Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
I have the car back all to myself for the first time in a long time. Looking to get an adjustable panhard bar in this week and set up an appointment for a four wheel alignment with all the new parts in.
Next task is the stumbling issue im having around 3k rpm and super long crank times to start the motor. Need to diagnose better but im leaning towards leaking injectors and icm as probable culprits.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Since the last post I've gotten aligned to 5 caster, -1.6 camber, and 0 toe.
And just today I got my seats swapped out from the old sparco siennas that were putting my head above the roll bar and into the t-tops.
They are Sprint V buckets. Pretty tight but they are better than the previous ones.

Thought it would be nice to check in this summer. Home and enjoying my car for the last time before I graduate college and ship out with the Navy. Out of time and money to really keep working on her, but she's running great as is. Might replace the fuel pump and/or O2 sensors to try to address the stumbling.
Cheers,

Haven't had it to the strip yet. Havent had a chance to autox either, which was my main goal for the car. Fairly disappointed about that, but real life happened to me in many ways and I haven't had a good opportunity.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
working on wiring in the ALDL port that I never installed before since I have a CEL on. Perhaps it will give me some direction with cleaning up my stumbling issues- I really have no excuse since the ALDL is only 3 wires....
A: Ground
B: D20 is service enable/output
M: D30 is serial data
Edit: Just finished cleaning up some pcm wiring and adding the ALDL port so hopefully by the end of the week I will have time to run over to advance and use their scanner to grab some codes.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Ran into trouble finding a place in state college that can scan obd1 codes- cant do the paperclip trick on the 95 pcm, so I ordered an OBD1 to usb cable and software to get my laptop into the mix.
Will post when I pull the codes and see whats going on.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
So...
After much cursing and general unease I have tunerpro RT set up to datalog in the car, and I have a working speedometer!
The OBD1 connector I bought from red devil river LLC and it works great (55 dollars).
For the speedo, I had tried multiple times to diagnose why it was not getting any pulses from the vss sender. After all but giving up, I decided to replace the VSS sender yesterday.
Got the new sensor installed, no dice.
So I pulled the PCM back out and started checking continuity on my wires. Oddly enough, both of the wires from the vss were showing up as grounds. So I snipped the piggy back wire that I had tapped into the signal and run to the gauge cluster, and suddenly I had a vss signal on my laptop.
I pulled out the gauge cluster (huge PITA with all the wires) and traced the vss wire I had run, and it appears that it was sandwiched between two pieces of metal in the dash frame and completely stripped/pinched. So there was my mystery ground on the signal wire. Ripped it out, ran a new wire under the dash from the PCM to the gauge, and everything works!
It may sound anticlimactic but I have had the swap running 3 years now and never had a speedometer :P

Finally stopped raining here and I drove the car out for some errands.
Heres a little clip of the car on the road- you can hear the hesitation right after I turn out onto a main road and shift into second :/

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
I finally finished the swap for real last weekend when I replaced the fuel pump and sending unit while I was home for fall break.
Fuel gauge works, rail pressure is 40 psi, and the motor is happy. Every single issue I have experienced since getting the motor running disappeared with the new pump. Wish I had done it sooner, but you live and learn a little bit.
I was in a hurry but did manage to snag a short video clip of the car driving right after the install was finished. Please excuse my horrible missed shift o.O

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Been a while since I last checked in, and lots has happened in the interim. Graduated from college, commissioned in the Navy, and moved to Washington D.C.
I am looking to get some serious work done to the car in the next few months so I thought I should get back on TGO- it will remain relevant to the LT1 swap as well as I will likely be replacing the entire exhaust system top to bottom, and documenting fit/parts with the T56 and hawks double hump crossmember.
Also about to buy a sparco wheel to finish the interior off. I made door panels from scratch over the last few visits I've had with the car (since it is currently still in PA).
Final product:
While I was in the doors I replaced both window motors, deleted the power locks and all other superfluous gear, and installed new exterior handles.
I am looking into quotes on body work, paint, weatherstripping, and more...

This car still makes My jaw drop
Good to see you are also in my neck of the woods now, we have a decent sized group in the DMV area that meet up and cruise to some local tracks, are you a part of MM already?

