Any progress with this? Really sucks you spent so much on the fuel system for it to fail you now.

IT LIVES!
god this is the best feeling in the world.
ill get the video up later. put the stock regulator on and checked the injectors, no luck, everything was sealed, so i called up one of my dads friends who builds vettes and he said crank it, it will clear the air out of the gauge if there is any, and the pressure popped right up to 42 after it turned a few times

Congrats, mine breathed life today too for more than the 10 seconds VATS would let it run lol. Registering the car tomorrow, just bleeding the brakes tonight and she's ready. Enjoy her, you won't be disappointed.

with an Opti timing is computer controlled and you need to either know how to tune it, or take it to a dealer or service shop who can
Correction on my Part, skip back to page 9, i think it was post #419 that shows the plug wires going to the opti behind the water pump

You should post it on Youtube. Facebook won't let me see the video.
Also, where do you put the power steering fluid into now? I was prepping my LT1 to be pulled, and I couldn't see a reservoir....it's just a small pump held in by two bolts. I am guessing you now have to fill it right at the steering box, but I could be wrong.
Glad you got her started!!

Also, what is up with the three extra nipples on the water pump? I am guessing the two on the passenger side are for the heater hoses, and I don't know why another smaller hose goes from the driver's side small nipple into the radiator.

LT1s have a seperate resevior. If I had pictures on this laptop I could post them to show you. The resevior sits right next to the pump on the body.

That is a bummer that you had to dent a new header for it to fit. Hopefully, it didn't need much of a dent.
and dented the header to fit drivers side. im going to work on pulling the starter and fitting the passenger side tonight!

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
This is why I am going with shorties--but long tubes are nice for performance I've heard. Actually, I had to dimple one driver's side header tube on my other 350 IROC because it was against the steering linkage rod just enough to make the steering system catch and feel funny--drove me nuts, so I heated it and dimpled it.
QUESTION: what is that vacuum line going to by the driver's side headlight and underneath the car? I figured I didn't need it thinking it is part of the cruise control apparatus.
I pulled that large vacuum line (with the rest of the wiring harness) that goes from the brake pedal switch to the cruise control vacuum diaphragm/can thing.
Also, I am wondering where to hook that tube-line that comes out of the HVAC harness--I guess I hook it to any vacuum source?? I assume it's a vacuum line.

There is a HVAC vacuum hookup location on the passenger side of the intake, similar to the older TPI systems, towards the middle.

Very nice!!! I think your face goes to show... that feeling is a hard one to beat. I did a tear down/fab/rebuild on my first bike... and that feeling is hard to beat. Similar to your situation here, too... I'd only ridden it for an hour or so before I had to tear it apart.
Congrats

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
tonight i backed it out of the garage for the first time and idled it in the driveway. I waited for some of the paint to burn off the headers, topped off the coolant and power steering...
also routed my PCM wiring through the stock hole in the fender so it isnt hanging out the side of the car. Ran the power wire and mounted the fuse for my amplifier so my subwoofers can see some action soon
i was really nervous putting it in reverse the first time, it kept grinding and popping back to neutral, so i slipped it into first and rolled forward a bit, then reverse was smooth... weird but its fine now. also the heater blower didnt turn on when i tried to use the controls inside... oh well. a bit of troubleshooting to do i suppose.
everything is coming together nicely, i just really need to fix my brake line leak in the rear. Once that is done i can hit the road. Ill probably stop by DMV this weekend to try and get antique plates and at the very least temporary tags.

I see everything came together fairly nicely. 9 times outta 10, there will be some little details that don't quite fall in place right away, but oh well. Make sure you stay outta trouble with that thing, lol. The first drive is always special, and hard not to "enjoy" the fruits of your labor, lol, at least for me it is.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
one thing i really want to get done that i cant find info on is the gauges. I have been searching for pinouts and wire colors for the two stock connectors but no luck yet. The new gauges ive got have wires already on them that i can trace really easily, but the car side of the wiring is a mystery to me... anybody know where to look?

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
so i traced the printed circuits on my old gauges to figure out my pinouts. it took me a while but was ultimately effective. I will write up the pinouts tomorrow for anybody else to reference.
this is where im at right now
hoooked up the battery, turned it on, and found a few problems...
fuel guage is pegged to the right with or without power, oil pressure jumps to over 100 when power is on, and the E brake LED stays on when the e brake is off...
any help would be appreciated here

E brake light is prob from it being disconnected from the ebrake lever. There is 1 single wire that is a signal wire that goes to it see if its hooked up i forgot to put mine on too and my light was on. how is your tach? working properly? all lights working ok?

Steven, those gauges look way nice. Congrats on starting her up. I saw the video.
Could you snap some shots of the power steering lines coming from the reservoir and going to the pump and also your high pressure lines?
I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

i checked autometer's FAQ for some info. Im going to test out the fuel gauge today by grounding the signal pin which theoretically would mean 0 ohms and pop the needle over. If not then the gauge itself is bad.
not sure about oil pressure... i do have a new autometer sender so maybe ill have to install that- right now its on the stock lt1 sender. I also havent started the car with them yet to check out other stuff so ill get to that today as well.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
well the tach is working perfectly so that is good news...
Check engine light turns off when the car starts. brake light wont go out regardless of what i do with the wire off the E brake so that may be a wiring fault on my part.
i took the fuel level signal wire from the floor where i had traced it much earlier, and it is grounded...
im very confused but i got 0 ohms to ground and continuity to ground... but the gauge is beyond full so that implies the gauge is bad?
oh well.
my next item is to fix the rear brake line so that i am driveable. most of my engine wiring is loomed and routed, so were nearly there. a few odds and ends like the fuel gauge arent perfect, but i need it legal by Friday for prom!

