up in the moment and do an impulse buy.
To be honest I've seen the best deals on ls1 tech and craigslist from a private seller so don't feel like your missing out.
Want to know another fun fact. You wouldn't believe how many of these cars are bought to ship oversea's to dubai etc. Those guys bid on a ton of stuff, usually our classics. Watched a nice 72 camaro go for $8K to one of them.

Re: where to buy ls motor??
there is a company in bristal PA New Jersey that sells on the net under F-Parts Google it and go to there ebay web site they have ls1 motors for sale in that price range. if you do a little reseach on that motor the 2002 f-body motor is the best and can easly be bumped up to 450 rwhp and thats with out a turbo. some of the 02 motors were ls6 with the heads and cam down sized to keep the hp down I suggest you do a little reseach on that motor

Re: where to buy ls motor??
Well since that $1500 pull never came to reality, I just bought an entire 2000 z28 for $1500 instead.
Drove it down the road and on the trailer.
Before anyone calls BS. pics of it and all the ls1 cars I've gotten cheap.
