ls1 burning oil?

have a 99 ls1 in my 92z28 and it's burning oil badly... the motor has been sitting since 2005. it has roughly 30,000 miles on it. anything i can use to try and remedy the situation besides just driving it and seeing what happens after so many miles?

went to the parts store, they recommended seafoam?

After research that doesn't seem very smart...

Re: ls1 burning oil?

I would try driving it for a while and see what happens. Are you running a catch can on the PCV? Maybe the valve stem seals are shot from sitting so long?

Re: ls1 burning oil?

Inline filter isnt going to do much good if you are using that much oil. Most likely, your PCV system is sucking it up. Its my biggest gripe with the LS1.

If you want to completely eliminate the PCV from sucking oil, delete it. Run a breather on the valve cover, cap off the rest of the system. If you dont want to do that, get a nice catch can. Not a home depot home made deal, but a nice can. RevExtreme makes a really nice one that gets high marks from everyone that has it. Even that isnt 100%. You'll have to clean it and it still might let some oil through. Pain in the....

Seafoam isnt a bad idea, though I dont think it will help with your problem. There is a seafoam thread over on tech, and most guys have pretty good luck with it. I ran it through my Jeep before, and was thinking about putting some into the car to try to clean things up.

Re: ls1 burning oil?

some ls1 engines up to 2001 had severe oil consumption problems, mainly when revved frequently(that's why you see oil consumption more in manual cars)

The cause is the low tension rings GM used to reduce friction. I had a 2000 corvette which had severe oil consumption also, Gm replaced the rings under warranty (there's a TSB for it)

If you want to try and do a top end clean, try the GM stuff it works really well but stinks and smokes to high heaven

Re: ls1 burning oil?

I have a 99 also. Never ran a PCV I've been on the breather since day one without any issues at all I recommend it. Hafway through the first season though I lost a valve seal on mine and talk about blow SMOKE whoooeeeee! Only at high RPM though. Replaced that and its been fine since.

Re: ls1 burning oil?

dont delete the PCV... upgrade it to the LS6 design.
http://ls1howto.com/index.php?article=18

i was burning a lot of oil on my low mileage LS1 ever since i've had it. i upgraded to the LS6 PCV and added a revextreme catch can, and havent burned a measurable amount since. the catch can is always empty... so it might be overkill, but i got it as extra insurance because the oil consumption issue was driving me mad.

when i was pulling off the stock LS1 PCV hoses, they had oil pooled up in them!!! its a very bad design.

Re: ls1 burning oil?

Simply turing the PCV to the normal verticle position has shown an improvement. Truck owners complained enough to GM than a fixed orifice PCV was released. Its essentially a solid plug with a .100" hole drilled in it

Using breathers is a bad idea because all the oil that would be sucked into your engine is now being sprayed all over the engine bay. A proper PCV system will limit consumption to a more managable level

Whoa six months late on your reply there LOL!

All I can say is this I ran that breather with no issues at all. I never had oil leaks or smell or any negative thing to say about it. I do however plan on running a PCV on my new build as there are new pigs in own around here known as the "Environmental Police" so Im making sure this build has everything emission related in place.

Also there are some benefits for the engine using a PCV so its a win win. I bought a catch can though