No but I have some friends who are- since I don't have the car down here yet I really haven't taken the time to ask around and get involved. Sometime soon though.
Also hoping to make some auto-x at Fedex before season end in october. I will get steamrolled in C-prepared though

New steering wheel and adapter are on the way
The cheapo wheel on there now is coming undone and generally wont last.
http://www.sparcousa.com/product/l575
That should pretty much finish the interior

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Steering wheel made a huge difference in driving feel since it is so solid compared to the old one.
Also managed to replace a reverse bulb that was out this weekend, and more importantly, hook up my heat/air blower and controls to power and sort it out- everything is working!
A little bad news however; went driving today and overheated, sprayed steam all over the engine bay from the water pump. Turns out my fans werent running at all, and i have some melting going on in the fan relay socket. Wasnt able to sort it out, but i pulled the relay and jumped the fan power wire to the battery to drive home. I supposed I have some digging to do next time I work on the car, I am considering just moving to a manual fan switch if it becomes too much of a pain.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Went in and spent some time mounting my PS reservoir. It has been flopping around on one self tapping screw for a few years and I finally got tired of it.
Also installed a pair of hella supertone horns up in the empty space under the hood latch and ran all new wiring/relay up to the column and horn button:
Going to drive up to PA to work on the car again this weekend- ordered a 1/2" NPT tap and plug for the LT1 water pump oil cooler fitting- discovered that the coolant leak I have is from the freeze plug I had in there which was deformed after I overheated. Going to tap it and plug it with some red loctite and never worry again.
Also going to take care of re-wiring my fans; this time using 2 relays and with a manual over-ride switch in the dash.
Should also be able to drill out the bolt I sheared in the hood and get the underside of the hood cleaned up and painted black.
And installing the SFI roll bar padding I need to be SCCA legal.
Hoping to have a productive weekend.

Finally replaced the rubber freeze plug in my water pump with a real plug. 1/2" NPT stainless plug, took a little while to tap it out and had to drain the coolant, but should be nice to not worry about it ever again.
Also re-wired my fans from top to bottom this weekend with 2 relays and 12 AWG wire throughout. I have a dash switch as an over-ride, and a thermal switch that I put in the pass. side head between ports 6+8 where a plug was installed from the factory (195 deg on, 185 deg off).

Decided to make some serious changes and just ordered a C5 brake conversion from www.bigbrakeupgrade.com
Absolutely cannot wait. Going to take the opportunity to install a new LS1 master cylinder and my wilwood proportioning valve I have had on the shelf for a few years.

Spent most of the day cleaning the underside of the hood for paint. Steel brush took the grime and paint off without removing the factory primer- go figure. Left what should be a great surface for painting.

QTP E-cutout. Going to put the toggle switch in the center console to replace the rear hatch release switch between the window switches.
New C5 brakes, calipers powdercoated, new hubs and all that jazz.
Borla 3" catback (#14888) with angle cut tips ready to rock and roll.

I'm in the process of a similar swap, and was wondering what hose you used for the brake booster. It looks as if it's a molded hose is why i ask.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
I can't remember exactly where I got the brake booster vacuum hose from- I think I bought it from a member on here with some other parts.. I will think on it and let you know if I remember, although if you can read it you may be able to pull the GM part number from the picture I posted.
Another full weekend of work..
Pulled the master cylinder back out to bench bleed as the pedal was a bit spongy, and reflared and replaced one of the fittings going into the proportioning valve that was dripping after the test drive.
Also removed the entire old exhaust setup and headers, and spent some time getting the new shorties in. Had to move some brake lines around on the drivers side, and I re-routed my starter wiring between the motor and k-member inside the motor mount on the passenger side to get it out of the way of the primaries.
Headers are Dyno Don's 1 3/4" primaries with 2.5" collectors. Next to do is mock up the Y-pipe (2.5" into single 3"), get it welded, and install the Borla catback/electric cutout.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Welded dyno don's y-pipe and got it fit up on the car. O2s fit perfectly, everything clears and tucks up extremely well. Very, very pleased with his work.
Have the muffler and tips hung, just have to run the intermediate piping to get the front to the back and we are ready to roll.
The QTP electric cutout is in there as well and the wiring will run into the spare tire area then forward to the center console.
Cheers,
Steven