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
today turned out pretty well-
i replaced a fitting and about a foot of brake line with a compression union and my brakes dont leak anymore. bled and filled, and replaced the master cylinder gasket.
after i got that out of the way i fired her up and pulled her out of the garage. Idled for a good 5-6 minutes, burned all the paint off the headers for good, and watched the temp gauge settle in at just under 200 degrees after the fans kicked on. My check engine light turns off when the car is running, and the E brake warning light is working now since the car drove, not sure why. Only problem is still the fuel gauge but im not worried for now, ill just get a full tank.
the car shifted nicely into first second and third, but reverse is a serious issue. It takes like ten tries to get the shifter to stay put when you start to release the clutch pedal. Most of the time is grinds and pops back into neutral...
possibly a reverse lockout problem? I havent wired anything to it yet, i assumed since it is disengaged with an open (0 volts) circuit that with no wiring it would be off all the time?
to do:
get it registered!
find a center console
button up the interior
get an exhaust built
get a front end alignment

The t-56 is known for that issue... Mine will go in and stay fine most of the time, somedays you have to hold it there with decent pressure otherwise it will not go into reverse..... And compression fittings are not safe on the road, thaey can blow out under heavy braking. Temporary fix? yes, permanent? No, i would never do it. Otherwise great job!

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
Congrats on getting your engine running. I just read this thread from start to finish and am impressed. Then I watched the video and your face lit up when your car started. I know my face will when I get my car started for the first time. Great job!! CAnt wait to see a video of you driving your car to your prom.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
thanks guys. i just hid the pcm up under the passenger side dash and zip tied a ton of wires out of sight. started replacing interior plastics up front and ran my last pcm wire (actually i have two more for the c207 but i dont think im putting it in honestly...).
for the center console i think i am going to put it in and then glue the parts that broke with epoxy since they will be bolted in place. and for the shifter plate... the auto one was already broken so i think i will take measurements and laser out a new acrylic one in school.
ill keep taking pics as i button her up.
~Steven
(as a note, the brake line will hopefully be repaired professionally soon, but not this week. the compression union held up fine to significant braking today, and hopefully will last a few weeks. thanks for the info)

Great job on the swap, it looks awsome.
i have a 6 speed center console out of a 02 trans am ws6 that i will not use since im converting back to automatic, I have it listed in the classifieds, also you will need a firebird radio console if you plan on swapping yours out with a newer style console, which i also have and could throw in for free if you are interested.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
thanks for offering, but ive already started my gorilla glue and c-clamp surgery lol
i am lasering out a plexiglass shifter plate tomorrow (hopefully) since i drew it up in autocad this morning. other than that my glue will be dry tomorrow and i can officially wrap up the interior
i swapped the oil pressure sending unit for the autometer one tonight and the gauge zeroed itself when i gave it power so now that gauge is functional. That means my only non-functioning gauge is fuel level which i need a full tank to diagnose properly.
heres a few pics. I also shoved my carpet behind the back seats back under the plastic pieces, albeit poorly, but with the seats folded back up it looks perfect...
the subwoofers are too much fun
sending unit
center console started... pcm hidden and all other panels replaced / wiring tucked
quick pic of the back seats and subs lookin clean

Looks great man, glad everything came together smoothly for you. You will be sure to enjoy this, and take care of it. She looks nice and clean, and it should last you years to come.

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
thanks TA. im really close- theres just so many little things that add up at the end.
interior is fully buttoned up. i lasered out a plexiglass shifter template that is clear, so it looks kinda weird, but it is better than nothing for the time being.
threw a chevy vinyl on the horn button and got a pic of everything installed
just need to get the wiper motor back in, fix the hood latch, and get the hood on.
oh and a bit more looming in the engine bay.....
got it insured for 260 dollars a year today, hopefully DMV for plates tomorrow.

i did get the wiper motor in just now though so i can get the hood back on (hopefully i can figure out how to fix the hood latch...)

the pic with the yellow box is the old gauge cluster, and it was mechanical speedo. that box is a three pin connector from the mechanical signal over to the tach.
today was great:
look who's legal...
all wrapped up
just need to drive her in for an alignment and something more than open headers!

Woo! Lookin good, brotha! You going to mount the front plate in the middle of the grill or somewhere else? I hate having to run a front plate here in VA. I just now finally got a setup that I'm decently happy with... I couldn't stand the RS grill and didn't want to cover the newly acquired Chev emblem

Re: first engine swap- LT1/T56
actually since i registered as an antique i dont have a front plate
got the front end alignment today so all thats missing is some pipes on the exhaust... lol
it'll do for now.
on the other hand my mom is straight up refusing to let me drive it to prom, so that kinda sucks. we'll see what happens.

Doesn't it mean K... Thanks... Bye?
What's the momma's beef with prom in that thing?? I remember my mom tried to refuse letting me get my motorcycle license when I was 17... after I had already held it for 9 months... completed the MSF course... and was all ready to go. That was not a good moment. Good luck
25 years is required for VA antique, right?
