LT-5 DIS using LS-1 coils
Guys,
The LT-5 DIS module is a pretty rare bird that costs upwards of 800 bucks if yours goes bad. Some of us ZR-1 guys are looking for alternatives to this, specifically adapting the LS-1 ignition. As I understand it, its possible to
run the LS coils fired by the existing DIS module. However to run the full LS-1 ignition requires a compatible reluctor. The LT-5 uses a 9 notch reluctor wheel which is part of the crank.
I'd like to take the first step and just sub the LS1 coils for the DIS coilpacks I have now. I am told that the LS1 coil packs are superior and give a better spark allowing more accurate timing particularly at WOT. That would benefit the LT-5 since peak power is in the 65-6800rpm range. Then there is the advantage of shorter plug wires and hotter spark.
I'm thinking that the Spark Latency Table would need to be adjusted.
For those of you that aren't acquainted with the LT-5, its an incredible motor. In many ways a precursor to the LS series. However, DOHC is really something. Smooth power all the way up the power band with a banshee yell at the top.

Well sound good an interesting. I'm not sure how much help you will get hear because That engine will not fit in our cars as far as I know, not enough room between the strut towers.

I appreciate the response but from I understand adapting the LT-5 DIS isn't much different than doing it on a GN. In fact what I am immediately interested in is simply using the LT-5 DIS to fire LS1 coils.

Re: LT-5 DIS using LS-1 coils
kinda out there on this one, but is the LT-5 ignition setup anything like an LT1 setup? theres a couple kits out there using lt1 crank sensors to fire ls1 coils for lt1 coil on plug setups.
food for thought

Re: LT-5 DIS using LS-1 coils
macdady,
The problem with the LT-5 is that it uses a 9slot reluctor wheel cast as part of and in the middle of crank. There is also a cam sensor but really not used for ignition timing. The are 4 coil packs under the plenum firing in waste spark mode. As a first step, I'd like to have a coil per cylinder fired by the existing ign module. Secondly, since that module is specific to the LT-5, it is becoming more difficult to source so many of us would like to have an alternative like the LS system.
