Resto/Mod Questions

Resto/Mod Questions
I have a 1987 Camaro Iroc-Z. It is currently has a 305 TPI and 5SPD Trans. Everything is original on the Camaro down to the stock radio that still works. This is where my problem is. I want to give her a beefy power plant that is more reliable and has a lot more power. I have a T56 LT1 soon to be LT4 that is from a 1994 Trans am that I am considering swaping for my worn out 305 5spd. The problem is then my baby is no longer original. I plan on passing this car on to my kids and keeping it in the family so I am not really worried about the value of the car. I just want to make it look like it came from the factory with this motor and trans. Has anyone done this swap? What kind of problems did you come into? What parts can be used from the donor car? Will I need a new drive shaft for the new transmission? Will I need a different fuel system? Is there anyway to correct the stock gages to work with the new trans and motor? Can I reuse my powersteering and ac from the 305 or will I need a new system? Can I still use the Iroc intake on the LT4, or will I need a modified one? Any help or advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: Resto/Mod Questions
If you have the complete donar car, you have a great advantage on making the swap happen and work. Basiclly, it'll all transplant. You will need some help with the electronics side, making it a plug and play affair. There are several companies that offer harness modification products to that end. Check with the folks at Street and Performance http:\\www.hotrodlane.cc .
They offer wiring harnesses that will make it all plug and play.
Good luck

dink, welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
You don't need special wiring made. Many, many people have done LT1 swaps in 3rd gens, in fact there is an Engine Swap sub-forum that contains the topics. There is also a sticky in the top section of both the Engine Swap and sub-forum that detail the swap.
If resale value as an original factory equipped car isn't the issue, then all you need to do is pay attention to detail so that it looks like it was original factory when you get done. Again, many members have done that, so don't fret that part.
This is in the LTX/LSX Engine Swap sub-forum now.

Re: Resto/Mod Questions
The fuel system will work with a new TPI / walbro pump. You will need a ps hose from a 95 caprice IIRC. The stock gauges will work,I have only seen one swap done and kept the a/c but it can be done. And you can forget about putting that TPI intake on the LT1 wont work.
